Should You Buy IonQ Stock for Just $45?

Globe and Mail2 days ago

So far this year, many of the hottest stocks fueling the artificial intelligence (AI) revolution have taken a breather. As of the closing bell on May 23, shares of Nvidia, Amazon, Alphabet, Apple, and Tesla have negative returns on the year.
With megacap technology stocks showing some signs of fatigue, where else could growth investors be looking? As far as I can tell, those focused on AI have been looking beyond the "Magnificent Seven" and are redeploying capital into emerging opportunities in this sector. One such area that is fetching quite a bit of attention right now is quantum computing.
Where to invest $1,000 right now? Our analyst team just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks to buy right now. Learn More »
When it comes to quantum computing stocks, IonQ (NYSE: IONQ) might just be the hottest ticket in town. Shares are up just 9% on the year and currently trade for $45. Is now a lucrative opportunity to buy IonQ stock? Let's find out.
Analyzing IonQ's valuation
The graph below shows some interesting trends in IonQ's valuation over the last year. For most of 2024, its market capitalization hovered around $1 billion. But following October, there was noticeable valuation expansion in the stock. And while shares exhibited some form of a sell-off earlier this year, they have since rebounded. As of May 23, the company's market cap was sitting at $11.3 billion -- close to all-time highs.

It's important to understand that a company's share price doesn't tell you too much about the underlying value of the business. While the chart above tells investors that IonQ is valued at $11.3 billion, what does that actually mean?
For smaller companies that are not yet profitable, a good way to benchmark valuation is by looking at the ratio between market cap and sales. This is called the price-to-sales (P/S) multiple. As of this writing, IonQ's P/S is 231.
To put this into perspective, the P/S ratios for Amazon and Cisco during the dot-com bubble peaked in the range between 30 and 40. Moreover, Nvidia's P/S ratio hit a high of around 45 during more bullish periods of the AI bull run.
Why is IonQ's stock going parabolic?
Generally speaking, when a stock suddenly rises by this order of magnitude, there is some sort of catalyst behind the movement. In IonQ's case, this doesn't really hold up. During the final months of 2024, many of its peers including Rigetti Computing, D-Wave Quantum, and Quantum Computing each experienced similar pronounced rises in share price.
Beyond macro tailwinds across smaller quantum computing stocks, another reason shares of IonQ could be rising sharply right now is due to something known as short covering. Shorting a stock is a financial term that means you are betting on the share price to decline.
From time to time, short-sellers need to buy shares of a stock they are shorting in order to close out their positions. This is known as a short squeeze, and often leads to higher-than-usual increases in a stock price for a brief period.
Per the chart below, IonQ's short interest has been steadily climbing throughout the year. For reference, a short interest of more than 10% is generally considered higher risk. The company's short interest is almost double that benchmark. In my eyes, this price action parallels that of a meme stock and not a prudent investment opportunity.

What I think could happen sooner than later
At the end of the first quarter (ended March 31), IonQ held $588 million of cash and short-term investments on its balance sheet. Considering that the company's quarterly burn rate is currently around $30 million, investors might think the business has ample liquidity.
IONQ Cash and Short-Term Investments (Quarterly) data by YCharts.
I don't necessarily see it that way, though. For starters, quantum computing is far from a commercialized technology. For this reason alone, IonQ's revenue growth is likely going to be both unpredictable and fairly mundane over the next several years, at least.
Furthermore, the capital expenditure (capex) and research and development (R&D) costs needed to develop quantum computing is immense. Nvidia, Amazon, Alphabet, and Microsoft are also aggressively investing in this space, so I think IonQ is going to have a hard time keeping up with the competition given its limited financial resources relative to big tech.
Now that the stock is trading back near its highs, I suspect the company may issue shares at its current overextended valuation in an effort to raise capital. If management does do this and you buy the stock at current prices, then you will be diluted.
While IonQ stock may appear cheap at $45, the company is actually being valued in the tens of billions -- despite ongoing cash burn, little revenue, high short interest, and an intensifying competitive landscape.
I would not buy IonQ at its current price, and I suspect shares could be looking at a precipitous sell-off sooner than later.

