Scottie Scheffler has the chance to make history this year, and with how well he's been playing, you'd be a fool to bet against him. That said, there are dozens of elite golfers all vying for the Cup this year. It would come as no shock if someone like Collin Morikawa, Sepp Straka, or Maverick McNealy earned the Cup as well, especially considering one of the biggest competitors, Rory McIlroy decided not to tee it up for the first tournament of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. The St. Jude Championship will eliminate 19 golfers from the contenders' pool, narrowing the field from 69 to just 50. Cameron Young will be competing in the FedEx St. Jude Championship, the first leg of the PGA Tour's FedEx Playoffs, starting Thursday. Here are five things to know about the winner of the Wyndham Championship: Cameron Young's first PGA Tour win was wire-to-wire Young, 28, entered the Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C., with more second-place finishes (seven) than any player on the PGA Tour without a victory since 2003. That ended August 3 with a wire-to-wire win . Young closed with a 22-under 258, six shots ahead of Mac Meissner. Young became the 1,000th player to win on the PGA TOUR, dating back to Willie Park Jr. in the 1860 Open Championship. Steady but not spectacular during five years on Tour Young, the 2022 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year, has been consistently in the top 50 of the world rankings since landing at No. 44 in March 2022, with the exception of three months this season when he missed six cuts in the first 11 events. He has at least five top 10s in the last four years. Young jumped from No. 44 to No. 21 in the world with his win at Wyndham. His highest ranking was 13th in March 2024. Young won the AJGA Polo Golf Junior Classic in 2014 and a year later represented the United States in both the Junior Ryder Cup and Junior Golf World Cup. He attended Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C., about 30 miles from the site of his first PGA win, graduating in 2019 with a degree in economics. Young could make a case for 2025 Ryder Cup team At No. 15 in the Ryder Cup standings, Young is in position where captain Keegan Bradley has to at least think about making him one of his six captain's picks to go along with the top six in the standings. For Young, the Ryder Cup would be a home game, being played at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, N.Y., about 60 miles south of where he was born. Young held the course record at Bethpage Black — a 64 in the final round of the 2017 Metropolitan PGA's New York State Open when he became the event's youngest winner — until Brooks Koepka shot a 63 in the first round of the 2019 PGA Championship. Moved to Florida after graduating from Wake Forest Young moved to Jupiter following his graduation from Wake Forest and joined the Dye Preserve Golf Club. "The culture down there evolves around golf a lot and my life, at least professionally, evolves around golf," Young said. "That's the environment I put myself in." Living in the area made him a great fit to join TGL, the tech-infused, indoor league founded by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy. And his roots made him an obvious choice to join the New York Golf Club, joining Rickie Fowler, Matt Fitzpatrick and Xander Schauffele. Collin Morikawa, Tony Finau find new caddies for FedEx Cup playoffs, maybe Ryder Cup, too
Collin Morikawa, Tony Finau and Jake Knapp have found new caddies this week at the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis. Morikawa has hired veteran caddie Mark Urbanek, who previously worked with Tony Finau for the past five years. Morikawa parted ways with his longtime caddie J.J. Jakovac in late April and hired Joe Greiner. But that partnership only lasted five tournaments together. Morikawa used Billy Foster, who had parted ways with Matt Fitzpatrick, for the Genesis Scottish Open and British Open but had made it clear that he was still in the market for a full-time bag. Urbanek split from Finau ahead of the British Open. Finau used veteran Colin Byrne, who had successful stints with Retief Goosen and Louis Oosthuizen, at the British Open and 3M Open and Brandon Parsons, who had caddied for Bubba Watson on LIV most recently, at the Wyndham Championship last week. He has hired Tim Tucker, who is best known as Bryson DeChambeau's bagman when he won the 2020 U.S. Open. Tucker was on the bag for Kurt Kitayama but split with him after the John Deere Classic last month. Kitayama won the 3M Open two weeks later with his brother, Daniel, caddying for him. He's expected to remain on the bag for the remainder of the season. And let's wrap up this edition of the caddie carousel with an update on Greiner. He's had a busy season, parting ways with childhood friend Max Homa in late March. Greiner came off the bench to work for Justin Thomas at the Masters when JT's regular caddie, Matt Minister, was sidelined with an injury. Thomas won one week later with Greiner by his side at the RBC Heritage. Thomas welcomed Minister back and Greiner joined Morikawa, but that relationship stopped ahead of the Rocket Classic, where Morikawa, who is breaking in his fifth different caddie of the season this week, had Korn Ferry Tour pro and former Cal teammate KK Limbhasut fill in for him during a week that he couldn't get into the field. Greiner has landed a new bag this week, too, at the first FedEx Cup playoff event. He'll be caddying for Jake Knapp, who shot 59 at PGA National in February, and enters the playoffs at No. 47. Knapp's agent confirmed the move. Stay tuned because the caddie carousel has been spinning fast and furious all season long.
