Trio of friends pocket $30m Powerball jackpot

Three friends from Perth have come forward as the lucky winners of the $30m Powerball jackpot, after splitting an $8 ticket.
The search was on for the winner of Thursday night's huge draw, after it was revealed a single ticket had claimed the entire division one prize.
The winning numbers were 34, 17, 35, 27, 30, 14, 32 and Powerball 17.
It was not until a Perth resident took their ticket into a newsagent at High Wycombe that they realised they - and the two friends with whom they shared a ticket - had scored the jackpot.
The trio of friends have been playing the lottery together for nine years, with the intention of splitting the winnings evenly.
That means each of the three friends will take home $10m each.
'I had a few tickets to check but when I got to this one the retailer quietly took me to one side,' the winning ticketholder said.
'There was a huge queue with everybody getting organised for Easter, and I wondered what on earth he was doing.'
The winner, who wished to remain anonymous, said they had not even realised there was a win in Perth and was 'completely baffled' to learn they held the winning ticket.
'He told me to go straight home, take a few deep breaths and enjoy the moment,' the winner said.
The lucky trio kept their winnings under wraps during the Easter break, describing the winning feeling as 'an out-of-body experience'.
The friends have already penned plans for how they will spend their millions.
'More family holidays is a must, it's all about making memories for the kids,' the winner said.
'We'd like to work towards a three-day work week and early retirement, but we want to stay active and we like our work.'
But for now, their first stop is a 'big steak dinner'.
'My son fancies a tomahawk - I'm sure we can organise that now,' the winner joked.

AFL trade news: Huge Harley Reid asking price, free agency latest

Some Victorian clubs are getting cold feet on bids this year for Harley Reid given the vast bounty they would have to give up and his likely astronomical wage. For Reid to move back this year and break his contract he would need to be paid at least $1.8 million a season on a long-term deal. While he has had his moments, he has also had his challenges with up-and-down form for the battling Eagles. Contracted until the end of 2026, those close to him have also given off the feeling that he is easing into Perth life. Richmond and Essendon both have a pair of top-10 picks while Geelong is seen as another suitor for Reid. Reid is rated below average by Champion Data for disposals, clearances and contested possessions but above average for his kicking. The brilliant second-year star had a disrupted pre-season and is certain to emerge as one of the stars of the game. But clubs committing as many as three first round picks would need to be certain he is a generational player to hand him upwards of $10 million in six year deals or longerr STARCEVICH, WORPEL WEIGH UP OFFERS Brisbane defender Brandon Starcevich is keen to remain at the Lions now that he has overcome his concussion battle as the list of restricted free agents shrinks to three. Starcevich, Hawthorn's James Worpel and West Coast's Oscar Allen are the only restricted agents on a day when Collingwood's unrestricted free agent Brayden Maynard locked in a four-year deal. Starcevich's contract talks have been on hold, but now that he is back this weekend in Lions colours he will again get those talks back on track. The WA local had requested a two-year offer from the Lions in a deal that would have given him the option of unrestricted free agency or a move to Tasmania in 2028. But he could end up asking for a longer deal or take up that offer to 2028 after going home in coming weeks to ensure he is keen to be locked in at the Lions. The fact he is a restricted free agent as one of the top nine paid players at Brisbane shows he has been well rewarded for his form. The Herald Sun reported last week that Carlton is certain unrestricted free agent Jack Silvagni will remain at the club as talks near. Silvagni is keen to stay at Carlton and will secure a pay rise after his spectacular year as a key position defender. But those talks will still have to resolve how many years the 27-year-old signs for and the scope of that pay rise. If rivals were clamouring for his services it would be easier to get a huge deal but he is likely to settle for a more modest rise to remain a third-generation Blue. Hawthorn's James Worpel is also considering whether to accept a similar two-year offer that would give him the chance to use Tasmania as leverage or even move south. The Hawks remain confident he will stay but to this stage have not blown him off the park with their offer. Essendon's unrestricted Sam Draper is a long way apart on financial terms with the Dons on a four-year deal but in an ideal world would like to stay if he can play in his preferred position as first ruck. Draper is unrestricted after the Dons completed 2024 deals for players including Jy Caldwell that put him out of the club's top nine players for 2025. SUNS FACE NERVOUS WAIT AS ROWELL WEIGHS UP FUTURE Gold Coast star Matt Rowell has gone away with mates across the mid-season bye before considering his future as the Suns nervously await a decision. AUC extends Datatine shoot at Katanning gold project Assays include grades up to 5.8g/t gold Project feasibility study due for release in late-June Special Report: Ausgold has extended the Datatine high-grade shoot by 240m down-plunge at its Katanning gold project (KGP) in WA. New results reinforce the potential of Datatine as a high-grade underground prospect and support a strong outlook for future resource growth at Katanning. The company is in the final stages of a feasibility study at the project, as it accelerates towards its goal of becoming Australia's next mid-tier gold producer. This final batch of assays from four reverse circulation-diamond and diamond drill holes have extended the Datatine shoot 240m down-plunge of the current Datatine resource. They returned a notable 6.6m at 3.40g/t gold from 362m, including 3.8m at 5.80g/t from 364.85m in BSRCD1805, the deepest hole in this program. Hole BSRCD1803 returned 2m at 3.67g/t from 297m along with 11.3m at 0.96g/t, including 4.2m at 1.81g/t from 333.83m. This hole, along with holes BSRCD1802 and BSDD049, returned intersections consistent with economic open pit grade intercepts. Pic: AUC Highlights underground mining potential Ausgold (ASX:AUC) will now utilise funding of up to $180,000 secured through Round 31 of the Geological Survey of Western Australia (GSWA) Exploration Incentive Scheme (EIS) to: Target sections where high-grade mineralisation is interpreted to have been missed; and Test for further high-grade mineralisation up to 150m beyond the current down-plunge extent. 'The latest assay results from Datatine continue to validate the potential for underground mining at Katanning,' AUC executive chairman John Dorward said. 'Results from BSRCD1805, which sit 240m down-plunge of the current resource, are particularly encouraging and support our strategy to pursue resource growth at depth. 'With both Datatine and the Central Zone remaining open down-plunge, we see clear opportunities to increase resources at the KGP and look forward to undertaking additional drilling at Datatine, supported by EIS co-funding, to follow-up this opportunity.' The company is on track to complete the project feasibility study considering the development of a large-scale, long-life open pit gold project at Katanning in late June.
