Defending champion Panthers keep winning even without Tkachuk, Ekblad and before Marchand debuts

Al Arabiya25-03-2025

Matthew Tkachuk has not been on the ice for the Florida Panthers since early February. Aaron Ekblad is not eligible to play again until Game 3 of the first round of the postseason, and Brad Marchand still hasn't debuted with his new team since joining at the trade deadline. Those are big holes down the stretch, and yet they keep on rolling.
The Panthers won nine of their first 14 games since the NHL season resumed after the 4 Nations Face-Off break and remain atop the Atlantic Division with 11 left to play. Seth Jones has fit in perfectly since they acquired him from Chicago, and the defending Stanley Cup champions look primed for another playoff run. 'That's the way it goes,' said Sam Bennett, whose 12 points over this span are tied with captain Aleksander Barkov for second-most on the roster behind Sam Reinhart (13). 'You're going to be down important guys at important times of the year. In the playoffs, especially, there's going to be times that you lose guys, and it's up to us to step up, and every guy's got to play a little harder, play a little bigger when we have those really important guys out of our lineup.'
Tkachuk, Florida's heart-and-soul top forward, was injured playing for the US at the 4 Nations on Feb. 15. Ekblad, the top-four defenseman in his 11th season in the league, was suspended 20 games on March 10 for performance-enhancing drugs. And the team knew Marchand would not be available right away after getting hurt March 1 in what turned out to be his final game with the Boston Bruins. Coach Paul Maurice said the 36-year-old was skating hard and could be back as soon as the end of this week, if not early April. Even without those guys, the Panthers have allowed opponents to score just two goals a game during this stretch–tied for the fewest in the NHL. 'What separates them and why I think they're the best defending team in the league is they protect the net front and the slot better than anybody in the NHL, for my money,' Washington Capitals coach Spencer Carbery said before his team beat Florida on Saturday. 'And that's partly the way that their structure is, so the system, but also the commitment to win your 1-on-1 (matchups) and protect that area is elite, elite, elite.'
Maurice thinks the Panthers have handled the situation really well, absent a clunker of a 3–1 defeat at Montreal. After losing to Washington, the affable coach, who has been behind the bench for over 2,000 NHL games, deadpanned that, despite a sub-.500 road trip, 'We won't fold the season.' Overall, he has been pleased. 'We've been pretty good,' Maurice said. 'We've played playoff games without Bennett, without Barkov–without a number of players. … We just have some experience with it.'
Since hiring Maurice and trading for Tkachuk in the summer of 2023, Florida has won seven of eight playoff series while making back-to-back trips to the final and captured the first championship in franchise history. The hope is to do more of that after getting Marchand and Jones, who has been playing big minutes–over 25 a game–in Ekblad's absence. 'He's been great,' forward Jonah Gadjovich said of Jones. 'He's been great on the ice and off the ice. He's a great guy, obviously a great player as well, so we're so happy to have him and his leadership around the locker room.'
Inside the locker room, Gadjovich said being without top players is no excuse, so he and his teammates are not treating it as such. 'Obviously we're down a lot of guys right now, and I think we're looking forward to having them back whenever they come back,' he said. 'Whoever's in the lineup just has to do their job. We all know how to play. We all know Panther hockey and what's expected of us.'

Messi's brilliance continues with two goals, two assists in Inter Miami's 5-1 win over Columbus Crew

