"He played for respect and not to be liked" - Ex-Bull explains why MJ is different from today's NBA stars originally appeared on Basketball Network.
Former Chicago Bulls forward Dickey Simpkins acknowledged the notion that most NBA players of the current era are for show. For him, it's the complete opposite of what Michael Jordan was as a player back in the day.
Simpkins joined the Bulls in 1994 and won three NBA championships with the team. Throughout that stretch, he witnessed the true character of Jordan, the one that most fans didn't get to see.
According to Simpkins, MJ set a good example to his teammates as far as having the right mentality as a professional athlete. He concluded that Jordan never did anything for the amusement of the fans or to impress his teammates. In the process, Dickey said Michael earned the respect of everybody around him.
"He just delivered it," Simpkins said of Jordan on "The Rally" last year. "And you know, MJ, he played for respect and not to be liked. And I tell people all the time, you have to choose. Either you want to be respected or you want to be liked. If you want to be liked, that can go up and down. You want to be respected. That's going to go a long way."
Jordan's trait that always stood out
Jordan was still retired when Simpkins was drafted by the Bulls. In the middle of the season, MJ famously made an epic return.
Knowing what Mike had gone through that prompted his first retirement, Dickey was in awe of how MJ managed to bounce back stronger. As Simpkins described it, he never once saw Jordan come up with an excuse for not being able to deliver, even if he had a valid one, considering his father's tragic death.
With that in mind, Simpkins noted that MJ's mental strength as a player is what always stood out to him. He believes it's what separated His Airness from other star players from all the other eras.
"I think the biggest thing was the mental fortitude he had to embrace the moment to carry the team on his back and deliver a play that was going to be a iconic play or a masterpiece of winning a game or winning a series," Simpkins added of MJ. "Just that mentality to be able to do that."
"Everybody wants to have the last-second shot or wants to be the star, but everybody doesn't really want what comes with it outside of all the accolades," he continued. "… That's something that I've never seen any player have like MJ."MJ said he wouldn't survive the social media era
Simpkins was on point in agreeing that Jordan aimed to be respected and not liked during his playing years. In fact, MJ never liked anything he said or did to be misconstrued.
That being said, Michael admittedly couldn't imagine himself playing in the social media era. He believes it's a serious struggle to avoid misconceptions and false narratives these days.
"I don't know if I could've survived in this Twitter time," Jordan once said. "Where you don't have the privacy that you would want and what seems to be very innocent could be always misinterpreted."
In conclusion, Simpkins' remarks prove that apart from the otherworldly skills, Jordan was also unique because of how he conducted himself. This certainly added another layer to MJ's ever-growing legacy. This story was originally reported by Basketball Network on Aug 19, 2025, where it first appeared.

2026 college football national title odds: Texas enters season as favorite, but field appears wide open

