Kepler Validates SDA-Compatible Space-to-Ground Laser Links with Cailabs

TORONTO, May 14, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Kepler Communications Inc., a pioneer in optical data relay technology, today announced that it has successfully demonstrated space-to-ground optical data relay with French optical ground station company, Cailabs, paving the way for the future of in-space optical technology.
Kepler has demonstrated full Space Development Agency (SDA) standard data rates and acquisition in multiple space-to-ground scenarios between Kepler's optical Pathfinder satellite equipped with TESAT's SCOT80 in low Earth orbit (LEO) and Cailabs' Optical Ground Station (OGS) in Rennes, France.
'Optical data relay is no longer a theoretical concept. It is tested, proven, and operational in many acquisition scenarios,' said Mina Mitry, chief executive officer and co-founder of Kepler Communications. 'This is a critical milestone in creating resilient on-orbit optical infrastructure, proving our ability to leverage the power of light to improve the future of space communications.'
Successful demonstration of space-to-ground station optical links is a first step to validating other space-to-ground scenarios, including communications with airborne assets. Space-to-ground optical data transmissions are notoriously challenging to achieve, with increased velocities and atmospheric effects imposing pointing, acquisition, and data transfer challenges. The milestone also substantiates the ability to transmit cross-plane space-to-space optical links, a key objective of The Kepler Network, where optical terminals can perform data relay across different orbits.
'Cailabs was very glad to support Kepler on this important validation effort and to collaborate closely with their team. Testing our optical ground station—which mitigates atmospheric turbulence—with multiple terminals and satellites, is key to guaranteeing full operability across diverse scenarios. In that context, we're proud to be part of this successful SDA-compatible space-to-ground link announcement,' said Jeff Huggins, President of Cailabs US.
Kepler is committed to proving and maturing optical technology in a range of operational scenarios by collaborating with industry partners to provide customers with secure, low-latency solutions for mission-critical data.

Two Men Were Fixing an Antenna in New Jersey—and Accidentally Discovered Proof of the Big Bang

How did we get here? Humanity, life on Earth, our planet itself—how did everything in the universe come into being. Well, as far as we know, it all started with the Big Bang. But while the Big Bang theory has certainly been in place for a while, we didn't always have proof that it occurred. It wasn't until 1964 that scientists managed to capture evidence of the explosion that kickstarted our reality—and explosion we can still hear to this day. The story behind the discovery of the cosmic microwave background—the radiation that originated from the Big Bang and now permeates every corner in the universe—is full of twists and turns, accidents and frustrations, trials and errors, and pigeons (yes, pigeons). But it started with a hypothesis: if the Big Bang really happened, we should still be able to hear the ripples it created. Watch Pop Mech's Jackie Appel reveal the story of how two men from New Jersey named Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson made one of the most important discoveries in the history of astronomy—by accident. Using creativity, grit, and a giant horn-shaped radio telescope, they managed to prove once and for all how our universe originally came to be. The work wasn't easy. There were a lot of false starts and baffling data to sort through, and the duo needed to collaborate with an entirely unrelated research team to eventually reach their world-changing conclusion. But even limited as they were by 1960s tech, they managed to make the discovery of a lifetime. See the full episode and learn more about how Penzias and Wilson changed cosmology forever in the video above. People Are NOT HAPPY With Trump's White House Renos

Hi, I'm Alexa, and I usually track the unemployment rate, cost of eggs/beef, gas prices, inflation, and more under the Trump administration. BUT, the numbers aren't enough anymore. Actions speak just as loud. Somehow, we've left A LOT in the hands of this guy. And that guy? Well, he's been giving major ✨Marie Antoinette Energy✨ lately. Consider how, for example, nearly 70% of Americans say they're experiencing financial stress amid continually rising prices. Meanwhile, the Trump administration is bragging about all the money supposedly made from tariffs — aka, money partially coming directly out of your pockets via those rising prices. (At least Marie didn't hear that her people were starving and then add an additional tax on bread.) For many online, the leaders' relationships with their disgruntled and financially struggling public isn't where the similarities end. Instead, the glaring overlap seems to be both Marie and Trump's extravagant spending. Look at the difference in the Oval Office. Here's what it looked like under Biden. And now under Trump. Trump's team has added a LOT of gold. Gold decor on the fireplace mantle... ...and on the fireplace itself. Gold around the crown molding. Gold around the presidential seal on the ceiling. Gold details on the walls. Personalized, golden coasters. Tacky gold drapes. And whatever this gold thing is above the Oval Office door. Trump has also taken it upon himself to (in my opinion) needlessly renovate the White House. He took the famed Rose Garden from this... ...to this. And according to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, more expansions are on the way... Including a gold and white ballroom that's expected to cost around $200 million. And just like the French in the 1790s, Americans are less than impressed. "building a giant ballroom while half the country loses healthcare and is in poverty and can't find housing or rent... i feel like I'm reading about pre-revolution france," one X user wrote. "Listen man, if you wanna live in the palace of Versailles then that's fine, but you can't act surprised when the people eventually start sharpening the guillotine," another added hyperbolically. (This particular tweet was among the most widespread, with 3.3 million views.) Sigh. This administration promised to get rid of wasteful government spending. That was the whole point of DOGE. Yet we're plastering gold on White House walls and building out $200-million ballrooms while nearly 14 million children face hunger in the US as of 2023. Maybe the call is coming from inside the House. Want to know if Trump's economy is actually doing as well as he promised?