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida: Inter Miami was in a midseason slump just a week ago. Lionel Messi made sure it didn't last long. For the latest updates, follow us @ArabNewsSport Messi scored for the fifth time in three Major League Soccer matches to help Inter Miami rout the Columbus Crew 5-1 on Saturday night for its second straight win. Messi played a role each of Miami's goals. He scored twice – in the 15th and 24th minutes – giving him 10 goals this season, which leads his team and is tied for third in MLS. He set up Tadeo Allende's goal in the 13th, Fafa Picault's in the 89th and was also involved in Luis Suarez's score in the 64th. That makes it two straight matches that the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner has recorded at least two goals and an assist. His 16 goal contributions are the most in the league. 'I see him every game. We see the same thing,' Miami coach Javier Mascherano said through an interpreter. 'We try to help him as much as we can. … Clearly he is the best player that has ever played this game. And we have to understand that when he is not brilliant, that's because one of us is failing. That's the reality.' Miami was the more aggressive team early. The Herons had seven shots – four on goal – in the first 25 minutes against a Columbus team that does not give up many. The Crew entered Saturday ranked eighth in MLS with just 19 goals allowed. Allende opened the scoring with a cross-body finish set up by Messi's long ball over the top. A few minutes later, Messi took advantage of a poor decision by goalkeeper Nicholas Hagen and lofted the ball over despite the keeper getting a hand on it. On Messi's second goal, Sergio Busquets set up his former Barcelona teammate for the second straight game, sending a long pass to a streaking Messi for an easy finish over Hagen. It was an important win for Miami, which entered Saturday with just two wins in its past eight matches and was sixth in the Eastern Conference. Miami beat Montreal 4-2 on Wednesday, and Saturday's win over Columbus put last year's Supporters' Shield winner in a tie for third place with 29 points in their final match before the start of next month's Club World Cup. 'Winning this way gives us confidence,' Mascherano said. 'It shows that we're brave and calm and can play against anybody, especially in the MLS. The tournament is another story. The rivals are are different level.' Miami will face Al Ahly of Egypt on June 14 at Hard Rock Stadium, the home stadium of the NFL's Miami Dolphins. Before that, Messi will join the Argentina national team for World Cup qualifiers against Chile on June 5 and Colombia on June 10. Saturday was the second match of the season between Columbus and Miami, winners of the last two League's Cup tournaments. Inter Miami also beat Columbus to win the Supporters' Shield in 2024. They were the only remaining undefeated teams in MLS when they met in front of a record crowd of 60,614 fans to Huntington Bank Field on April 19. It was a single-game record for a Crew home match and the largest non-NFL event in stadium history. Miami won 1-0. Columbus made it 3-1 when Dylan Chambost's corner was headed home by Cesar Ruvalcaba against goalkeeper Rocco Ríos Novo, who replaced Oscar Ustari in the second half. Mascherano said Ustari was experiencing discomfort in his leg and the team didn't want to risk an injury. Suarez restored Miami's three-goal lead with his second goal in as many matches. And Messi fed a through ball to Picault in the closing minutes, stamping one of Miami's most dominant wins of the MLS season. Miami played without veteran left back Jordi Alba, who suffered a lower-body injury against Montreal on Wednesday.

Yan Liu has an albatross and a late birdie to hang onto the lead in the Chevron Championship

THE WOODLANDS, Texas: Yan Liu had an albatross to offset three front-nine bogeys and rebounded from a late bogey for an even-par 72 and a one-stroke lead over four players Friday in the Chevron Championship, the first women's major tournament of the year. Top-ranked Nelly Korda rallied late in the afternoon to make the cut in her title defense, following an opening 77 with a 68. She won last year at The Club at Carlton Woods for the last of her record-tying five straight victories. She used a different putter Friday. 'I putted for an hour and a half after the round yesterday, so just needed something different,' Korda said. 'Sometimes that's all you need.' Fog delayed the start of play, with nine players unable to finish the round because of darkness. Liu, the 27-year-old Chinese player who shared the first-round lead with Haeran Ryu after a 65, admitted she would feel some pressure Saturday. 'I think, definitely, I will feel a little bit, because, well, this is major,' Liu said. 'I know the course is going to be harder, harder, so I think I just stay patient, calm because I'm very emotional person.' Hyo Joo Kim (71) was a stroke back with Lindy Duncan (66), Sarah Schmelzel (68) and Mao Saigo (68). Kim won the Ford Championship a month ago in Arizona for her seventh LPGA Tour title, while the other four players at the top of the leaderboard are winless. Liu holed her 175-yard second shot on the 505-yard, downwind par-5 eighth with a 7-iron for the albatross. 'I saw the ball how to go in, so that's really cool thing,' Liu said. 'But I think they don't have video for that hole. Little sad.' Liu then bogeyed No. 9 and opened the back nine with seven pars. She dropped into a six-way tied for the lead with a bogey on the par-3 17th. Her tee shot hopped left into fluffy Bermuda rough, she chunked her second to the fringe and missed a 15-foot par try. She got the stroke back with a 15-foot birdie putt on the par-5 18th, finishing about an hour before sunset. 'Last hole, is my first birdie today,' Liu said. 'I'm glad I made it. Ryu had a 74 to fall two strokes back in a group with Angel Yin (70) , Manon De Roey (71) and Hye-Jin Choi (71). Weiwei Zhang also was 5 under with three holes left when play was suspended. Lexi Thompson was 4 under, following an opening 73 with a 67. The 30-year-old Florida player retired from full-time play at the end of last season. 'I'm still practicing and training,' Thompson said. 'I love working out. I'm still striving to be better for when I do tee it up because every time I tee it up I still want to win. It's not like I'm just going out here to show face. I'm still very competitive, but just trying to enjoy the few times I will play.' She won the 2014 event — then the Kraft Nabisco Championship — at Mission Hills in Rancho Mirage, California.
