Coventry held at home by Hull in goalless stalemate

Glasgow Times5 days ago
The closest either side came to breaking the deadlock was when Milan van Ewijk's long-range effort struck the woodwork for the hosts in the second half.
The result represents a decent return for the Tigers, who went through a chaotic summer that briefly saw them put under a transfer embargo.
Coventry began brightly and almost led in the third minute when Tatsuhiro Sakamoto bent a low effort narrowly wide of the far post from just outside the area.
Jack Rudoni then looked to have a clear sight of goal from Victor Torp's pass, but Hull captain Charlie Hughes came across to make an excellent block in diverting the ball behind.
The Sky Blues continued to threaten as a pinpoint pass from Jay Dasilva picked out Torp in the area and the Dane chested the ball down for Rudoni whose shot was deflected wide.
Although they were not posing much of an attacking threat themselves, Hull managed to ride out what had been a tricky first 20 minutes before holding their hosts at bay more comfortably.
A long throw from Van Ewijk almost prised them open in the 32nd minute as Rudoni got on the end of it, but Hull goalkeeper Ivor Pandur held onto his headed attempt.
Regan Slater had a rare first-half opening for the visitors four minutes before the break when he advanced into the area only to miscue his shot horribly wide.
Hull then had a good chance to go ahead in the first minute of the second half when Abu Kamara ran onto Cody Drameh's pass down the right and shot straight at Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth despite team-mates arriving in support.
Van Ewijk came close to a brilliant opener for the Sky Blues in the 53rd minute when his stunning effort from outside the box crashed against the angle of post and bar.
Hull were continuing to deny their hosts clear-cut openings, however, with Coventry boss Frank Lampard replacing the ineffective Ephron Mason-Clark with Haji Wright in an effort to find a breakthrough.
The home fans thought they were finally about to have one after 77 minutes, but Liam Kitching's header from Torp's corner was straight at Pandur.

Eze? Savinho? Frank reveals Spurs transfer plan after UEFA Super Cup collapse

Thomas Frank confirmed Tottenham were still 'working very hard' to strengthen in the transfer market after his side surrendered a two-goal lead to lose to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup final. The Dane appeared on course to steer Spurs to a famous victory in his first competitive game in charge, with Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero scoring either side of half time in Udine. But PSG, the Champions League holders, mounted a spirited second-half fightback to force penalties as Lee Kang-in's arrowed strike reduced the deficit before Goncalo Ramos headed home deep into stoppage time to level. Vitinha failed with PSG's opening effort from the spot, but Lucas Chevalier denied Van de Ven before Mathys Tel struck wide from 12 yards to put the Ligue 1 champions within touching distance of a fifth trophy for the year. Nuno Mendes looked confident and clear-headed as he stepped up to take his spot-kick and Guglielmo Vicario hardly stood a chance as the Portuguese almost burst the back of the net to cue rapturous scenes among PSG's travelling support. Despite PSG enjoying 74 per cent of possession across the contest at the Bluenergy Stadium, it was an otherwise encouraging night for Tottenham, especially given the club's less-than-ideal preparation during what has been a summer of upheaval. Romero was announced as Spurs' new captain just hours before kick-off in Italy and deals have been struck for Mohammed Kudus, Tel, Kevin Danso, Luka Vuskovic, Kota Takai and Joao Palhinha across what has been an active transfer window. But with talks reportedly ongoing for Crystal Palace's Eberechi Eze and Manchester City's Savinho and, Frank told TNT Sports: 'We would like to strengthen the squad, no doubt about that. 'We do work very hard to see if we can do that. 'In general, I'm very happy with the squad, but of course, in every window, you'd like to see if you can make the squad stronger before the window closes. That's what we're working hard on.' Luis Enrique conceded that Tottenham probably 'deserved' to win after his PSG side eventually prevailed on penalties – and Frank was 'proud' of his players' overall performance. 'We played a very good game against one of – maybe the best – teams in the world,' the Spurs head coach added. 'I think we had them exactly where we wanted them for 80-something minutes, until the 2-1 goal, which shifted momentum. 'There are so many positives. I'm so proud of the team, the players, the club, the fans. It's a lot to be happy with. It's a coin flip when it goes to a penalty shootout.' According to Frank, his side's first-half display was 'almost perfect' in every aspect. 'We showed that we can be adaptable and pragmatic. We needed to do that against a team like PSG,' he continued. More Trending 'The way we wanted to defend – both high pressure and low defending – was exceptionally good. The first half was top, almost perfect.' The former Brentford boss felt his squad had come on leaps and bounds with their set-piece work since he first took over the reins from Ange Postecoglou in June. 'The set pieces were also very good and very dangerous,' he went on. 'It's key. For any team it should be a weapon. We definitely will focus on that, because it's a key area.' NRL great Josh Reynolds reveals how he was tricked into drinking BOURBON in the middle of a game

Footy legend Josh Reynolds has recalled the moment he accidentally drank bourbon during a game. Playing in the Super League for Hull FC in the derby against bitter rivals Hull Kingston Rovers in 2021, the five-eighth set up a try and was in the mood to celebrate. Speaking on the Boom Rookies podcast, Reynolds confirmed he picked up a Coke bottle that struck his leg when it was thrown onto the field by a fan. Without hesitating, Reynolds drank from the plastic bottle mid-match and was shocked to discover it was filled with bourbon. Days later on social media, rumours were swirling from footy fans that the bottle actually contained urine. 'I was into it (the derby), I bought in,' Reynolds said. 'I was warned in the lead-up to stay away from East Hull as that was where the Hull KR fans were based. 'When we scored that try, I gave them (Hull KR supporters) a little bit (of a spray) and one of their fans launched a bottle. 'Me being an idiot, I had a bit of chug of it ... I spat it back out towards the crowd, who were 30 metres away. It was bourbon, snuck into the ground (by a supporter). 'Then on social media days later, people were saying it was urine. (But) I've tasted a fair bit of bourbon in my time, I can assure you it was bourbon.' Reynolds joined Hull FC from Wests Tigers in 2021, and spent two seasons with the club. Next was a return to his beloved Canterbury Bulldogs, before the fan favourite at Belmore eventually hung up his boots in 2023. The Hull derby is one of the highest-profile rugby league rivalries in Britain, with the two squads separated by the River Hull. The clubs first met in 1899, with bragging rights ensuring the games are always keenly contested, no matter where the teams sit on the ladder. This season Hull KR have impressed in the Super League, losing just three matches to be ladder leaders under coach Willie Peters. Their neighbours - where fellow Aussie John Cartwright is in charge - sit mid-table after 21 matches, with the next derby on September 8.

Thomas Frank makes feelings clear after Tottenham throw away two-goal lead to lose to PSG

Spurs failed to fight off a late PSG fight back in Italy on Wednesday evening in the UEFA Super Cup with Thomas Frank slipping to defeat in his first competitive game as Tottenham boss Thomas Frank claimed he was "happy" with his Tottenham stars - despite Super Cup agony against PSG. The Dane insists the performance should now provide belief Spurs can match any side. ‌ He said after his team lost on penalties in the sweltering Italian heat: "We played a very good game against one of the best teams in the world, maybe the best at this moment in time. ‌ "The goal on 85 minutes shifted momentum but there's so much to be positive about, so I'm happy with the team. There's a lot to be happy with, it's a flip of a coin when you go into a penalty shootout." ‌ Frank claims his stars "gave everything" and added his side were "perfect" for 80 minutes. Goncalo Ramos struck the equaliser after Lee Kang-in pulled one back for PSG. Frank feels Spurs' display can now be a blueprint moving forward to make them extra competitive. He continued: "We showed we can be tactical and pragmatic because we needed to be against a team like PSG. "In one game we showed we can play against almost any team. I'm not in doubt we can do that. That's a positive we can take away." When quizzed on transfers, Frank admitted he'd like to add some more quality. He said: "I'd like to strengthen the squad, no doubt about that. We will work very hard to do that. In general I'm happy with the squad but we'd like to strengthen before the window closes." ‌ The North London side have so far added six new faces to Frank's squad ahead of the new season - Mohammed Kudus' switch from West Ham the headline arrival. Mathys Tel and Kevin Danso have had their loans turned permanent, while Joao Palhinha has penned his own temporary deal from Bayern Munich. Elsewhere, young defenders Luka Vuskovic and Kota Takai have both been signed. Manchester City star Savinho has been identified as a further recruit, with reports suggesting that Spurs have already held talks with their Premier League rivals. Following their Super Cup defeat, Frank's side now have just a couple of days remaining until their Premier League opener. They take on newly-promoted Burnley in North London on Saturday ahead of a blockbuster meeting with Man City next weekend.