Five of the six national champions from the 2018-23 seasons went undefeated, marking an era filled with dominant teams. Last year's debut of the 12-team College Football Playoff featured a two-loss Ohio State team as national champion, which could signal that being a dominant champion is now more difficult. Advertisement The volume and ease of transfers, NIL spending and a playoff format that is more forgiving of regular-season blemishes appear to have balanced the playing field just enough compared to the recent juggernauts of 2019 LSU and 2020 Alabama. That balance is playing out in the betting odds to win the national title this season. Texas is favored on BetMGM with +450 odds. The Longhorns are No. 1 in both major preseason polls, so their position at the top of the odds board lines up, but those odds do not display much confidence in Texas as the favorite. The +450 odds imply the Longhorns have roughly an 18 percent chance of winning the national title. That's the betting way of saying this appears to be a wide-open season. Seven teams have odds of +1000 (1o-to-1) or shorter. That means the gap between Texas at the top and Alabama in the seventh spot on the odds board is relatively small. Beyond the fact that 12 teams get into the Playoff, lowering the bar to get into the postseason and giving more teams (like Ohio State last year) a chance to win it all, a lot of top programs enter this season with major question marks, especially at quarterback. Texas is getting some love for having Arch Manning, but his recruiting profile and famous last name are still carrying a lot of weight for a quarterback with only 95 pass attempts at the college level, and barely half of those came against power conference opponents. Manning is also the preseason favorite to win the Heisman Trophy, but that doesn't mean there isn't some level of uncertainty about how he will perform. Other premier programs like Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia and Notre Dame are also going with first-year starters at quarterback. Despite that, those teams are all in the top eight of the preseason AP Top 25. Inexperience at quarterback isn't necessarily a detriment to winning a national title. In recent years, Mac Jones (2020 Alabama), Trevor Lawrence (2018 Clemson), Jake Coker (2015 Alabama), J.T. Barrett/Cardale Jones (2014 Ohio State), Jameis Winston (2013 Florida State), A.J. McCarron (2011 Alabama) and Cam Newton (2010 Auburn) were first-year Division I starters to win national titles (and you can include Tua Tagovailoa on that list, even though he didn't start most of the season). Teams can win it all with a first-year starter, but having a lot of top programs with new faces at quarterback does make the season harder to project. That's why the betting odds are relatively balanced among the top contenders. Advertisement Defending champion Ohio State just named Julian Sayin, a redshirt freshman and a five-star recruit out of high school, its starter for the season opener against Texas. Headline writers who like puns will be thrilled to be able to play around with QBs named Arch and Sayin, but that game should have an early impact on national title odds with the Buckeyes just below Texas at +525. Georgia and Penn State follow OSU at +700. The Nittany Lions made the semifinals last year and return quarterback Drew Allar, while Georgia will break in Gunner Stockton. Next up are Oregon and Clemson at +900. Clemson is more in the Penn State category with Cade Klubnik back at quarterback. Oregon has UCLA transfer Dante Moore stepping in after he backed up Dillon Gabriel last season. Alabama also has a relative unknown at quarterback in Ty Simpson, who was named the starter a week ago. Simpson will be tasked with getting Alabama back into national title contention after the Crimson Tide missed the 12-team playoff last season. Last year's championship game loser Notre Dame is +1200. The Fighting Irish haven't even named a starting QB yet, but remain in the top 10 of both the preseason polls and in the betting odds. The Irish are a bit lower in the betting odds than the polls. ND is fifth in the Coaches' Poll and sixth in the AP Top 25, but only eighth on BetMGM's odds board to win the national title. LSU is the last team before a solid dropoff in the odds. The Tigers are +1400 with returning quarterback Garrett Nussmeier guiding the optimism around Brian Kelly's team. Betting/odds links in this article are provided by partners of The Athletic. Patriots' Kyle Dugger, Anfernee Jennings reportedly available via trade

With Kyle Dugger lining up with second-teamers and Anfernee Jennings playing in the second half of Saturday's preseason game, the writing has been on the wall that both may not be members of the New England Patriots for long. We're now getting some confirmation the team is looking to move both defensive veterans. The Patriots have brought up both players in trade talks this summer, according to a report by Andrew Callahan of The Boston Herald on Tuesday. Dugger, whom the team discussed in talks more recently, has emerged as the likeliest of the two to move ahead of the regular season. The veteran safety signed a four-year, $58 million contract (which included $32.5 million in guaranteed money) with the Patriots last April, but that was under the Jerod Mayo coaching staff. He's fallen on the team's depth chart this summer and was playing with the scout-team defense during Monday's practice. Dugger has played the second half in both of New England's preseason games, and was on the field through the final play in Saturday's win over the Minnesota Vikings. He intercepted the final throw of the game in the end zone to preserve the New England victory, but also tried to do too much on the play and nearly fumbled away the win. Dugger was lucky officials ruled him down before his fumble, which let the Pats hold on for the 20-12 win. If the Patriots don't see Dugger as a fit in Mike Vrabel and Terrell Williams' defense, the team would be much better off trading him than outright releasing him. The Patriots would be hit with $14.25 million in dead money toward the cap if Dugger is released, compared to the $4.5 million hit (and over $10 million savings off the salary cap) that would come if he's traded. Jennings also played into the second half Saturday, but the edge rusher may have saved his bacon with three sacks on the afternoon. There are still questions about his fit in Vrabel and Williams' defense, though Callahan reported the team's exploratory talks about a Jennings trade happened earlier this summer. Patriots VP of player personnel Eliot Wolf said earlier this week he's had talks with the 31 other teams about potential trades, though many assumed it was to add to the roster via a blockbuster swing. It sounds like some of those calls were gauging interest in Dugger ahead of the season. Second-year receiver Ja'Lynn Polk is another player on a short leash in New England this summer. He hasn't done much to earn his spot, but at least one other team is getting ready to pounce if the Patriots cut ties with Polk. According to Andrew Fillipponi of 93.7 The Fan, the Pittsburgh Steelers have "done some homework" on Polk, since he'll likely be cut by New England. Fillipponi threw out the possibility of Pittsburgh sending a seventh-round pick to the Patriots in return for Polk before he potentially hits waivers. The Patriots drafted Polk in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft, but he caught just 12 of the 33 passes that went his way during his rookie season. He was battling for a roster spot this summer, but suffered an injury in New England's preseason opener against the Washington Commanders.
