Los Angeles native Max Homa on how the fires there affected him
Los Angeles native Max Homa said "it was the first time I felt like a deep connection to one of these natural disasters" as he watched the news.
LA JOLLA, Calif. – Max Homa was at home in Arizona last month when news broke of the wildfires that would ravage the greater Los Angeles area. Homa has lived through numerous natural disasters but perhaps because he grew up in Valencia, California, and considers his victory at the 2021 Genesis Invitational, the tournament he attended in his youth, to be the highlight of his career, he was glued to the news coverage in a more personal way.
'For whatever reason this one, I think because I've been to the area so much and I have family there and tons of friends there, I've driven those streets, when I turned on the news I knew exactly where they were,' he said on Tuesday during his pre-tournament press conference ahead of the Genesis Invitational. 'It just like hit me harder.'
So much so, in fact, that Homa was motivated to come up with a way to do his part in the relief effort. 'I think your gut reaction to most ideas is that's not enough, we need to do something bigger,' he said.
But on Tuesday he and two-time major winner Collin Morikawa, who grew up in the foothills of the Verdugo Mountain in L.A. County, played a few holes on Torrey Pines's North Course with Christian Cruz, a member of the Pasadena community with more than 15 years of service to both the Pasadena Unified School District and the City of Pasadena as well as a local youth soccer coach. For more than two decades, Cruz has called Altadena home, where he shares a household with his sister Carla and his beloved niece, eight-year-old Mia.
In the early hours of Jan. 8, the Eaton Fire tore through neighborhoods, reducing homes to ashes. That same night, while Christian was working at the Pasadena Emergency Shelter, helping to provide safety and care for hundreds of evacuees, he received a devastating call from his sister. With little warning, Carla and Mia were forced to flee with nothing but the clothes on their backs. While they were grateful to be safe, their lives have been upended. They are now facing the daunting reality of displacement, navigating the overwhelming challenge of rebuilding from nothing.
Genesis, the title sponsor of this week's Tour event, announced Tuesday that it is donating $8 million to wildfire relief efforts while also partnering with TGR Live, the operator of the Genesis Invitational, and the PGA Tour to launch California Rises, a fundraising initiative. During tournament competition, every shot will have extra incentive through 'Birdies for Good.' For every birdie and eagle made during the Genesis Invitational, $300 will be donated to California Rises, with $10,000 donated should a hole-in-one occur. Others in the golf world have stepped up to the plate too, including equipment-maker PXG, which pledged a $1-million matching challenge to Team Rubicon, veteran first responders leading the efforts, and lifestyle brand Johnnie-O, which has provided thousands of clothing items to victims, including Pepperdine students and local families.
Beginning at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am and continuing this week, Morikawa said he would donate $1,000 per birdie and $2,000 per eagle to the California Community Foundation and the L.A. Fire Department Foundation.
'We've seen this too often. I think even with the most recent one for me that hit home was the Lahaina fires. Fires happen. People kind of forget and then you move on to the next cycle,' Morikawa said on Tuesday during his pre-tournament press conference. 'I realize that's how news and media works, but for how big of an impact Los Angeles has gone through with everything with the fires, you just have to keep creating awareness as much as you can. It's amazing to help out in my little bit and hopefully we make a lot of birdies starting Thursday.'
Due to the recent devastating wildfires in Los Angeles, and out of respect for those affected, the decision was made to relocate the Genesis Invitational from Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades to Torrey Pines' South Course, which hosted the Farmers Insurance Open three weeks earlier. It marks the first time since 2020 that two different Tour tournaments were played at the same venue in the same season: the Workday Charity Open and the Memorial Tournament were played in back-to-back weeks at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio, due to COVID-19.
First responders and firefighters from California will be on-site as guests of the tournament with exclusive access, including spots in the official tournament pro-am, interactions with Tour players and special recognition throughout the week as a thank you for their services. Ticket fees from all tickets purchased for the 2025 tournament will be donated to the California Rises initiative, and tournament attendees can purchase California Rises merchandise available at the tournament shop and Torrey Pines pro shop, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to charity.
'What I guess I kind of realized yesterday getting to see the Cruz family in person react to getting their gifts (which included a new Genesis vehicle) and hearing what Genesis and the Tour was doing to help, getting to see their faces and the emotion, almost a bit of like relief from how awful their story is. Makes you realize that like anything helps. I think that was good to see. Selfishly, it was cool to be a part of just to get to see the true joy that something like that brought them,' Homa said. 'I'm very, very proud to be from Los Angeles and I am looking forward to being a part of and continuing to watch the city rebuild and everyone come together.
'I think that's the beauty in a way of some of these awful things that happen is you get to see the massive hearts and these inspiring stories of people who will go out of their way to help a person they've never met in their life. I find that to be some kind of glimmer of sunshine in some pretty awful times… this has been inspiring to do more and to continue to try and help the best I can.'

