LIV Golf was back in action this week, opting to play in Europe again the week before the British Open.
The league was in Spain, at venerable Valderrama for the third straight year, playing in LIV Golf Andalucia.
Sergio Garcia was the defending champion, winning last year at one of the courses he loves most in the world.
This year, another Spaniard, Jon Rahm, had a chance to win but came up just short, one shot behind Talor Gooch, who hadn't won in two years.
Gooch shot eight-under total for the three days to take home $4 million from the $20 million purse. Rahm walked away with $2.25 million. Abraham Ancer was third ($1.5 million).
Joaquin Niemann still leads the season's individual standings, although he tied for 23rd in Spain. Rahm is second and Bryson DeChambeau is third.
On the team side, Rahm's Legion XIII squad won at Valderrama. They lead the season's team standings over DeChambeau's Crushers team. Garcia's Fireballs are third.
Several of the league's top players will now head to Northern Ireland for the British Open at Royal Portrush.
The next LIV Golf event is at JCB Golf & Country Club in England from 25-27 July.
Meanwhile, from a South African point of view it was a somewhat forgettable LIV Golf Andalucia event for the all-South African Stinger GC foursome.
Branden Grace finished in a tie for fourth place on 4-under par and earned $833 333 (R14.9 million).
Charl Schwartzel was next best in a tie for 30th on 3-over par which was good enough for a $167 500 (R3 million) pay day.
Louis Oosthuizen struggled to a tie for 45th place finish on 6-over par which saw him bank $124 333 (R2.2 million), while Dean Burmester finished 51st in the 56-player field on 11-over par and took home $60 000 (R1.07 million).
In the team competition, Stinger GC finished 11th out of 13 teams on a cumulative score of 16-over par. The point is, Scottie, you are simply the best
Scottie Scheffler created waves before the British Open when he questioned the meaning of his success in a press conference, repeatedly asking what was the point of his relentless pursuit of golfing glory. After cruising to a four-shot victory at Royal Portrush on Sunday, the world number one American pumped his fists in celebration. 'Thanks to the fans for all the support,' Scheffler said after lifting the Claret Jug. 'I know I wasn't the fan favourite today so I appreciate you guys coming out to support. Overall, it's been a great week, the fan support was tremendous. It was a really fun week to be able to play in front of such a great crowd.' Scheffler's son Bennett fell over as he tried to run to his dad on the green before the British Open champion scooped him up and held him alongside the trophy. 'Thanks to my wife and son — I love you very much and can't wait to get home and celebrate,' Scheffler said. One lift of the Claret Jug and everything changes. Scottie Scheffler, Champion Golfer of the Year. — The Open (@TheOpen) July 20, 2025 'To my parents and the rest of the team, I can't thank you guys enough. I've got the best support team. Everyone does such a great job of working together.' There was a strong sense of inevitability about Scheffler winning his fourth major title and second of the year. Three early birdies sent him seven shots clear and even when he double-bogeyed the eighth hole, failing to escape from a bunker at the first attempt, there was no panic. Scheffler birdied the ninth with a five-foot putt, reverted to his risk-free strategy and picked up another shot at the 12th with a nerveless eight-footer. Six pars followed and he finished the week with only three bogeys alongside his late double. Watching him celebrate his victory, it was hard not to think about his pre-tournament comments. 'This is not a fulfilling life,' he said. 'It's fulfilling from the sense of accomplishment but it's not fulfilling from a sense of the deepest places of your heart,' the 29-year-old said. The winning putt. This is the one. — The Open (@TheOpen) July 20, 2025 Scheffler has dominated golf since 2022. He won the Masters in 2022 and 2024, and the Olympic gold medal last year as whispers in golf have likened his dominance to that of 15-times major champion Tiger Woods in his prime. His rivals are in no doubt about his quality. 'I played with him the first two days, and honestly I thought he was going to birdie every hole,' 2019 Portrush Open champion Shane Lowry said. 'It was incredible to watch.' American Bryson DeChambeau, the twice US Open champion who finished tied 10th at Portrush, played against Scheffler many times during their youth. 'I knew at college he was going to be a good player, but not this good. He's setting a benchmark we all want to get to,' DeChambeau said. 'Scottie's in a league of his own right now. He's incredible. He really is. 'I don't think we thought the golfing world would see someone as dominant as Tiger come through so soon, and here's Scottie sort of taking that throne.'

OPINION: Winning teams bring cheer to South Africa
From Banyana to the Boks to the U20 rugby stars, there was plenty to cheer this last weekend. Bathobele Hlekani of South Africa celebrates with his team-mates and the trophy after the Junior Boks won the U20 Championship in Italy. Picture:When it's good, it's really good. There is nothing quite like the South African sports fan … when our teams win and are successful we're the best supporters out there, but when we lose, we can moan for days. But today we can all be proudly South African and celebrate a great sporting weekend. And we're not quite done yet either because there's some way to go for the Proteas, who're playing in a tri-series tournament in Zimbabwe, while Banyana Banyana are still in the running to defend their Wafcon title, so there could be more celebrations to come. But for now, let's celebrate Banyana, who have qualified for the Wafcon semifinals after beating Senegal 4-1 on penalties on Saturday night in Morocco. They next face Nigeria on Tuesday. Before Andile Dlamini's shot-stopping heroics, our rugby teams got the SA flag flying high with the reigning world champions, the Springboks, and the Junior Boks winning important matches. Future stars Siya Kolisi, back after a lengthy injury break, led the Boks to a big 55-10 win against Georgia in Mbombela; the side wrapping up their mid-year Tests unbeaten. They will next turn their attention to the Rugby Championship and bigger challenges, but things are looking good for Rassie Erasmus and his charges. And then it was the turn of Riley Norton and his powerful Junior Boks team to beat their New Zealand counterparts in the final of the U20 Championship, to lift the title for the first time in 13 years. What a performance that was by our young players and future Bok stars. Just like the senior Boks, who didn't lose a game in the last four weeks, Norton's team went unbeaten through the tournament in Italy, to be crowned junior champions of the world. We cannot wait to see how these young stars of the future develop and progress in their careers. All of these achievements and wins come not long after Temba Bavuma's Test Proteas won the championship final in London, beating Australia inside four days. It's good being a South African sports fan right now, so let's all enjoy it.
