National Lottery reveals which Oasis star's name is luckier

As Oasis prepare to make their long-awaited return to Irish shores, the National Lottery has taken a deep dive into the historic data of previous winners. It turns out the Gallagher rivalry extends right into the jackpot stakes, with the lottery discovering which brother's name is luckier. The data doesn't lie, and it revealed that the winner in this race is Noel. The name Noel is luckier than Liam. Pic: Emmett/Fear PR/PA Wire Since 1988, players named Noel have appeared as winners of high-tier prizes 18% more often than those named Liam. This means that the Noels come out on top ahead of the Liams in this Gallagher rivalry. If you happen to be from Mayo, like the duo's mother Peggy Gallagher, you're certainly not 'looking back in anger'. Wednesday's jackpot is an estimated €15million. Pic: Shutterstock. The county has produced a whopping 209 National Lottery winners since its inception in 1988, giving a new meaning to 'west is best'. With the band back together, and the nation gearing up for a nostalgia-fuelled singalong, the National Lottery is tipping its hat to all past winners, especially the Noels, Liams, and indeed victorious Mayo locals. Meanwhile, this Wednesday's Lotto Jackpot rolls to an estimated €15million. Pic: AFP STRINGER/AFP via Getty Images Lotto players dreaming of becoming Ireland's next millionaire are reminded that tickets can be purchased in-store, through the National Lottery app or at ahead of the 7.45pm cut-off time for sales on Wednesday evening. Darragh O'Dwyer, National Lottery spokesperson said: 'With Oasis returning to Irish stages, we thought it was the perfect time to explore how the Gallagher rivalry plays out in our own records. 'Looking at historic data, we've seen more high-tier wins associated with the name Noel than Liam, an interesting coincidence that adds a fun twist to the excitement around the band's reunion. 'Whether you're a Noel, a Liam, or from Mayo like the Gallaghers themselves, it's always fascinating to see the stories behind our winners.' Nearly 30 cent in every €1 spent on National Lottery games goes back to 'Good Causes' in the areas of sport, youth, health, welfare, education, arts, heritage and the Irish Language. In total, more than €6.5billion has been raised for 'Good Causes' since the National Lottery was established 37 years ago. In 2024 alone, €239.3million was raised for local 'Good Causes' in communities across Ireland. The National Lottery is only for those aged 18+ and they urge people to 'Support Responsibly'.

‘Fab weekend' planned as Dublin celebrates ties with Liverpool and The Beatles

CELEBRATIONS will take place this month to mark the connection between Dublin city and The Beatles. Dublin City Council has announced The Beatles Weekend, an inaugural celebration of the fab four - who hailed from Liverpool but all had Irish connections - which will take place later this month. "This really is going to be a fab weekend and comes to us with every good wish from our twin sister city of Liverpool and their world-renowned Cavern Club who also celebrate their annual international Beatles week at the same time,' Lord Mayor of Dublin, Councillor Ray McAdam said. 'I want to thank my predecessor as Lord Mayor Coouncillor Emma Blain,' he added. 'Her official engagement with Liverpool in spring this year, including visiting Rice Lane Primary School in the Penny Lane ward, ensured we revitalise our long-standing twinning relationship with the great city of Liverpool.' Dublin City Council has announced its inaugural Beatles Weekend will take place this month The planned event, which takes place from August 22 to 24, will also mark the historic connections between the Irish capital, and the city of Liverpool in north west England. 'We share deep and affectionate family and social relations over many generations with Liverpool,' Cllr McAdam said. Jon Keats, The Cavern Club's Director of Operations and Music said the new event supports their own ethos of 'nurturing' the next generation of musical artists. "The Beatles, Liverpool and the Cavern Club will be forever connected, as indeed will Liverpool's relationship with our neighbours over in Dublin,' Mr Keats said. 'The Cavern today is a place of pilgrimage for Beatle fans and indeed, music fans, from all over the world and arguably the place people feel closest to these four lads from Liverpool,' he added. 'Our role as custodians of this unique venue, is to protect this musical and cultural heritage, whilst nurturing and supporting the next generations of artists. The event will take place in Dublin later this month (Pic: Rolling News) 'The inaugural Dublin Beatles weekend very much seems to be a continuation of this ethos - a foot in the past and a hand in the future.' Liverpool's Lord Mayor, Councillor Barabra Murray has also confirmed her support for Dublin's Beatles Weekend. 'Liverpool and Dublin share a deep cultural and historical bond, and nothing exemplifies that better than our mutual love for The Beatles,' she said. 'It's wonderful to see Dublin launching its own Beatles Weekend, echoing the spirit of our own International Beatles Week. 'This celebration not only honours the legacy of four lads who changed music forever, but also strengthens the friendship and twinning between our two great cities,' she added. 'We're proud to stand beside Dublin in this musical tribute and I'm sure everyone will have a fab time.' The Beatles famously played at Dublin's Adelphi on Abbey Street in 1963 and the Council has planned music and dance events at Wigwam on Middle Abbey Street, as well as family-friendly activities in Temple Bar's Meeting House Square and Parliament Street during their Beatles weekend. Kevin McManus, Head of UNESCO City of Music at Culture Liverpool, said the Dublin event marks the shared Irish heritage of the fab four. 'As a UNESCO City of Music we are constantly celebrating our rich, and diverse music offer as well as our incredible music heritage," he said. "Of course the 'Four Lads Who Shook the World' have pride of place whenever we talk about Liverpool music history. "Their legacy is celebrated constantly not just in the city of their birth but around the world and it is fitting that our close friends in Dublin are now holding this joyous event which draws attention to the close connection between The Beatles and Dublin. "The Beatles famously all had family connections to Ireland and their music was definitely rooted in the strong Irish connections of their home city.' For event details click here. Wicklow group celebrates Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2025 win

