'The posts glorified caste and incited casteist sentiments and create misunderstanding and confusion in society. Personnel from the social media wing are identifying such content, including videos and photographs displaying arms and arresting those posting them. Their social media accounts and WhatsApp groups are also being examined and monitored,' Superintendent of Police N Silambarasan said in a press statement.
Further, city police warned people against spreading misinformation and rumours regarding the death of IT employee Kavin Selvaganesh, which is suspected to be a case of honour killing.
In a statement, the police said some social media users are circulating a murder video claiming it to be of Kavin's. 'The incident took place in Andhra Pradesh. There is no connection between that and Kavin's murder. We will take stringent action against those creating law and order issues by spreading such misleading videos,' police said. Kavin was murdered allegedly by S Surjith, whose parents are both sub inspectors of police, on July 27. Surjith and his father Saravanan have been arrested. CB-CID is investigating the case.

Caste killing: investigation will be completed in 60 days, Tamil Nadu government informs High Court
The Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday informed the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court that the investigation in the caste killing of Kavin Selvaganesh would be completed in two months. The court was hearing a public interest litigation petition filed by S.M.A. Pon Gandhimathinathan of Thoothukudi district, who had sought a direction for a CB-CID probe, to be monitored by a Tirunelveli District Judge. More relief sought The petitioner had also sought a direction to the government to provide an adequate compensation of ₹50 lakh under the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Rules to the family of the deceased and to bring in a separate Act to prevent 'honour' killings. He said the accused, Surjith, the brother of the girl Kavin loved, and his father Saravanan, a sub-inspector, had been arrested, while Surjith's mother, Krishnakumari, also a sub-inspector, had not been arrested yet. (The accused belongs to the Most Backward Caste). According to the petitioner, Chandrasekar, father of Kavin, had alleged that inspector of police Kasipandian had earlier threatened Kavin with dire consequences and acted in a biased manner in favour of the family of the accused. Given the fact that the parents of the accused are sub-inspectors and given the role of Kasipandian, a District Judge should monitor the investigation, the petitioner said. Additional Advocate-General M. Ajmal Khan submitted that the investigation would be completed by the CB-CID in 60 days and the final report would be filed. An interim compensation of ₹6 lakh had been handed over to the family. A case was booked under the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. No offender would be allowed to go scot free, it was submitted. A Division Bench of Justices S.M. Subramaniam and A.D. Maria Clete said the CB-CID had started the investigation and the petitioner had not raised any serious allegation against the investigating team. Giving a direction at this point of time would affect the independence of the investigating officers, the Bench said, posting the matter for further hearing after eight weeks. Panel reviews action In Tirunelveli, the Chairperson and Members of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes met Tirunelveli Collector R. Sukumar and top police officers on Tuesday to review the action being taken following the murder of Kavin Selvaganesh. He was killed on July 27. The eight-member Commission, led by its Chairperson Kishor Makwana, met the Collector, top police officers, and the heads of various departments. Dr. Sukumar explained the circumstances that led to the murder and the action taken by the police. The police also presented a report based on their investigation. Inspector-General of Police, Social Justice and Human Rights, B. Shamoondeswari; Tirunelveli City Police Commissioner Santosh Hadimani; Deputy Commissioners of Police Vinodh Shantharam and Prasanna Kumar; District Revenue Officer M. Suganya; and other officials took part at the meeting. The Commission members had planned to visit the spot where Kavin was murdered. But the plan was dropped. After the meeting, they went to Arumugamangalam to meet the family of the deceased.

Srinivasa Rao, IPS, extended financial support to the bereaved family of a deceased police officer by handing over Corpus Fund and Widow Pension cheques as part of the police welfare initiatives. The officer in question, U. Srinivasulu, who was serving as an ARPC (Armed Reserve Police Constable) at the Armed Forces Police Office, passed away in August 2020 due to COVID-19 complications. To assist his family, the District SP presented a cheque of ₹49,800 under the Corpus Fund and a cheque of ₹10,000 under the Widow Pension Scheme. During the occasion, SP T. Srinivasa Rao personally inquired about the family's well-being and the educational status of the officer's children. He assured that the police department will continue to stand by the families of personnel who lose their lives in the line of duty, and emphasized the commitment to their welfare. The SP also instructed the office's Administrative Officer to take necessary steps to ensure that all remaining benefits due to the family are processed and disbursed at the earliest. The event was attended by Administrative Officer Satish, Superintendent Nagamani, and Swathi, wife of the late U. Srinivasulu.

BCA graduate who learned snatching from YouTube, his MSc accomplice held; gold chains recovered: Police
The Chandigarh Police has arrested a BCA graduate and former HR executive of a multinational company in Mohali, who reportedly confessed to learning how to snatch gold chains by watching YouTube videos. His associate, an MSc postgraduate employed at a courier company, has also been arrested. The duo is linked to a series of snatchings across Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula, with gold jewellery worth lakhs recovered during the probe. Five gold chains, a gold mangalsutra, and two gold pendants, have been recovered from the accused, police said. The team, led by Inspector Rajiv Kumar, SHO of the police station 31, arrested the accused Abhishek Ojha (30), a native of Agra currently residing in Panchkula. His associate, Ashok Kumar (28) also from Agra, was also arrested during a follow-up raid in Uttar Pradesh (UP). The accused were arrested in connection with a FIR on July 24, registered at the police station 31, Chandigarh, on the complaint of a local resident, Preeti. She reported that on July 23, at around 8.30 pm, she was returning home when an unidentified bike rider snatched her gold mangalsutra near the AFFWA Complex in Sector 31. She informed police that she would be able to identify the accused if confronted. Following her complaint, the police arrested Ojha on August 1 and recovered a knife from his possession. During the interrogation, he confessed to multiple snatchings in different areas of Chandigarh, including Sectors 31, 34, 36, 39, and 19, as well as in Mohali and Panchkula. He also admitted to sending the snatched jewellery to his associate Ashok in Agra, through courier services. Police obtained a five-day remand for Abhishek and launched raids in Agra and Aligarh, leading to the arrest of Ashok on August 3. Ashok was found in possession of the mangalsutra that had been snatched in the Sector-31 case. He was produced before court and sent to three-day police remand. A subsequent raid conducted in Panchkula on August 4 led to the recovery of three gold chains, two gold pendants, and a pair of number plates. The Bajaj Pulsar N-250 motorcycle used in the crimes, which had no number plate, was also seized. Police also recovered a DTDC courier slip, confirming that the stolen jewellery had been sent to Ashok by Abhishek. Police said that during investigation, it was revealed that Abhishek, a BCA graduate, previously worked as an HR professional at a multinational company in Mohali. He told police he learned how to commit snatching by watching YouTube videos and initially carried out crimes in Agra, where three snatching cases are already registered against him. He later moved to Panchkula in March 2025 and began targeting women across the Tricity areas. He often removed his motorcycle's number plate to evade identification and committed crimes for 'pleasure and easy money'. His associate, Ashok, is an MSc graduate and works in a courier company. While he has no previous criminal record, he played a key role in concealing and storing stolen items on behalf of Abhishek, a police official added. Both accused are currently in police remand, and further investigation is underway to trace more stolen property and examine any additional accomplices involved in the snatching racket, police said.
