A fourth suspect has been arrested in connection with the murder of the Eastern Cape's Emalahleni local municipality chief whip Xoliseka Lali, after an intensive investigation by the provincial serious violent crime investigation and tracing unit.
Police spokesperson Brig Nobuhle Gantana said Lali was shot dead at his home in Komani (Queenstown) on July 21.
Three suspects — Bavuyise Mdingi, Mvuzo Mafanya and Sonwabiso Siko — were arrested in Mthatha on Monday. Their case was enrolled in the Komani magistrate's court on Wednesday and postponed to August 6 for legal representation.
On Wednesday, investigators traced and arrested a fourth suspect in Mthatha. Gantana said 'the suspect co-operated with authorities and led them to a friend's house, where three unlicensed pistols and ammunition were recovered'.
The recovered firearms will undergo ballistic testing to determine any link to other crimes.
A separate case of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition has been opened. The fourth suspect and his friend face these charges and are expected to appear in the Mthatha magistrate's court on Thursday.
According to Gantana, the fourth suspect will also be charged with Lali's murder and is scheduled to appear in the Komani magistrate's court on Friday.
Acting Eastern Cape police commissioner Maj-Gen Thandiswa Kupiso commended the investigation team for their swift action and the recovery of the illegal weapons.
The investigation is continuing.

Ex-Umzimkhulu municipal manager to remain behind bars until August 14

One of the alleged masterminds in the murder of former ANC Youth League secretary-general Sindiso Magaqa will remain behind bars after his case was postponed in the Umzimkhulu magistrate's court on Friday. Former Umzimkhulu municipal manager Zweliphansi Stanley Skhosana, 55, appeared briefly in court and his case was postponed to August 14 for a formal bail application. Skhosana was rearrested on Monday in connection with the murder of Magaqa in July 2017. He appeared on charges of conspiracy to commit murder, murder, unlawful possession of a prohibited firearm, unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition and defeating the administration of justice. Skhosana was previously arrested in 2018 with the late mayor of the Harry Gwala district municipality Mluleki Ndobe, businessman Mbulelo Mpofana, two former police officers Sbonelo Myeza and Mlungisi Ncalane, and Sibusiso Ncengwa. Ndobe and Skhosana are believed to be the masterminds who allegedly ordered a hit on Magaqa. Ncengwa, the self confessed hitman, has since been sentenced for Magaqa's murder. He was sentenced last month to 25 years for conspiracy to commit murder, 25 years for murder, 15 years for three counts of attempted murder, nine years for malicious damage to property, 10 years for unlawful possession of a firearm and one year for unlawful possession of ammunition. The sentences are to run concurrently. Ncengwa was already serving 95 years in prison for armed robbery convictions. At the time of his murder, Magaqa was attached to the Umzimkhulu local municipality. He was shot with two other councillors who survived the hit. Magaqa died in hospital in September 2017. The police political killings task team took over the case in July 2018 after the formation of the unit. Within a month, the first hitman, Ncengwa, was arrested. TimesLIVE

Justice department condemns killing of Gqeberha prosecutor

The Department of Justice has expressed shock and outrage following the fatal shooting of a Gqeberha-based prosecutor, Tracy Brown, who was gunned down outside her home in Young Park on Thursday afternoon. Brown, a regional court prosecutor stationed at the New Brighton magistrate's court, was reportedly shot as she arrived at her residence in Lotton Street. The brazen daylight attack comes just months after another prosecutor was fatally shot in Mthatha — both killings occurring in the Eastern Cape. Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi condemned the killing, calling it a 'barbaric act' and urging law enforcement agencies to leave no stone unturned in the hunt for those responsible. 'I am deeply saddened and outraged by the killing of Ms Brown. These senseless acts of violence against officers of the court are unacceptable,' she said. While the motive for the killing remains unclear, Kubayi called on anyone with information to assist the authorities in their investigation. The minister also extended her condolences to Brown's family, friends, and colleagues and emphasised the urgent need to bolster security for prosecutors — especially in the Eastern Cape. 'The existing policy on prosecutor safety includes both employee assistance and close protection. However, the recent attacks reveal alarming gaps in implementation. The death of a prosecutor is one too many,' she said. Kubayi noted that she had recently briefed Members of Parliament on the security measures in place for prosecutors but stressed that these need to be reviewed and strengthened in collaboration with other stakeholders in the justice and security cluster. 'Prosecutors must be able to do their work without fear for their lives,' she added. The Herald
