Stryjek denies former club as Killie edge Livingston

A deflected own goal from newcomer Mo Sylla separated the sides as Kilmarnock edged Livingston at Rugby Park in the Premier Sports Cup.
It was a tough one to take for The Lions who worked hard and were also denied by several fine saves from their former goalkeeper Max Stryjek.
The visitors enjoyed a large slice of the play but failed to capitalise. Overall, however, the newly-promoted side will now have some idea of what they face when the William Hill Premiership kicks-off in a few weeks time.
Earlier, Sam Culvert made his first start for Livingston and Samson Lawal and Teti Yengi returned to the bench.
The first real chance arrived after 11 minutes following a breakaway, Culvert crossing for Stevie May but he failed to convert.
Robbie Muirhead and May linked for Livingston and May had a one-to-one chance with Max Stryjek, but the former Livi player made a fine double save.
Killie hit back and Brad Lyons found Djenairo Daniels, but he was off-target with his shot before Livingston's Danny Wilson was booked for a challenge on Liam Polwarth before Killie broke the deadlock.
It was unfortunate that Sylla deflected the ball past Jerome Prior, but David Martindale's men did not let their heads go down and pressed forward in search of an equaliser.
Stryjek made a great stop to thwart Muirhead and the same player was denied again by the Polish-born, ex-Livi stopper to keep the home side ahead.
Former Lions skipper Jamie Brandon came on as a substitute for the home side and Kilmarnock replaced Lyons.
Minutes later, Martindale made a triple swap in a bid to get back into the game. Andy Winter took over from May, Graham Carey came on for Macaulay Tait and Moorhead made way for Yengi.
Culvert then threatened and played Winter in, but his cross was deflected for a corner. Dan Finlayson found Wilson but Stryjek was there again.
Kilmarnock made a double change as the clock ticked on towards full time and Martindale also made a move, sending on Zak Rudden to replace Lewis Smith.
Finlayson was then replaced by Shane Blayney and Carey found Wilson from a corner, but he sent his header wide and then Prior was called into action, saving from Marley Watkins.
Four minutes of injury time was indicated by the fourth official but there was no further scoring.

Man Utd warned Benjamin Sesko is 'similar' to Liverpool flop

Manchester United have been warned that £74m signing Benjamin Sesko is 'pretty similar' to Liverpool's 'biggest ever transfer mistake'. Sesko completed a £74m move to Old Trafford earlier in the month after rejecting interest from fellow Premier League club Newcastle United. The Slovenia international attracted interest from a number of elite clubs after two impressive seasons at RB Leipzig, where he scored 39 goals in 87 appearances. Sesko made his Premier League debut against Arsenal on Sunday, coming on as a second-half substitute in Manchester United's 1-0 defeat. The 22-year-old was signed to help solve United's goalscoring problems and replace Rasmus Hojlund, who has endured a dismal spell in Manchester since his £72m move from Atalanta. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. But ex-Germany midfielder Dietmar Hamann has warned the Red Devils that Sesko is 'pretty similar' to Liverpool flop Darwin Nunez. Nunez completed a big-money move to Anfield in 2022 but was sold earlier this summer following a largely disappointing spell on Merseyside. 'I'm not sure if Manchester United fans want to hear it, but I think Benjamin Sesko is a pretty similar player to Darwin Nunez,' Hamann told CasinoHawks. 'I think Sesko has got the body, he's got the height, he's got the pace. I think he's got a better touch than Nunez. 'He's technically a very gifted player, but he's a powerful young lad. Nunez is probably the one I would compare him with in recent years. 'I'd say his finishing is probably a bit better than Nunez, but he's got to prove it. He did it at times at Leipzig, but he's really in the spotlight now at Manchester United. 'Obviously, we've also seen that some big names went to Manchester United in the last 10 years as centre-forwards and they didn't succeed. It won't be an easy task, but I think he's capable of doing it.' The comparison with Nunez comes after Hamann said the ex-Liverpool forward could be the 'biggest transfer mistake' the club have ever made. Nunez signed a six-year contract at Anfield after completing a then club-record transfer worth £85m, but the 26-year-old was sold earlier this month to Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal. More Trending 'Is Darwin Nunez the biggest transfer mistake in Liverpool's history? Maybe, it's just part of the game,' Hamann told Betting Lounge. 'When you bring players in, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. 'People probably thought, myself included, if you bring somebody in for £85m, it guarantees you goals, but looking back it wasn't money well spent.' Sesko could make his first Premier League start for Manchester United on Sunday when the Red Devils travel to Craven Cottage to face Fulham. For more stories like this, check our sport page. Cristiano Ronaldo showed true colours with message to La Liga rival during furious row

