Sibling bonds fuel Team Nova Scotia at 2025 Canada Games

Yahoo10 hours ago
When the Nova Scotia women's soccer team and men's lacrosse squad begin play at the 2025 Canada Summer Games, both will feature a family connection.
At least two of the province's teams participating in the multi-sport national competition this month in St. John's have siblings on their rosters.
The Buchanan twins and the Mont brothers are among the athletes representing Nova Scotia, with Jada and Kylie Buchanan teaming up on the soccer field and Leo, Emmett and Henry Mont joining forces in the lacrosse arena.
Bridgewater's Buchanan sisters have shared a lot in their 17 years, including a passion for soccer.
However, they haven't always played together. One year, Jada suited up for Halifax County United Soccer Club, while Kylie stayed with her local team, South Shore United FC.
Being pitted against each other fed their competitiveness and their love of the sport, they say.
Now, they're back on the same team — Kylie as a midfielder, Jada as a defender — and planning to use their familiarity to their advantage.
"I feel like we're able to read each other's minds, kind of," said Jada.
"I kind of know where she's going to play the ball without even having to talk to her. And I know where she plays the ball, where she moves, because we played with each other for so long."
The twins said they're excited to represent Nova Scotia and are looking forward to Aug. 19, when they play their first game against Team Yukon.
Meanwhile, the Mont household in Bedford has three competitive lacrosse players: older brother Leo, 17, and twins Emmett and Henry, 15.
While they can routinely find time to practise in their yard, they haven't always been able to play together competitively given the age difference between Leo and his younger brothers.
But when they realized they had a rare chance to qualify together for the Nova Scotia team, they vowed to try as hard as they could to make it happen.
The path to earning a berth on the team was very competitive and Emmett faced an additional challenge coming off a serious knee injury.
But it was all worth it in the end.
"Originally, we got one email congratulating someone on the team," said Leo.
"And then we got a second email later, kind of confirming that it was all three of us and not just one or two. So it was a real special moment and kind of settled the nerves of the whole process."
The lacrosse team will open Aug. 19 against British Columbia.

Senators, NCC agree to 11-acre land purchase of LeBreton Flats for new arena

Capital Sports Development Inc., a development group led by the Ottawa Senators, and the National Capital Commission have announced they've signed an agreement of purchase of sale for 11-acre land parcels at LeBreton Flats. The site would be used to build a multipurpose entertainment venue closer to the city's downtown, compared to the Canadian Tire Centre, which is 30 minutes west of the city's core. The new arena would serve as the new home of the Ottawa Senators. Financial terms were not disclosed. Advertisement 'We are pleased to reach an agreement of purchase and sale with the NCC to take the next step in this process,' Senators team president Cyril Leeder said in a news release Monday afternoon. 'There are still many more hurdles to clear and we look forward to working with the NCC and other stakeholders to achieve our shared vision of creating an event centre at LeBreton Flats that can be enjoyed by our Ottawa-Gatineau community.' 'This agreement builds on the two previous real estate transactions completed by the NCC since 2022 on the Building LeBreton project that will see over 2000 new housing units along with new retail and commercial spaces built on the site.' Last September, the Senators and the NCC reached an agreement in principle before their memorandum of understanding expired. It was seen as the 'first step' for a new arena to be built. Leeder said the goal was for the Senators to obtain the plot of land sometime in 2025. In recent weeks, both Leeder and Senators owner Michael Andlauer expressed optimism to The Athletic that an arena deal could be consummated by this fall and that it would be sold at 'fair market value.' Leeder also cautioned that once a deal was completed, it wouldn't mean shovels would enter the ground immediately. The next steps for both the Senators and NCC involve zoning plans, completing studies on transport and mobility, figuring out design and approvals, and decontamination of the land in preparation for construction. The Senators expect to be at the Canadian Tire Centre for another five years and have already made some adjustments, such as upgraded seats in the arena's lower bowl. Spot the pattern. Blue Jays to promote prospect Trey Yesavage to Triple A, could be factor down the stretch: Sources

