Despite competition from alternatives like Novo Nordisk 's Wegovy, Eli Lilly is capturing strong demand, evident in first-quarter revenue of $12.7 billion that surged 45% year over year for the period ending March 31. In light of these achievements, Viking Therapeutics has large shoes to fill. Viking's VK2735 GLP-1/GIP dual-agonist delivered a 15% weight loss in just 13 weeks during its Phase 2 VENTURE trial, demonstrating rapid efficacy that far outpaces the baseline trajectories of Zepbound or Wegovy. There are also indications that patients can continue the medication for sustained, potentially greater weight loss, unlike some GLP-1 therapies, where efficacy plateaus.
Furthermore, VK2735's early tolerability data show mostly mild to moderate side effects, such as nausea, supporting a favorable safety profile -- a critical advantage given reports of more serious adverse reactions from other GLP-1 drugs, including rare gastroparesis issues. If these results hold in further testing, VK2735 could emerge with a best-in-class profile, driving accelerated global adoption in the obesity treatment market.
With $852 million in cash and no debt as of March 31, management is confident in its resources to advance VK2735, and it's already preparing for eventual FDA approval. The company recently announced a manufacturing supply agreement to secure annual capacity for up to 100 million autoinjectors, 100 million vials and syringe products, and over 1 billion oral tablets ahead of a possible large-scale commercial launch in the coming years, assuming all goes well.

It's unlikely that Viking Therapeutics will become the next Eli Lilly anytime soon, and it remains a highly speculative investment given the uncertainties surrounding its pipeline and regulatory approval timeline.
Nevertheless, positive readouts from VK2735 later this year could provide the catalyst needed for the stock to rebound. Investors with a long time horizon who are confident that Viking will disrupt the GLP-1 market and validate its R&D platform might consider taking a small position in the stock today within a diversified portfolio. Government watchdog gives Manitoba minister title of ‘worst finance minister in the country': report
Manitoba Finance Minister Adrien Sala has received an overall F grade from the Canadian Taxpayers Federation on provincial spending, debt, debt interest and tax relief. (THE CANADIAN PRESS/John Woods) The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) has given Manitoba's finance minister the title of 'worst finance minister in the country,' according to a report on provincial government spending. The organization that is 'dedicated to lower taxes, less waste and accountable government' released its 2025 Finance Minister Report Card—ranking ministers based on provincial spending, debt, debt interest, and tax relief. The report compared provincial budgets from last year to this year and took into consideration other provincial fiscal announcements. Manitoba Finance Minister Adrien Sala received the lowest grade according to the report, an overall F, which he shares with Newfoundland and Labrador's Finance Minister Siobhan Coady. The report indicates that Coady also received the title of 'worst finance minister in the country.' Lowest grade for tax relief among provinces: report 'Unfortunately, Manitoba is not performing well financially compared to other finance ministers in the country,' said Gage Haubrich, CTF prairie director. 'Manitoba was one of the only provinces this year to actually hike taxes in its provincial budget, and it did in a sneaky, underhanded way, known as bracket creep,' he said. Haubrich said that Manitoba's government has stopped linking income tax brackets to inflation, which will cost Manitoba taxpayers $82 million this year, per the report. Manitoba received the lowest grade for tax relief among the provinces. 'So that means just by getting a cost-of-living raise, not actually making any more money, you can get bumped up into a higher tax bracket, and that increases your taxes,' said Haubrich. Gage Haubrich Canadian Taxpayers Federation prairie director Gage Haubrich said that the provincial government's decision to stop linking income tax brackets to inflation is 'a very sneaky tax hike.' (Zoom) He said the longer bracket creep sticks around, the more money taxpayers are going to pay from compounding inflation. 'It's a very sneaky tax hike,' Haubrich said. He added the last time Manitoba got rid of bracket creep was in 2017. The report says that the government 'introduced a small cut to the province's payroll tax and an increase to the homeowner's affordability tax credit' but adds that the cuts save taxpayers less than what the bracket creep will cost them. F grade for debt interest payments: report Manitoba also received an F grade for debt interest payments, along with Quebec and Newfoundland and Labrador. The report says that the Manitoba debt interest payment will be $2.3 billion this year, working out to be $1,554 per person, only behind Newfoundland and Labrador at $2,088 per person. The province also received a D grade for a spending increase, listed at approximately 7.1 per cent, and the same grade for debt, which is planned to increase to $1 billion compared to last year's budget, per the report. 'Manitoba is on solid financial footing,' says Sala In an emailed statement from Sala, he said, 'Our plan was recently given an A+ by S&P Global Ratings, which means independent experts believe Manitoba is managing its finances responsibly.' 'This lowers borrowing costs and creates more stability for Manitobans in uncertain times, with a greater capacity to invest in the things that matter, like health care, affordability and public safety.' Sala added that 'Manitoba is on solid financial footing.' The report says that Saskatchewan's finance minister is 'performing the best,' with an overall B+ grade. 'No finance minister in the country earned an A grade for their budget, because all finance ministers are continuing or planning to rack up debt and waste millions of taxpayer dollars on debt interest payments,' says the report.