Check it out: Justin Herbert highlights from celebrity golf event Justin Herbert signing a baby is an all time GOATed moment 🤣 @amfamchamp — ESPN Madison (@ESPNMadison) June 7, 2025 While things are on the slower side for quarterback Justin Herbert at this point of time, he's using his spare time to do things that he enjoys doing, including golfing. This past weekend, Herbert partook in the AmFam Championship, a PGA Tour event, played at TPC Wisconsin. He paired up with NFL legend Charles Woodson, as the two took on soccer legend Mia Hamm and two-time U.S. Open champion and event host Andy North. The event was to raise money for a children's hospital. Ultimately, Herbert and Woodson came up short against Hamm and North. But the event brought plenty of highlights of the Chargers signal-caller, including a clip of him signing the back of a baby's Chargers shirt. Just SOME of our favorite shots from Saturday's @amfamchamp Celebrity Foursome! Can we run it back again next weekend? #AmFamChamp — ESPN Madison (@ESPNMadison) June 8, 2025 Thanks @MiaHamm, @CharlesWoodson, Justin Herbert and host Andy North for a fun day! Team North-Hamm won the #AmFamChamp Celebrity Foursome and will have a $25,000 donation made in their names from the @StrickerFNDN to the American Family Children's Hospital. — AmFam Championship (@amfamchamp) June 8, 2025

Niemann wins LIV Golf Virginia for 4th victory in the Saudi-funded tour's first 8 events of the year

GAINESVILLE, Va. (AP) — Joaquin Niemann of Chile won LIV Golf Virginia on Sunday for his fourth victory in the Saudi-funded tour's first eight events of the season, closing with an 8-under 63 to beat Graeme McDowell and Anirban Lahiri by a stroke. Niemann broke out of a logjam at the top with birdies on Nos. 14-17 and parred the par-4 18th to finish at 15-under 198 at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club. The 26-year-old Niemann also won this year in Australia, Singapore and Mexico. He has six career LIV victories after winning twice on the PGA Tour. 'Pretty cool to be in this place, in this position right now,' Niemann said. 'I'm pretty thankful.' McDowell shot 66, and second-round leader Lahiri had a 68. Bryson DeChambeau, preparing for his U.S. Open title defense at Oakmont, had a 65 to tie for fourth with Phil Mickelson (65) and Bubba Watson (67) at 13 under. Jon Rahm was 10 under after a 68. DeChambeau and Lahiri led the Crushers to their second straight team title and record eighth overall, with Paul Casey and Charles Howell III completing the lineup. 'We're a beast of a team,' DeChambeau said, Mickelson holed a backward chip off a steep slope in heavy greenside rough for a birdie late in his round. 'One of my better ones,' Mickelson said. DeChambeau added: 'Vintage Phil. Got to be one of the greatest shots I've ever seen in my entire life.' ___ AP golf:

Ryan Fox wins Canadian Open playoff. Joaquin Niemann has 4th LIV Golf victory of the season

