Exciting Juan Soto News Emerges Before Mets-Braves Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Stop if you've heard this one before: New York Mets outfielder Juan Soto is about to make MLB history.
Lost amid Soto's rocky first Mets season is his continued ascent up MLB leaderboards, especially after the calendar hit June. Soto is dominating opposing pitching this month, hitting .340 with five homers, 10 RBI, and a 9-18 K-BB ratio; that's a .522 on-base percentage and a 1.222 OPS.

Things are about to get even better. Soto has 999 career hits after going 2-for-3 in Tuesday's 5-4 loss to the rival Atlanta Braves. USA Today's Bob Nightengale reported that Soto's next hit would put him in a small club with Hall of Famers Mel Ott and Mickey Mantle, a club comprised of players who recorded 1,000 hits, 200 homers, and 700 walks before the age of 27.
In fact, Soto is about to enter unprecedented territory. The four-time All-Star has 999 hits, 215 home runs, and 830 walks—and he doesn't even turn 27 until October.

Soto's impressive June has him hitting .252 with 14 home runs, 37 RBI, and a .861 OPS over 72 games. He's provided 2.9 bWAR on a Mets team that still has a two-game lead over the Philadelphia Phillies in the NL East.

Soto has a long way to go before he can equal Mantle's seven championships. For now, let's see if he can surpass Ott and win a second ring.

Braves Trade Announcement Could Mean Marcell Ozuna 'Good as Gone'

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Atlanta Braves pulled off an extra-innings win against the rival New York Mets on Tuesday, but it's going to take a whole lot more to turn the season around. The Braves have a losing record and sit in third place in the National League East as injury setbacks and struggles at the plate have plagued their season. Given those struggles and the notable star players on the roster, the Braves seemed as if they could be heading toward seller status at the upcoming trade deadline. But president of baseball operations Alex Anthopoulos made an announcement to the contrary. "We're not selling," Anthopoulos said during an appearance on 680 The Fan's "Cellini and Dimino." "(E)specially a player under team control beyond this year." (Photo by) Petersen/Getty Anthopoulos added that caveat when asked specifically about reigning Cy Young Award winner Chris Sale, who has an $18 million club option for next year. But it was also a pretty telling hedge when it comes to designated hitter Marcell Ozuna, who won't be under team control beyond this year unless the Braves sign him to an extension. "That's an important distinction, one that leaves the door open for really the only path Atlanta has left to make a splash at the deadline: a trade of Marcell Ozuna," according to Chris Landers of FanSided, who added that Anthopoulos' comments "all but confirms" the "slugger is as good as gone." Anthopoulos noted that the Braves expect to add to the roster by the deadline and that the team is exploring trades now. But with few intriguing prospects to deal away and an unwillingness to move any players with future club control, it seems a swap of Ozuna could be the only path the team has to a significant external addition. Ronald Acuna Jr. Earns New Nickname From MLB During Braves Game

Ronald Acuna Jr. Earns New Nickname From MLB During Braves Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Atlanta Braves star Ronald Acuna Jr. missed about a year of action after he tore his ACL last May. But he's back now, and he appears to be rounding into shape. Advertisement On Monday, the Braves defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 7-1 in Wisconsin, and Acuna had two hits in three at-bats, which included a home run in the fifth inning when they started to take control of the game. It was his fifth home run in 16 games this year, as well as his eighth run batted in. Major League Baseball gave him a new nickname on X: "Ronald Aura Jr". Acuna was the National League MVP in 2023, his last fully healthy season, when he knocked in 106 RBIs and 41 homers. Midway through the 2021 season, he tore his other ACL, and he could only sit and watch as Atlanta powered its way to a World Series championship. Atlanta Braves' right fielder Ronald Acuna JrDale Zanine-Imagn Images It is just about a certainty that Atlanta won't win it all this year, and it may not even reach the playoffs. Monday's victory snapped a seven-game losing streak for the team, and it currently has a 28-37 record, which puts it 13.5 games behind the first-place New York Mets in the NL East. Advertisement Its roster is different compared to that triumphant 2021 campaign. Freddie Freeman, who was the NL MVP in 2020, joined the Los Angeles Dodgers as a free agent in March 2022. Pitcher Max Fried, who won the Gold Glove and Silver Slugger award in 2021, is now a member of the New York Yankees.
