Probe ordered into frequent shutdowns by Lucknow's CG City substation

Hindustan Times25-05-2025

A week after Uttar Pradesh energy minister AK Sharma found during a surprise inspection of the 33/1kV1 kV CG City substation near Raj Bhawan in Lucknow that more than 10 shutdowns had occurred in a single day there, he has ordered a probe to find out the reasons for it.
He flagged the situation as a serious operational lapse, raising concerns over frequent power cuts faced by residents despite government directives for uninterrupted electricity in the state capital.
Citywide audit of substations on
Following the CG City inspection, the minister directed a broader audit of all substations in Lucknow that recorded more than one shutdown in a day. Sharma emphasised that such patterns are indicative of wider systemic inefficiencies, stating, 'If a substation takes more than one shutdown in a day, it directly reflects the multiple power cuts endured by residents, which is unacceptable in the capital city.'
Chief engineer, (Lucknow Electricity Supply Administration (LESA), Ravi Agarwal, said all directives issued by the energy and urban development minister will be implemented. As per him, significant improvements have already been made in the power department's response mechanisms.
'This year, the reaction time to attend to faults has been shorter and the duration of power outages has reduced as compared to previous years,' Agarwal further said, highlighting efforts already underway to enhance service reliability and minimise disruptions for consumers.
Infra upgraded, yet shutdowns persist
The LESA has invested over ₹400 crore under the Centre's Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme to modernise the city's power infrastructure. Despite these upgrades, recurring shutdowns remain a concern.
Officials warned against complacency
The energy minister issued strict directives to power distribution company officials, warning them against complacency. 'Stop sitting inside offices—go to the ground, inspect substations and address the problems firsthand,' Sharma told discom staff. He also hinted at more surprise inspections in the coming weeks to ensure accountability.
Officials have been ordered to ensure that no feeder experiences more than one shutdown at a time. One of the shutdowns under scrutiny was reportedly executed for the permanent disconnection of a temporary connection—raising questions over the planning and necessity of such outages. Additionally, feeders with excessive load are to be rebalanced immediately to maintain a consistent and stable power supply.
Zero tolerance for frequent outages
Strict warnings have also been issued against frequent tripping, low voltage issues, and unnecessary shutdowns. Officials have been told that such service disruptions will no longer be tolerated, as the administration pushes toward delivering uninterrupted electricity to all corners of the city.

"Friendly nations have understood India's position...", says Congress MP Anand Sharma

Cairo [Egypt], June 4 (ANI): Congress MP Anand Sharma, who is part of the all-party delegation led by NCP-SCP MP Supriya Sule completed their four-nation visit on Wednesday. He issued strong remarks against Pakistan and said that friendly nations extended support to India's position on terrorism and assured backing for a pending UN proposal on a global convention against terrorism. While speaking to ANI in Cairo, Sharma said, 'We are encouraged by the fact that friendly nations have understood India's position. They condemned the terror attack on India.' He confirmed that discussions were held on India's long-pending proposal at the United Nations for a comprehensive international convention against terrorism. 'We also talked about our pending proposal in the UN regarding the comprehensive international convention against terrorism, and we received assurances of support in this regard as well,' he added. The Congress leader also criticised Pakistan's international outreach, calling it a 'copycat move' in response to India's diplomatic efforts. 'What will they say? They first need to clarify. They should look after their people. They take money from the IMF, and that money is misused by the military; it is used for spreading terrorism... Pakistan must understand that it cannot blackmail; it must look into itself first,' Sharma told ANI. He also commented on global trade tensions and the changing attitude of major economic powers. 'The countries which were the great champions of free trade are seeking to undermine the WTO. However, a rule-based multilateral trade regime is something that the world would continue to need, given the imbalance and disparities, and a one-size-fits-all solution is not workable. But all countries are also engaged in trade negotiations or tariff negotiations with the United States of America after the big disruption of the shocking shocks that are being delivered region-wise. But there is no need to panic...' he explained. While discussing India-Pakistan relations, Sharma reminded that three Indian Prime Ministers had extended diplomatic outreach to Pakistan, only to face betrayal. 'Our three Prime Ministers have talked to their (Pakistan) Prime Ministers and Presidents; Atal Bihar Vajpayee went to Lahore, spoke to Nawaz Sharif, and soon after that, Kargil happened. Then, parliament was attacked. After the Agra meeting, similar things happened, then the Mumbai attack occurred, in which Indian citizens, along with some foreign nationals, were killed... all these things show their intention...' he said, highlighting Pakistan's history of backstabbing India's peace efforts. Earlier, Congress MP Anand Sharma on Saturday said that India gave a 'befitting reply' in response to the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22. Interacting with the Indian community in Addis Ababa, Anand Sharma emphasised that India does not believe in violence and war and highlighted that only the terrorist organisations were targeted in the precise Indian strikes under Operation Sindoor. 'It is an ancient culture of centuries that we do not attack any country, but we gave the attackers a befitting reply. Our army fought back strongly this time too; they targeted only the terrorist organisations.' 'India's thinking is clear that India is not a country that believes in violence and war. It is an ancient culture of centuries that we do not attack any country, but we gave the attackers a befitting reply. Our army fought back strongly this time too; they targeted only the terrorist organisations,' Anand Sharma said. He cornered Pakistan of protecting terrorists while referring to the 26/11 Mumbai terrorist attack. 'When the Mumbai attack or the Parliament attack occurred, the whole world was stunned. But our agencies did the right thing. India did not sleep; it took time to identify the culprits. Cases were filed in America as well, but in Pakistan, cases were not filed contrary to what they had assured the world, the United Nations. Because these attacks were carried out at their behest with their help,' he said. (ANI)

