TSA was checking for Real IDs on Wednesday as travelers moved through the security checkpoint at Philadelphia International Airport.
"I do a lot of traveling," said Mark Reahk.
Reahk said he made sure to get his Real ID as soon as possible.
"Just to avoid the hassle. We started seeing the signs a couple of years ago about the Real ID. I wanted to make sure I got it, just to avoid it," he said.
Brett Hampton said he got his in the nick of time, a day before his flight. He said the DMVs were packed.
"Sat in line for an hour and a half. Got my Real ID, then they told me, 'You got this paper that you have to get.' They said it would take six weeks to get, so I just have my passport with me," said Hampton.
"It's just an added layer of security," Gerardo Spero, TSA federal security director for Pennsylvania and Delaware, said.
Spero said travelers can still fly without a Real ID. But those without it will have to go through some additional screening.
If you don't have a Real ID, you can also use a passport, a Global Entry Card or a Permanent Resident Card.
"I'm actually very proud of our travelers. They heard the message and they came prepared," Spero said.
Shanique Mitchell and her sister don't have Real IDs and were worried they weren't going to be able to fly to Florida for a family member's graduation. The two are now breathing a sigh of relief that, for now, they can fly without it.
"I'm just so happy," she said.
So far, there's been no major delays at PHL because of the Real IDs, but airport officials are encouraging travelers to arrive early just in case there are.

Oregon wildfire closes nearly 20 miles of interstate in Columbia River Gorge

THE DALLES, Ore. (AP) — A wildfire in Oregon prompted officials to close nearly 20 miles (32 kilometers) of an interstate in the Columbia River Gorge on Wednesday as smoke obscured visibility and fire crews responded to the blaze. The Oregon Department of Transportation said Interstate 84 was closed between Hood River and The Dalles. Hood River, a popular tourist destination about 55 miles (89 kilometers) east of Portland, is home to some 8,000 people, and more than 15,000 people live in The Dalles further east. Photos shared by the department showed flames burning alongside and in the median of the highway as wind gusts fanned smoke. A water-dropping helicopter and a plane dropping fire retardant helped fight the fire from above. The fire broke out on Wednesday. Department spokesperson David House said in an email that the interstate will be closed indefinitely, 'due not only to the wildfires but also due to the extreme danger of driving in smoke.' Evacuations were ordered northwest of The Dalles, including along I-84 and areas further inland, according to the Wasco County Sheriff's Office. Two temporary shelters, including one at a middle school, are set to be opened in The Dalles, the sheriff's office said. Washington state's transportation department said a separate brush fire has closed 8 miles (13 kilometers) of State Route 14, which also runs along the Columbia River. Authorities urged people traveling in the area to use alternate routes.

Derry Township fire chief worried about how road closure will impact response time

Route 217 in Derry Township is a major throughway between Derry Borough and Blairsville, but part of that road that sits over a small creek has been completely closed by PennDOT for a bridge rehabilitation. And while work on the bridge was needed, Derry Township Fire Chief Mark Piantine says that a full closure of the road and the detour to get around it could tack on an extra 15 minutes for emergency crews responding to a call. Chief Piantine says he wasn't consulted by PennDOT about the major road closure in his township. He says he didn't even know it was happening until signs went up warning drivers of the closure back in late May. "We are the last ones to know, but we're the first ones to go if something happens," Chief Piantine said. The closure on Route 217 is centered around a small bridge that is being rehabilitated between Ankney Road and Hillside Road. And though that closure only extends about a half a mile, Chief Piantine says the detours to get around the small stretch take miles on narrow county roads that traverse active train crossings. It's not something you want when trying to respond to an emergency quickly. The good news for Derry Township residents is that volunteer fire companies in Blairsville and Black Lick are aware of the closure and ready to respond to that part of Derry to give Chief Piantine's crews time to arrive. Plus, nearby companies from Unity Township are also in the know on this and are able to back up Derry should the need arise. Still, Piantine says he wishes he would have been consulted initially. PennDOT said in a statement: "During the design of the Project, local stakeholders were informed of the plans and detour information in August of 2024, and at that time no concerns were received." They also said that "Performing this work under detour provides for a higher quality product that can be performed safer and in a shorter timeframe." The work on 217 is slated to be completed, weather pending, by Independence Day weekend. PennDOT shared these detours: Route 217 (Millwood Street, Blairsville Road, Walnut Street) Route 22/119 (Pittsburgh-Blairsville -Buffalo Highway) Route 982 (New Derry Road) Route 1041 (Chestnut Street) Route 217 (Fourth Street, Millwood Street)

Your Costco ID is not valid for TSA entry

HONOLULU (KHON2) — If you've been thinking your Costco membership card is good enough for airport security, think again. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) recently made it clear that Costco cards will not be accepted as valid identification when you're flying. In a post on their official Facebook page, TSA shared: Hawaiʻi residents: Get your REAL ID before May 7 'We love hotdogs & rotisserie chickens as much as the next person, but please stop telling people their Costco card counts as a REAL ID because it absolutely does not.' This statement comes after a lot of confusion from travelers, some of whom thought their Costco card, which has a gold star on it, would count as a REAL ID. Some of those who engaged with the TSA post even joked online, saying things like 'at least it has a STAR on it' or 'So, you're saying we should bring you a chicken?' But the truth is, a REAL ID is a special kind of ID that meets strict government standards. The REAL ID Act was passed in 2005, and it has taken nearly 20 years for all states to issue these you want to fly domestically, you'll need either a REAL ID-compliant driver's license, a state-issued ID or another acceptable form of ID like a passport. You can get a REAL ID by visiting your state's driver's license office and providing documents like your full name, birth date, Social Security number, proof of address and legal status. You can click to learn more about state issued identification cards and for information on obtaining a Hawaii State driver's license.