Cristiano Ronaldo enjoyed huge success with Spanish giants Real Madrid but one furious incident has left a poor impression on one of his former La Liga opponents Former La Liga star Walter Pandiani has accused Cristiano Ronaldo of arrogance as he recounted a memorable flashpoint with the Portuguese superstar. Ronaldo enjoyed plenty of success with Spanish giants Real Madrid scoring a staggering 450 goals in 438 games. ‌ But there were a number of controversial flashpoints during his spell with Los Blancos - one of which has been recounted by ex-Osasuna forward Pandiani. The pair clashed during the 2010/11 season, almost coming to blows mid-match. ‌ And while Ronaldo was the main instigator - a jibe about his opponent's wage a particular sore point - Pandiani has also revealed that both Sergio Ramos and then manager Jose Mourinho also got involved. ‌ Speaking to Spanish newspaper AS, he said: 'The crowd there is very aggressive, and they were whistling and insulting him from the moment he came out to warm up. 'That p****d him off, and he was practicing free kicks, shooting at people. That's why he started the match so heated. 'During a game against Real Madrid, Cristiano pushed my teammate [Javier] Camunas, and I went to defend him. I pushed him, and he asked me who I was and how much I was paid. 'The brawl continued in the changing room tunnel with him and Sergio Ramos. I was very angry, and so were they. I didn't like his attitude at all. He was an arrogant guy. He was tremendous as a goalscorer, but his behaviour left a lot to be desired. 'Then [Jose] Mourinho came out and said I was looking for free publicity after playing in the First Division for eleven years. It was very unpleasant.' ‌ Real Madrid eventually lost 1-0 that day - a defeat that hugely damaged their title prospects. Los Blancos eventually finished four points adrift of rivals Barcelona come the end of the season. Ronaldo would eventually get his hands on the La Liga crown the following season but only won one further league title during his time at the Santiago Bernabeu. Ronaldo eventually quit the club in 2018 with a shock move to Juventus, while he then returned to Manchester United three seasons later. ‌ His second spell at Old Trafford was mixed as despite netting 24 times across his first campaign, he was axed by Erik ten Hag the following year. Ronaldo's contract was eventually cancelled following an explosive interview with Piers Morgan. He has been with Saudi side Al-Nassr ever since, reaching the 800 mark for club goals at the back end of last season.

Jurgen Klopp wrecked £19m Everton deal as ex-Liverpool target comes clean on summer move

Johan Bakayoko has revealed the impact Jurgen Klopp had on his decision to join RB Leipzig this summer, as the ex-Liverpool boss convinced the winger to snub Everton Jurgen Klopp continues to torment Everton even after leaving Liverpool, after he persuaded one of their transfer targets to join RB Leipzig instead. The ex-Reds manager, who spent nine seasons at Anfield, now serves as Red Bull's head of global football and works across the sporting network to identify and recruit players for their various teams. ‌ One such star secured by Klopp is Johan Bakayoko, who has moved to Leipzig from PSV Eindhoven in a transfer worth around £19million. The Belgian international attracted interest from several clubs last year following his impressive performances, making 47 appearances and scoring 12 goals. ‌ The 22-year-old also boasts an impressive trophy cabinet, having won two Eredivisie championships, two Dutch Cups and two Dutch Super Cups in just four seasons as a professional. This remarkable record caught the eye of numerous European sides, including Everton and Nottingham Forest - and even Liverpool earlier in 2024. ‌ READ MORE: Little-known Premier League law helps Chelsea as Everton left fuming at decision However, Bakayoko told the media this week that it was a discussion with former Liverpool boss Klopp that persuaded him to reject the Toffees for a switch to Germany. "The impression he left with me was that this was the right project for me," Bakayoko said. "He said they'd make me better and they needed me. "But the most funny part of it was we didn't even talk about him wanting me to come. It was really about football and what vision I have on football. "And that was how I was thinking, like, 'OK, so there's a person who's not even pushing me, but just wants to talk to me.' Like even if you go to some other clubs, then it's like, 'You have to do this to adapt better.'". "[But with Klopp] it was just a free talk where he wanted to see how I am as a person. So I was thinking, 'OK, if someone like this talks to you in these kind of ways, and he wants to build a project and he wants you to be part of it, but isn't pushing you to be part of it, then it gives you the freedom to express yourself.' And that's everything I need. That made me believe it was the right step." ‌ David Moyes will hardly be thrilled with Klopp's meddling, given that Bakayoko was among the three players the Toffees had targeted to boost their team for this season. Manchester City ace Jack Grealish became Everton's sixth summer signing following his season-long loan agreement. The Three Lions star hopefully won't be the last arrival at Hill Dickinson Stadium this summer in Moyes' eyes, with the Scottish manager eyeing additional reinforcements across the squad. ‌ With one target now heading off to Germany following encouragement from former rival Klopp, Everton supporters will be crossing their fingers that the Scotsman has some surprises in store. The Toffees suffered defeat in their opening Premier League game of the season on Monday, going down 1-0 against Leeds United following a controversial penalty awarded against James Tarkowski for handball. Moyes was left fuming by the referee's choice to give the spot-kick, which was calmly converted by Leeds debutant Lukas Nmecha. Following the match, the Everton manager said: "Look, Leeds were better than us on the night. But the goal is completely wrong. Really harsh. ‌ "It's difficult to lose on that. I've been in and spoke to the referee and they seem to think because you lean, your arm goes away. But you are allowed to lean in football. Tarky would have had to get his arm chopped off." With Everton welcoming Brighton this Sunday afternoon, Moyes will be hoping the club can finalise additional signings soon - especially in the forward areas, where he admitted his side struggled on Monday evening. On transfers, Moyes added: "The attacking players, we are desperate to get more quality. But let's be fair, it's something I think I've been saying for a while that I'm having to try and find ways of getting that better."