CALEDON, Ontario (AP) — Ryan Fox of New Zealand won for the second time in five weeks on the PGA Tour with another memorable shot in a playoff, this time a 3-wood to 7 feet on the fourth extra hole Sunday to beat Sam Burns in the RBC Canadian Open. Fox won the Myrtle Beach Classic last month by chipping in for birdie to win a three-man playoff. This one on the TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley took a little longer. What turned out to be the winning shot might be more memorable. Fox smoked a 3-wood that landed softly just left of the pin and settled 7 feet away. Burns pulled his 3-wood some 55 feet left of the front right pin. He ran his eagle putt 8 feet by and missed that one. Fox missed his eagle try before tapping in for birdie. Fox holed a birdie putt from just inside 18 feet on the par-5 18th in regulation for a 4-under 66 that allowed him to join Sam Burns at 18-under 262. Burns had finished some two hours earlier with a birdie on the final hole for a 62. They played the 18th four more times — the PGA Tour moved the pin position from far left to front right after two extra holes — and there was nothing compelling about the extra holes. Fox delivered the goods on the final hole and now has two wins in just over a month. The victory moved the 38-year-old Fox from No. 75 to No. 32 in the world, getting him into the U.S. Open next week for being among the top 60 in the world ranking. LIV Golf League GAINESVILLE, Va. (AP) — Joaquin Niemann of Chile won LIV Golf Virginia for his fourth victory in the Saudi-funded tour's first eight events of the season, closing with an 8-under 63 to beat Graeme McDowell (66) and Anirban Lahiri (68) by a stroke. Bryson DeChambeau, preparing for his U.S. Open title defense at Oakmont, had a 65 to tie for fourth with Phil Mickelson (65) and Bubba Watson (67) at 13 under. LPGA Tour GALLOWAY, N.J. (AP) — Jennifer Kupcho closed with an 8-foot birdie putt in light rain to hold off Ilhee Lee in the ShopRite LPGA Classic, ending a drought of nearly three years without winning. Kupcho, whose four LPGA Tour titles include a major at the Chevron Championship, birdied three of the last five holes for a 5-under 66. She took the lead with a 20-foot birdie putt from just off the green on the 14th, and avoided a playoff with the putt on 18. Lee was the 36-hole leader going into the final round on a rain-soaked Bay Course at Seaview Hotel, so drenched that the par-3 17th was moved up to play only 76 yards. She had two early bogeys and shot 39 on the front to fall back. But the South Korean finished strong, with five birdies on the back, including the last two holes, for a 68. It wasn't enough to catch Kupcho, who finished at 15-under 198 in one of only two LPGA events contested over 54 holes. European Tour AMSTERDAM (AP) — Connor Syme of Scotland captured his first European tour title when he held steady for a 1-under 70 for a two-shot victory over Joakim Lagergren on Sweden in the KLM Open. Syme went into the final round with a two-shot lead and Lagergren never got any closer at The International course. The Swede was still in range with four holes to play, but Lagergren came up woefully short on the par-5 15th and took two to reach the green, making bogey. Lagergren also missed an 8-foot par putt on the par-3 17th to fall four shots behind. He closed with an eagle for a 70. Syme finished on 11-under 273 to win in his 182nd start on the European tour. PGA Tour Champions MADISON, Wis. (AP) — European Ryder Cup captains and teammates Darren Clarke and Thomas Bjorn won the American Family Insurance Championship, shooting a 7-under 64 in better-ball play for a four-stroke victory over four teams. The tournament hosted by Steve Stricker — who tied for second with brother-in-law Mario Tiziani — switched to the team format this year, giving the PGA Tour Champions its only team event. Clarke and Bjorn finished at 32-under 181 at TPC Wisconsin. They opened with a better-ball 59 and shot a 58 on Saturday in a scramble round. The 56-year-old Clarke, from Northern Ireland, won for the fifth time on the 59-and-over tour. The 54-year-old Bjorn, from Denmark, won his first Champions title. Striker and Tiziani closed with a 65 to match the teams of Alex Cejka-Soren Kjeldsen (59), Doug Barron-Dicky Pride (69) and Steve Flesch-Paul Goydos (64) at 28 under. Korn Ferry Tour GREER, S.C. (AP) — Austin Smotherman birdied three of his last four holes and closed with a 4-under 67 for a three-shot victory in the BMW Charity Pro-Am on the Korn Ferry Tour. Smotherman won for the second time on the Korn Ferry Tour, his other title coming in 2021 during a season that first sent him to the PGA Tour. This win moves him to No. 4 on the Korn Ferry points list. He finished at 25-under 260. Sebastian Cappelen (66), Pierceson Coody (67) and Carl Yuan (71) tied for second. Yuan had a one-shot lead to start the final round and opened with four birdies in seven holes. But he made two double bogeys in a three-hole stretch around the turn and never caught up. Felix Mory of France closed with a 2-under 69 and made birdie on the first playoff hole against Santiago Tarrio to win the Swiss Challenge on the Challenge Tour. ...
