Pinwheels prompting awareness in Luzerne County

LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. One local organization continues to help kids in need and raise awareness.
Hundreds of pinwheels are being placed across Luzerne County to raise awareness for child abuse. It's something officials say is happening in our own backyards.
Planting pinwheels for prevention.
Ahead of national child abuse prevention month, the Luzerne County Child Advocacy Center is getting the word out about child abuse. It's an issue center leaders say continues to grow.
'In Luzerne County alone there were over 3,000 reports to ChildLine of abuse cases in Luzerne County and out of that we saw almost 500 of them. So each year the numbers are going up for the children who need our help,' explained Shannon Peduto, executive director, Luzerne County Child Advocacy Center.
The pinwheels planted at the Luzerne County Courthouse and Hazleton City Hall serve as a reminder of these children.
'We ask that when you're driving by the courthouse in Wilkes-Barre or City Hall in Hazleton, that you picture one child standing in the place of every pinwheel, and that's how many children in our county need help because of child abuse each year,' said Peduto.
Community organizations, leaders, and local law enforcement who work with the center joined the initiative.
'Events like this are so important in raising awareness within the community for everyone to be vigilant and to give child victims a voice in order to protect children and protect our community,' stated Tony Ross, first assistant district attorney, Luzerne County
The Luzerne County Child Advocacy Center is a standalone nonprofit, and they provide services for families free of charge. This means support from the community is crucial in helping them keep their doors open.

Westmoreland County man charged with trafficking after paying girl for sex

A Westmoreland County man is facing trafficking charges after police said he met a girl on Snapchat and gave her marijuana and $20 before having sex with her. According to the criminal complaint, the investigation began in November when police got a ChildLine tip saying a juvenile was "having sexual relations with older males" as well as sending them explicit photos and videos, sometimes for money. After looking at the victim's phone, police said their investigation led them to 30-year-old Sam Oglesby of Greensburg. The victim told police that she met with Oglesby and had sex with him in November, even though she told him that she was under 18. The victim told police that Oglesby drove her to a house in Greensburg, and before sex, he gave her marijuana, which she smoked. She said he also gave her $20. As part of the investigation, police said they took Oglesby's phone and found an explicit video that had been sent to the victim. An officer plugged Oglesby's phone in to charge it and stepped outside. When the officer came back, the criminal complaint says Oglesby's iPhone had been factory reset. A forensic analyst explained that any electronic device capable of connecting to the internet could be used to factory reset an iPhone. Oglesby is now facing a slew of charges, including trafficking in individuals, disseminating sexual material to a minor, corruption of minors, criminal use of a communication facility and tampering with physical evidence.

Lawrence County vocal coach accused of sending sexually explicit messages to teen student

A vocal coach from Lawrence County is facing multiple charges after police said he sent a 15-year-old sexually explicit messages almost daily. Court paperwork shows Justin Bryan was charged last week with unlawful contact with a minor and corruption of minors after a 15-year-old girl told police that her private vocal coach, 39-year-old Justin Bryan of New Wilmington, said inappropriate things to her on Snapchat and in person. State police in New Castle said their investigation into Bryan began after getting a ChildLine tip from the victim. The victim told police that she started taking private vocal lessons at Bryan's home in 2019. In the summer of 2022, the victim said Bryan began making sexually explicit comments to her. She told police that Bryan messaged her on Snapchat continuously and "she described it as getting weird as though they were in a relationship," police paperwork said. Police said the victim told investigators that she received detailed sexually explicit messages almost daily. Police said the victim also reported that Bryan made inappropriate and suggestive comments to her in person. The victim told police that, at Bryan's request, she sent him a nude photo of herself. She said she told Bryan that "she was being groomed and wanted out of it," the criminal complaint said. Police said the victim stopped voice lessons around July 2022 because of the unwanted sexual advances. Court paperwork shows Bryan is in the Lawrence County Jail, unable to post his $100,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Thursday.

Cranberry day care worker charged with assaulting 3-year-old boy during naptime

A Cranberry day care worker is charged with assaulting a 3-year-old boy during naptime. According to court paperwork, 26-year-old Joshua Branstetter was charged with endangering the welfare of children and simple assault after police said he injured a 3-year-old boy at Allie Alligator on Commerce Park Drive. Police said the investigation into Branstetter began after they got a ChildLine report at the end of May. Investigators said they learned that shortly before 1 p.m. on May 22, Branstetter, an assistant group supervisor at the day care, was sitting with a boy during naptime. Police said Brantstetter, who had his hand on the boy's back, forcefully pushed the boy back down onto his bed, causing him to hit his face off the bedframe. "The push was so forceful that Branstetter's leg lifted off the ground and he rocked himself forward," police wrote in the criminal complaint. "Additionally, the force caused the bed to move forward a few inches" when the victim's head "forcefully struck the frame of the bed," police wrote. The boy had injuries to his left eye, including swelling, and he needed medical evaluation, the criminal complaint says. KDKA-TV reached out to Allie Alligator for a statement about Branstetter and his current employment status but hasn't heard back.