Paramount Stock (NASDAQ:PARA) Notches Up as Trump Passes on First Settlement Offer

Well, things are getting tight at entertainment giant Paramount (PARA) as a new report from the Wall Street Journal revealed that Paramount made its opening offer to get President Trump to walk away from the lawsuit. The offer was for $15 million, and Trump has turned it down. The move had an unexpectedly positive effect on shareholders, though, who sent shares up fractionally in the closing minutes of Thursday's trading. Confident Investing Starts Here: The reports note that the offer is not exactly far off; Trump's team is apparently willing to settle for $25 million and an apology from CBS News, which given what we have heard out of CBS News and those watching so far, might be the toughest part to get. In fact, reports note that the Trump team is already looking to fire up a completely separate second lawsuit around 'bias of its news coverage.' The Trump team has until this Wednesday to respond. A mediation session was expected to carry on today, so we may well find out tomorrow if there is any further advancement of the suit. Moreover, Shari Redstone has already recused herself from negotiations with the Trump team, as concerns about a settlement being considered a bribe by insurance companies remains. Some legal analysts, however, are quite convinced that that cannot be the case. A Closer Look from the Trump Team Then, in perhaps the biggest surprise of all, word came out around the Trump team's response to the lawsuits, noting that the 60 Minutes interview with Kamala Harris caused the president 'mental anguish.' It also, apparently, caused that same mental anguish to a range of other consumers as well. Trump lawyers also asserted that '…the First Amendment is no shield to news distortion,' which attempts to address one of Paramount lawyers' primary defense vectors. Further, Paramount already attempted to protect against charges of news distortion by releasing an 'unedited transcript' of the Harris interview which, lawyers argued, proved the newscast '…was not doctored or deceitful.' Is Paramount Stock a Good Buy Right Now? Turning to Wall Street, analysts have a Hold consensus rating on PARA stock based on two Buys, seven Holds and four Sells assigned in the past three months, as indicated by the graphic below. After a 2.28% loss in its share price over the past year, the average PARA price target of $12.20 per share implies 0.33% upside potential. See more PARA analyst ratings Disclosure

Uber Stock Is Still a ‘Top Pick,' Says BMO Capital Despite Tesla (TSLA) Robotaxi Jitters

Shares of ride-hailing and delivery giant Uber (UBER) fell roughly 5% in yesterday's trading. The decline follows news of Tesla's (TSLA) upcoming Robotaxi launch in Austin on June 12. Still, BMO Capital Top analyst Brian Pitz remains confident in Uber's long-term strategy and growth prospects. The five-star analyst sees the recent dip as a buying opportunity and reiterated his Outperform rating and $101 price target, calling Uber a 'Top Pick' in the sector. Confident Investing Starts Here: Uber's AV Plans and Valuation Signal Upside According to the analyst, the market has overreacted to Tesla's planned Robotaxi launch on June 12. Although the news drew headlines, Pitz notes that Tesla's rollout—limited to just 10–20 vehicles—is small when stacked against Uber's much larger plans. For instance, Uber's deal with Waymo, owned by Alphabet (GOOGL), will bring hundreds of autonomous cars to its app in the coming months. Uber also has active deals with May Mobility and China-based WeRide, which are set to roll out AVs (autonomous vehicle) in dozens of U.S. cities. BMO applauds Uber's move to ' drive international scale ' through its recent acquisition of Dantaxi, Denmark's largest taxi firm. The deal brings 3,500 drivers onto Uber's platform, and starting this summer, riders in Denmark will be able to book trips through the app. The firm expects this to 'increase adoption' by improving match rates and estimated time of arrivals (ETAs), while opening up more ways to use it at airports, during leisure activities, and for daily commutes. On the self-driving front, Pitz sees Uber as an AV winner. The company now works with more than 15 AV partners and plans to launch shared AV rides by 2026. These steps are already boosting usage in cities like Austin, where Uber sees steady demand. Importantly, BMO finds Uber's valuation compelling. With shares trading at 19x next-twelve-month (NTM) EBITDA, the stock is below its two-year forward average of 21x and significantly under the high end of 27x. That suggests meaningful upside potential if Uber continues to execute across global and autonomous growth areas. What Is the Prediction for UBER Stock? Overall, Wall Street is bullish on Uber Technologies' prospects, with a Strong Buy consensus rating based on 29 Buys and four Holds. The average UBER stock price target of $98.61 implies about 16.98% upside potential. See more UBER analyst ratings Disclaimer & Disclosure Report an Issue