A year ago, Trey Yesavage sat in the Toronto Blue Jays home dugout for the first time. He walked through the Rogers Centre weight room and big-league clubhouse, admiring the facilities he one day hoped to use. The young pitcher grinned as cameras flanked him in the dugout, looking around in awe. Yesavage is now one call away from walking back into those big-league facilities and home dugout. The Jays' top pitching prospect will be promoted to Triple-A Buffalo this week, a league source confirmed. With Toronto (69-50) fighting for playoff seeding in the final weeks of the 2025 season, Yesavage is now a call-up away from contributing to Toronto's pennant chase. Advertisement The 2024 first-round pick entered the year second in Keith Law's ranking of Blue Jays prospects. At the end of May, he ranked as the sixth-best right-handed pitching prospect in all of baseball and the 47th-overall prospect. Going into the 2024 MLB Draft, Law noted Yesavage was one of the most major-league ready arms in the class. Starting his first professional season in Low-A Dunedin, Yesavage has now earned three promotions in five months, pushing to the top of Toronto's farm. Utilizing a funky arm slot and a four-pitch mix — including a plus fastball, slider and splitter — the 22-year-old struck out 134 batters in his first 80 2/3 minor-league innings. He owns the third-most strikeouts in all of minor-league baseball. Yesavage experienced a slight command dip when promoted to Double A in June, walking seven batters in his first 6 2/3 innings, but has walked just four over the following six outings. He took three weeks off from game action around the 2025 All-Star break. The pause slowed the righty's rising workload, which should allow him to pitch through the end of the season without reaching an innings cap, league sources said. In early August, Blue Jays manager John Schneider mentioned Yesavage, alongside lefty Adam Macko, as a potential big-league pitching option down the stretch. 'I think Yesavage could (factor in),' Schneider said. 'I know he's not on the 40-man, but I think he could.' With five healthy starters in the big-league rotation and Shane Bieber and Alek Manoah working back from Tommy John surgeries at the top of Toronto's system, the Jays' starting pitching depth appears to be in a good place. However, Yesavage came out of the bullpen for the first time in his professional career last week, throwing five innings of relief with nine strikeouts at New Hampshire. That flexibility could position Yesavage to fill any role for Toronto in the final weeks of the season. He's already moved up three levels this season and now sits on the cusp of his big-league debut. Spot the pattern. Connect the terms Find the hidden link between sports terms Play today's puzzle

Barcelona in Miami? Spain's LaLiga Moves Closer to Hosting U.S.-Based Game

Lamine Yamal playing an actual regular-season match for Barcelona at the home of the NFL's Miami Dolphins? It could happen. Soccer fans in the U.S. have long been used to seeing some of Europe's biggest clubs play exhibition matches and friendlies during the summer, but now Spain's LaLiga is closer to hosting a regular-season match stateside. And it would include the league's defending champions. The Spanish soccer federation on Monday approved a request for the match between Barça and Villarreal to be played in Miami on Dec. 20. The federation will now seek approval from soccer governing bodies UEFA and FIFA. The 17th-round match in LaLiga would be played at the Hard Rock Stadium. Staging a match abroad has been part of the league's goal of promoting soccer and its brand in other countries. The league is in a long-term partnership with sports and entertainment group Relevent Sports, which is part of Stephen Ross' portfolio of companies including Hard Rock Stadium, the Miami Dolphins, the Formula One's Miami Grand Prix and the Miami Open tennis tournament. LaLiga has been pushing to host a regular-season match in the U.S. for numerous years, similarly to the way the NFL has hosted games in Europe, Mexico and Brazil. In 2018-19, the Spanish league proposed a game between Barcelona and Girona. Another game between Villarreal and Athletico Madrid for the following season fell through. Interestingly enough, the Dolphins will be playing a regular-season game in Spain – taking on the Washington Commanders on Nov. 16 at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium – home of Barcelona's longtime rivals, Real Madrid.
