Good news for driving licence cards in South Africa
According to Mybroadband , this is thanks to the Johannesburg Metro Police Department's (JMPD) launch of a cutting-edge handheld traffic enforcement system.
Unveiled by City of Johannesburg public safety MMC Mgcini Tshwaku on Friday, 8 August 2025, the device gives officers instant access to driver and vehicle records, even during load-shedding or without network coverage.
The setup includes modified smartphones with portable printers, able to verify driver's licence card details, flag stolen vehicles, detect fraudulent cards, and pull traffic violation histories from the Electronic National Traffic Information System (eNatis).
Accident reports can also be captured in under five minutes, streamlining roadside operations.
From images at the launch, the device in use appears to be Honeywell's ScanPal EDA52, an enterprise-grade mobile computer with secure connectivity and a barcode scanning engine that quickly reads the information on driving licence cards and discs.
Professional driving expert Rob Handfield-Jones says the system shows how much more useful and relevant licence cards can become when paired with the right digital tools.
'This proves that physical cards can work hand-in-hand with technology to make law enforcement faster, more accurate, and more reliable,' he said, as per Mybroadband .
By combining physical cards with advanced mobile verification, traffic officers can confirm authenticity on the spot, ensuring only valid, legal drivers are on the road.
For motorists, it means faster roadside checks, less waiting, and greater confidence that their official licence card remains a powerful, recognised form of identification on the road.

A 15-year-old learner was arrested after stabbing his schoolmate in KwaMhlanga, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), on Thursday, 14 August 2025. Police received a call about a student who was stabbed and needed an ambulance. They immediately rushed to the school and found the victim lying face up with a stab wound on his left chest. The suspect accused the victim of stealing his cell phone before assaulting and forcing him into the boot. Community members recalled seeing the 49-year-old suspect driving a white Mercedes-Benz sedan forcing someone into the boot of the car at Naledi Mall, Phuthaditjhaba. Investigations led the police to a house in Phuthaditjhaba, where they found the vehicle parked in the yard. The police then instructed the suspect to open the boot, where they discovered the victim. 'Police discovered the alleged victim with visible injuries, including an open wound to his right cheek and lower lip,' read the police statement. The victim was rushed to the hospital for further treatment. A case of kidnapping and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm is under investigation. Sandton CPF celebrates women and community safety
Chilli Lane Shopping Centre in Sunninghill was alive with conversation, flowers, and a spirit of unity as the Sandton Community Policing Forum (CPF) Sector 1 hosted its Women's Day celebration. The event combined tribute, awareness, and community engagement, recognising the vital role women play in society, while strengthening ties between residents and law enforcement. Read more: Douglasdale CPF calls for school shoe donations The meet-and-greet allowed community members to interact directly with representatives from Sandton SAPS, Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), private security companies, and the City of Johannesburg's Health Department. Residents were encouraged to voice concerns, ask questions, and learn more about resources available to them. Roshan Byjnal, public relations officer for Sandton CPF, said the celebration was about more than honouring women. 'Women have gone beyond being a moms, wives, and businesswomen. Women are now leaders in every aspect of the community, but it's also about raising awareness on gender-based violence is a major challenge. We want every woman to know she is not alone. There is help, and the CPF, SAPS, and our partners are here to support you.' As part of the programme, several women were honoured for their contributions to the community. Police officials also led awareness exercises to highlight safety issues and demonstrate available support structures. Violence in transport sector sparks government response
The Department of Transport has condemned the violence and criminality that claimed the life of an e-hailing driver and left two others injured during an incident at Maponya Mall, Soweto, on Wednesday. In a statement on Thursday, Transport Minister Barbara Creecy and Deputy Minister Mkhuleko Hlengwa expressed their condolences to the bereaved family and reiterated that such behaviour has no place in South Africa's public transport sector. 'Those responsible must face the full might of the law,' the department said. ALSO READ: One dead in suspected taxi violence at Maponya Mall According to reports, violence broke out at the popular Soweto mall, allegedly involving taxi operators and e-hailing drivers. Gauteng police have since been monitoring a protest by community members outside the shopping centre. Tackling the root causes of violence The department said it is working to address the broader challenges affecting the public transport system, with persistent violence at the top of the agenda. At a meeting held on 25 April 2025, Minister Creecy and leaders of the taxi industry jointly denounced violence and agreed to establish a task team between the National and Gauteng Provincial Departments of Transport. ALSO READ: WATCH: Community protests after the death and injuries of e-hailing drivers The team's priority is to fast-track the digitisation of operating licence applications to resolve route encroachment disputes — a major cause of taxi-related violence. Industry leaders have been asked to reflect on the matter and submit concrete proposals to government. Reforms and legislation The Department of Transport is also implementing the National Land Transport Information System (NLTIS), which will link operating licences to the National Traffic Information System (eNATIS) and prevent the unlawful use of a single licence for multiple vehicles. Meanwhile, legislative changes are paving the way for greater regulation of e-hailing services. In 2024, President Cyril Ramaphosa signed into law amendments to the National Land Transport Act (NLTA) of 2009, enabling e-hailing operators to apply for licences like other public transport providers. The regulations have been approved and are awaiting translation into a second official language before gazetting and implementation.