For Wicklow, it was the Bray branch of Comhaltas Ceoiltóirí na hÉireann which emerged victorious, with Réiltín Nic Eoin in third place (Comhrá Gaeilge, 9-11), Ferdia Mac Eoin in first place (Comhrá Gaeilge, 11-13) and Fionn Crean Mac Oireachtaigh also in third place (Píb Uilleann / Uilleann Pipes, 12-15). More than 800,000 people thronged the streets of the town over the nine days, while tens of thousands of people attended the special opening by President Michael D Higgins. Wexford town pulsed with Irish rhythm and revelry as age-old traditions were celebrated by new generations and the vibrancy of the Fleadh emanated throughout the streets. Every year, the Fleadh provides a cultural meeting place for those who carry the great traditions of Irish music, song and dance in their hearts. Commenting on the event, Dr Labhrás Ó'Murchú, Ardstiúrthóir, Comhaltas Ceoltóiri Éireann, said: 'When Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann commenced in 1951 it was obviously a very small event. In the intervening years the Fleadh has grown to be a Festival of world proportions. "It emphasises how our childhood traditions have prospered in the intervening years, and today plays a significant role in tourism with over 25pc of the 800,000 attending, coming from out of state.' At the core of the Fleadh are the competitions that see traditional musicians, dancers, singers and story tellers of all ages and backgrounds competing at All-Ireland level, following victories at regional competitions. Up to 20,000 performers played, sang and danced at the All Ireland Fleadh. The standards were high and the music more than lived up to the expectations of judges who had a very difficult job choosing winners for each category and competition. Scoil Éigse, the official summer school organised by Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, ran throughout the week with over 800 Irish and international students of all ages taking part in various music, singing, dancing and Irish language classes. Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann (CCÉ) announced that Belfast will be the host city for Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2026, which will take place from Sunday 2nd August to Sunday 9th August 2026. This is only the second time the Fleadh has been held in Northern Ireland, having taken place in Derry in 2013. Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann is an annual event and is the world's largest celebration of Irish trad music, language, songs and dance. Meanwhile, a celebration of sorts for the Bray branch of Comhaltas Ceoiltóirí na hÉireann will take place on Saturday, August 23, from 2pm to 3.30pm, as past and present members will entertain gatherers outside the Holy Redeemer Church, with a selection of traditional Irish music tunes. The 'Trad Jam' will feature tin whistles, flutes, fiddles, banjos, bodhrans, concertinas, uileann pipes and harps, so be sure to drop by and join in on the fun. In September, traditional Irish music classes will resume in Coláiste Ráithín, Bray on a Wednesday night and in Gaelscoil na gCloch Liath on a Thursday night. For enrolment details, go to:
