Protesters scuffle with security forces near Manipur Raj Bhavan
Imphal, A scuffle broke out between protesters and security forces on Sunday while they were on their way to gherao the Raj Bhavan here against the removal of the state's name from a government bus.
The protesters responding to a call by COCOMI to stage mass agitation gathered at Khwairamband and took out a rally for some 500 metres before they were stopped by security forces. They were demanding an apology from Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla over an alleged insult to Manipur's identity.
Security forces fired several rounds of tear gas shells to disperse the protesters in front of Kangla Gate, some 150 metres from Raj Bhavan gate.
Five protesters have been admitted to hospital with injuries, a hospital official said.
One protester told reporters, "The governor continues to disregard the sentiments of the people by his silence. He and his administration has completely humiliated the state's historical and cultural legacy all the while administering the state. The inquiry commission set up by the government to probe the incident is not enough and does not mention anything about penalising those who were involved."
The protest follows outrage over a reported directive to remove "Manipur" from Manipur State Transport bus with journalists on board on May 20 en route to the Shirui Festival in Ukhrul district.
COCOMI has announced statewide agitation and demanded the resignation of the Chief Secretary, DGP, and Security Advisor.
The Manipur government on Wednesday ordered a probe into the allegations that security personnel forced to cover the state's name on a bus taking journalists to the Shirui Lily festival.
It was alleged that security forces had stopped the state-run bus, on which journalists were being taken by the government to cover the tourism festival in Ukhrul district on Tuesday, and forced the Directorate of Information and Public Relations staffers to cover the state's name written on the windshield with a white paper.
The government formed a two-member inquiry committee, and said that it will "examine facts and circumstances involving security personnel and Manipur State Road Transport Bus carrying media persons to cover the Manipur Shirui festival on May 20 near Gwaltabi checkpost", according to an order issued by the Home Department.

Bharat Mata row: CPI hits out at Raj Bhavan, to hoist Tricolour in protest
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Coming out against the Raj Bhavan over the Bharat Mata row, CPI state secretary Binoy Viswam on Friday said all branches of the party will hoist the national flag and plant saplings on Saturday to underscore the message that Bharat Mata is truly represented by the Tricolour. He said the saplings will be nurtured by the party branches as symbols of national unity. 'The events that unfolded in the past 48 hours in the Raj Bhavan, culminating in the sanctification of an image associated with the RSS in the official residence of the constitutional authority, cannot be condoned by anyone who celebrates the idea of India and honours the Constitution in letter and spirit,' Binoy said. Elaborating on the circumstances that led to the controversy, he said on World Environment Day on June 5, the agriculture department headed by Minister P Prasad decided to distribute and plant saplings with the participation of the honourable Governor at the Raj Bhavan. 'On June 4, the minister's office received a 'revised' schedule of programme in which 'prayer' was replaced with 'lighting of the lamp' and paying 'floral tributes to Bharatamba' (image of Bharat Mata allegedly used by the RSS at its functions),' he said. Binoy said Prasad called the official in charge at Raj Bhavan and enquired about the changes. 'He was told floral offerings would be made to a portrait of Bharatamba. The minister said details of the portrait should be shared as it is a government event and unprecedented changes, for both the government and Raj Bhavan, are now being incorporated,' he said.

'CM's office instructed full arrangements despite risks': Section of police force fumes, says senior officers have been made scapegoats
BENGALURU: The suspension of Bengaluru city police commissioner B Dayananda and four other senior officers has triggered a backlash within the police force. From constables to inspectors, many are furious and feel betrayed by the very govt they serve. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now A police inspector said the suspensions in this context is unprecedented in Indian policing, adding that the state govt was directly involved in organising the celebrations. 'The chief minister's office instructed him (Dayananda) to proceed with full arrangements regardless of the risks. If accountability must be fixed, it should start with those in the govt,' he said. Head constable Narasimharaju from Madiwala police station staged a protest in front of Raj Bhavan against Dayananda's suspension. He was detained, taken to Vidhana Soudha police station, and released after providing an apology. An assistant sub-inspector from the central division, termed the suspensions politically motivated. 'There is video proof of deputy CM DK Shivakumar waving the RCB flag and welcoming the team. They wanted to take credit, and now they've made scapegoats of hardworking officers. It's demoralising.' 'The police commissioner was against holding a function at Vidhana Soudha. He had pushed for hosting it only at the stadium, but the CM's office insisted on going ahead. We're being punished for following orders,' said a senior inspector. He added: 'We work round the clock, sacrificing family time. And this is what we get!' The chief secretary and other IAS officers are also being castigated by the police force for throwing caution to the wind. Police personnel argue that Dayananda worked tirelessly to make the city safer. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now They say he should not have been punished for a disaster that, they claim, speaks more about the political establishment's greed to bask in the glory of the IPL champions than any real policing lapse. A head constable from south-east division said they were on crowd control from June 3, the night of the IPL final. 'We barely had any rest. Yet, by afternoon on June 4, we were told to again report for duty near the stadium [Chinnaswamy]. And now, they're targeting the commissioner who stood by us!'

Patna: Three days into joining Mahila College, Khagaul, its newly appointed professor in charge, Uday Raj Uday, on Friday submitted a petition to Pataliputra University (PPU) — to which the institution is affiliated — as he was not given the handover. Talking to this newspaper here on Friday, Uday said that he joined as the new professor in charge on June 4 after getting an appointment letter, but he could not receive the handover from outgoing incumbent Usha Vidyarthi as she was away from the college. Also the principal's chamber was locked, as a result he was denied charge, Raj said, adding he has been working in the Mahila College as a professor of Hindi for the past 12 years. According to PPU registrar N K Jha, the university administration took immediate note of the incident and reiterated its stance. "Senior-most teachers of the same colleges are appointed by the university as professor in charge as per the statues and Raj Bhavan directives. Any obstruction in the execution of these academic responsibilities will be viewed seriously," he said. According to university sources, Vidyarthi, who earlier was a teacher at Thakur Prasad Singh College, Patna, had joined as the professor in charge of the Mahila College several years back. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo According to PPU dean of students' welfare Rajeev Ranjan, eight new professors in charge have been appointed, including Arun Kumar Singh at A N College, Patna; Hemant Kumar Jha at M D College, Naubatpur; Lalan Kumar at B S College, Danapur; Awadesh Kumar Yadav at R L S Y College, Bakhtiyarpur; Kanak Bhushan Mishra at Sri Guru Gobind Singh College, Patna City; Madhurendra at S M D College, Punpun; and R P Kachchway at Nalanda College, Biharsharif.