N.S. wants to go 'back to the table' on federal pharmacare deal
An official with Nova Scotia's Health Department says the province wants to get back into negotiations with the federal government on a pharmacare agreement. Stacy Burgess, executive director of clinical care and delivery, made the comments at a meeting of the standing committee on health at Province House on Tuesday. "Health Canada is aware that we want to come back to the table for further discussions, so we're waiting for that invite," she told reporters following the meeting. She said she couldn't provide any details about past negotiations as she isn't directly involved in the work. The Trudeau Liberal government passed legislation last year for a universal pharmacare program. However, since health care falls under provincial and territorial jurisdiction, each province and territory must sign an agreement with Ottawa to tap into the program. British Columbia, Manitoba, Prince Edward Island and the Yukon have signed agreements for the first phase of national pharmacare, which includes coverage for diabetes medication and some prescription contraceptives. Pharmacist Kari Ellen Graham said signing a deal is a "no-brainer." Graham is the founder of Access Now Nova Scotia, a group that advocates for free birth control, and was a witness at the health committee meeting. "Unfortunately Nova Scotia is lagging behind a little bit right now, but I was very encouraged with the conversations that we had in the legislature," she told reporters. 'Completely aligned,' government MLA tells advocates Graham pointed to comments from some government MLAs who expressed support for universal contraceptive coverage. "I sit here as a Nova Scotian, as a woman, completely aligned with the case you've made," Progressive Conservative MLA Susan Corkum-Greek told the panel of witnesses. She said the government is "very interested" in reaching a pharmacare deal and doesn't want to leave money on the table. But Corkum-Greek also expressed some hesitancy. She hearkened back to the federal-provincial funding arrangement on child care, which the previous provincial Liberal government signed. Corkum-Greek said the deal was "short-sighted" in leaving out private child-care providers. The Progressive Conservative government has since tried unsuccessfully to reopen the child-care deal with Ottawa. "It does highlight that the devil truly is in the details," said Corkum-Greek. Corkum-Greek would not agree to an interview after the committee meeting. Holding out for 'best deal' Burgess said the department will be looking to get "the best deal," which she described as one that is financially responsible, doesn't interfere with any existing programs and ensures long-term funding. The other pharmacare deals are for five years. Graham said she's also hoping for a good deal, but she doesn't think that means Nova Scotia should wait any longer. "We've put decades of research into this and, really, it's a no-brainer.… We need to step up, we need to move forward." She said she hopes Nova Scotia will push for more contraceptive coverage than the other provinces and the Yukon got. The four pharmacare deals that have already been struck all include the same suite of contraceptives — mostly hormonal pills and intrauterine devices, or IUDs. Graham said at least a half-dozen options are left out of those deals. "We'll be looking for all contraceptives to be on the list," she said.

City, transit union reach tentative agreement
The city and ETS workers reached a tentative agreement on Monday following months of negotiations. ETS workers are represented by the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 569. The ATU will hold a ratification vote with its members in the coming days. The City of Edmonton did not provide further details as the process is still ongoing. 'Both parties are pleased to have reached a tentative agreement that balances the needs of Edmonton transit workers while considering the sustainability of city finances,' said a statement issued by the city Tuesday. The city and the ATU began negotiations on Aug. 14, 2024, and have met for 17 bargaining and mediation sessions since then. The last contract ended on Dec. 30, 2023. The tentative agreement, which needs to be ratified by both parties before coming into effect, will cover a four-year term from Dec. 31, 2023 to Dec. 11, 2027.