Aiming for upper hand in Bihar polls, BJP connects with Bihari migrants via queries

Months after it began its outreach to migrant Biharis, the BJP has devised a novel way to step up its efforts to connect with them in a bid to persuade them to return home and vote in the upcoming state Assembly polls. As a part of this new exercise, about 150 state BJP leaders, armed with a list of 14 questions, have been travelling through the country in order to reach out to non-resident Biharis, who are estimated to number around 2.75 crore. According to Bihar BJP spokesperson Manoj Sharma, the possibility of migrant Biharis returning to the state to vote is high as the polls are likely to be held in October this year, around the Chhath Puja, one of the main festivals of the state, during which the state sees a return of lakhs of migrants. 'With special trains being run during Chhath Puja, it would be all the more easier for them to travel back to Bihar and cast their votes,' he told The Indian Express. The questionnaire, titled 'Aam Bihari pravisiyon ki jaankari (information on common migrants from Bihar)' accessed by The Indian Express, aims to collect details of the Bihari migrants like name, phone number, address, profession, social category, Assembly segment, native district and also if he / she is a BJP supporter. To assess a migrant's ability to convince others to vote in favour of the BJP, a question related to the person's influence back home features in the list. While one of the questions also seek the details of the voter IDs so that the party could help a migrant get it if that person does not have one, a BJP leader calls the entire exercise a 'game changer'. 'The questionnaire also helps us get Assembly constituency-wise data to work with. Also, the caste data will help us identify our focus areas keeping in mind the social composition of each constituency,' he said. Claiming that the exercise is a follow-up of the party's drive held during Bihar Divas celebrations earlier this year to convince non-resident Biharis to return and vote, Sharma said, 'We have a rough list of all 243 Assembly constituencies, which have between 15,000-20,000 migrants each. Even if we convince 5,000 from each seat to return and vote, it will improve the turnout.' The BJP had appointed its general secretary Tarun Chugh and senior leader Dushyant Kumar Gautam to oversee the 11-day Bihar Divas celebrations in March, where the party reached out to non-resident Biharis by organising 'get-together events'. According to sources, the collected data is being processed and would be uploaded on an app once it is finalised by August. 'The next step would be to call the non-resident Biharis to know if they would return to cast their vote,' a source said.

Cop asks gym to bar entry of Muslims, shunted out

Bhopal: A police sub-inspector has been removed from field duty after he allegedly asked a gym owner not to allow entry to Muslims at the facility in Bhopal, officials said on Tuesday. The action against sub-inspector Dinesh Sharma was taken after a video surfaced on social media showing him purportedly making the controversial comments. 'No Muslim will come here to train or take training. I am telling you this clearly,' the cop was seen instructing the gym owner in the clip. According to the police, some Bajrang Dal members had visited the gym, located in the Ayodhya Nagar area of Bhopal, and raised questions over the presence of Muslim trainers at the facility. After this, the police were called to defuse the tension there. Sharma allegedly made the comments at that time, an official said. After a video of his comments went viral on social media, the police started an investigation into the matter.
