Mehbooba Mufti slams NC govt's holiday proposal as ‘lip service'
'Omar Abdullah government's proposal sent to the LG about declaring July 13 and December 5 as public holidays would have carried weight if the speaker had supported the PDP's resolution for the same in the assembly,' said Mufti in a press release issued by the PDP.
Srinagar, Jul 10 (PTI) Taking potshots at the ruling National Conference after Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather rejected a resolution submitted by Pulwama MLA Waheed Para for restoration of public holidays on July 13 and December 5, PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti on Thursday said the 'exercise looks more like a lip service than any serious effort'.
The PDP chief said the National Conference's double speak on the issue has been exposed by dropping the resolution.
'By dropping the PDP's July 13 Martyrs' Day resolution, the J&K Assembly has exposed the NC's double-speak on Kashmir's history. Their silence proves complicity, not commitment,' said Mufti.
'The outright rejection of the resolution by the speaker in the assembly was both unexpected and deeply disappointing, undermining any credibility the subsequent move by the NC-led government might claim,' the PDP said.
'As it stands, this entire exercise looks more like a symbolic gesture and political lip service than a serious, sincere effort to preserve the historical and democratic identity of Jammu & Kashmir,' the party added.
The PDP further said it believes that July 13, 1931 marks the beginning of Kashmir's political awakening and resistance to autocracy, and 'the martyrdom of 22 brave individuals must be formally honoured, not just in words but through institutional recognition'.
'PDP reiterates its unwavering commitment to preserving the dignity and memory of the 1931 martyrs and safeguarding the democratic foundations they laid. We will continue to resist all attempts. either covert or overt to erase or dilute Kashmir's past to suit present-day political conveniences,' the party added. PTI MIJ AS AS

What he said after meeting Putin Texas at the center of the protests The wave of protests comes as Texas Republicans consider a mid-decade redistricting plan, reportedly at President Donald Trump's request, that could hand the GOP five new congressional seats ahead of the 2026 midterms. In response, Texas House Democrats fled the state earlier this month to prevent a quorum and block the vote. They have demanded that Republicans end their special session and that Democrats in California advance their own offsetting maps before returning. According to CNN, the event page for the Austin rally stated, 'Texas is being used as a testing ground for extremist policies and partisan games that do not reflect our values.' Anti-Trump protests will be held from Texas to California The fight, The Guardian report added, has spilled beyond Texas. California Governor Gavin Newsom was quoted as saying that Democrats will push forward with their own redistricting plan, which will add five Democratic seats, but only if Republican states advance their efforts. Per the report, Democrats have argued that Trump and his allies are attempting to 'rig the system' by redrawing congressional maps. Ken Martin, chair of the Democratic National Committee, was quoted as saying that Trump knows he cannot win on his ideas and is changing the rules. The DNC is helping coordinate the demonstrations. Inside the nationwide protests against Trump While the main spotlight is on Austin, demonstrations are spreading across the United States. Protestors are gathering at Central Park in New York City, and organizers are painting banners and signs across the city in Washington, DC. Meanwhile, California will see creative protests in locations like a Tesla showroom in Palo Alto. Moreover, in Florida, Missouri, and Ohio, rallies are expected to be held in Sarasota, Jefferson City, and Cincinnati. Apart from speeches, events include teach-ins, banner drops, art-making, and musical performances. US team may defer Aug 25 India visit for trade pact talks: Official
Agency: PTI New Delhi, Aug 16 (PTI) A US team, which was scheduled to visit India from August 25, for the next round of negotiations for the proposed bilateral trade agreement is likely to defer the meeting to a later date, an official said. So far, five rounds of talks have been completed for the proposed bilateral trade agreement (BTA) and a US team is scheduled to visit India for the sixth round of talks. The negotiations were scheduled from August 25-29. 'This visit is likely to be rescheduled," the official, who did not wish to be named, said. Deferment or rescheduling of the meeting assumes significance as the US has announced a staggering 50 per cent duty on Indian goods. The US is pressing for greater market access in politically sensitive areas such as agri and dairy sectors, which India cannot accept as it affects the livelihood of small and marginal farmers. India has stated that it will not compromise the interests of farmers and cattle rearers. The US and India have announced plans to conclude the first phase of BTA by fall (September-October) of 2025. The two countries are aiming at more than doubling the bilateral trade to USD 500 billion by 2030, from the present USD 191 billion. While the 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods entering the US has come into effect from August 7, an additional 25 per cent, was announced on India as penalty for buying crude oil and military equipment from Russia, will come into effect from August 27. During April-July, the country's exports to the US increased 21.64 per cent to USD 33.53 billion, while imports rose 12.33 per cent to USD 17.41 billion, according to commerce ministry data. The US was the largest trading partner of India in the April-July period (USD 12.56 billion bilateral trade) 2025-26. India's exports to America are recording positive growth since April this year. Vaiko slams ED raids, backs DMK alliance
Trichy: MDMK general secretary Vaiko on Saturday condemned the enforcement directorate raids on premises linked to minister I Periyasamy, alleging that the Union government was misusing central agencies to target opposition leaders. "The Centre is using income tax and enforcement departments to intimidate opponents and stifle voices. That is why raids are being conducted at the house of minister Periyasamy. This is strongly condemnable," he told reporters in Trichy. Vaiko dismissed speculation of a rift within the DMK-led alliance, saying: "Some media outlets are deliberately spreading lies that we are yearning for ministerial posts. That is false. MDMK continues to support DMK based on a decision we took years ago. The DMK alliance will secure the biggest victory in the 2026 assembly elections." He also expressed concern over reports that Indian students could be sent to join the Russian army. "My son Durai Vaiko has already met the external affairs minister, senior officials, and the prime minister on this issue. Has Russian President Putin become Hitler? Is the Russian army going to act like the Nazis again? The Indian government should immediately intervene and bring back the students," he said.
