Rajasthan launches first-ever drone cloud seeding experiment for rain. Key details

India Today19 hours ago
Rajasthan is rolling out something new today, India's first drone cloud seeding trial near Ramgarh Dam in Jaipur. Starting at 2 pm, Agriculture Minister Kirodi Lal Meena will launch a one-of-its-kind pilot where 60 drones release rain-making chemicals into clouds.Cloud seeding isn't magic, it's a method that helps clouds with enough moisture release rain by injecting particles like silver iodide or salt. Traditionally, aircraft have done this. Today's experiment brings in drones, offering sharper control and quicker deployment.advertisementThe pilot is a joint effort between the Rajasthan Agriculture Department and US-Bengaluru firm GenX AI, using AI to steer each drone precisely. It's especially useful for arid areas like Rajasthan that find monsoon clouds but often miss out on rain where it's needed.
The event was planned for July 31, but heavy rain warnings pushed it back to today. In the meantime, scientists have been carrying out test runs in Jaipur to get things ready. All safety checks are in place, a string of approvals from the Agriculture Department, Meteorological Department, District Administration, and the DGCA have already come through. Locals have been invited to watch this live demo. There's real hope riding on this test. In 2023, a cloud-seeding effort at Chittorgarh's Bhaisunda Dam cost around Rs 10 crore, but failed because moisture was low. If drones can target just the right clouds, this could be a big win for farmers and drought response in Rajasthan.- Ends

Vehicles without a FASTag will no longer be allowed to enter Tirumala, temple management says

The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), which manages the Sri Venkateswara temple in Andhra Pradesh's Tirupati district, said that vehicles without a FASTag will no longer be allowed to enter Tirumala. Officials said the TTD is also considering allowing only electric vehicles entry into Tirumala in the future. Thousands of devotees visit Tirumala every day in private vehicles and taxis. 'Many individual car owners driving up to Tirumala may not have a FASTag for various reasons. We are issuing an advisory that they should get it before coming to Tirumala. If they do not have it, they should take the help of the facility at Alipiri,' an official said. The TTD said, 'In order to provide better safety standards, prevention of overcrowding and transparent services to the devotees arriving in various vehicles at the Alipiri check point, FASTag will be made mandatory for the vehicles entering Tirumala from August 15.' A facility that issues FASTags have been set up at the Alipiri checkpoint in collaboration with ICICI Bank, officials said. 'It is once again informed that the vehicles without FASTag will be allowed to enter Tirumala only after obtaining the FASTag facility here in the shortest possible time. Devotees are requested to cooperate, or they will not be allowed to enter Tirumala,' the TTD said. The announcement comes as the temple is witnessing over 90,000 devotees on some days, with the TTD finding it difficult not only to manage the pilgrims, but also the incoming traffic. The TTD is also preparing to implement stricter pollution control rules, and allow only battery-operated vehicles into Tirumala. The TTD is encouraging taxi operators to switch to EVs. On Tuesday, a devotee from Bengaluru, Chandra Shekhar, donated two battery buggies worth Rs 11 lakh to the TTD. The board, which has set up some EV charging stations, is in the process of setting up more, officials said. The TTD and the Andhra Pradesh State Transport Corporation are also switching to operating only electric buses to and from Tirumala and Tirupati. In efforts to achieve net zero emissions, the TTD is also allocating its lands at Tirumala and Tirupati to organisations like the New and Renewable Energy Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh for the establishment of EV charging stations and battery swapping stations.

Big Push For ‘Make In India': Cabinet clears 4 new chip plants

New Delhi: The Union Cabinet on Tuesday approved four semiconductor manufacturing projects worth Rs 4,600 crore in Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Punjab under the India Semiconductor Mission. The India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) aims to build a strong semiconductor and display ecosystem, positioning India as a global hub for electronics manufacturing and design. The four approved proposals are from SiCSem, Continental Device India Private Limited (CDIL), 3D Glass Solutions Inc, and Advanced Systems in Package (ASIP) Technologies. SiCSem and 3D Glass Solutions Inc will set up their manufacturing facilities in Odisha. Continental Device India Private Limited (CDIL) is already based in Punjab, and it will expand its discrete manufacturing facility, and ASIP Technologies will start its manufacturing plant in Andhra Pradesh. These proposals are worth Rs 4600 crore and are expected to generate employment opportunities for about 2034 skilled professionals, which will drive up the major creation of indirect jobs. With these four approvals, the total approved projects under ISM reach 10, with cumulative investments of about Rs 1.60 lakh crore in six states. Under this proposal, SiCSem Private Limited partners with Clas-SiC Wafer Fab Ltd, UK, for establishing the integrated facility of Silicon Carbide (SiC) based Compound Semiconductors in Info Valley, Bhubaneswar, Odisha. This is the country's first compound facility producing almost 60,000 wafers and a packaging capacity of 96 million units. Moreover, the products made at this facility will have applications in Missiles, Defence Equipment, Electric Vehicles (EVs), Railway, Fast Chargers, Data Centre racks, Consumer Appliances, and Solar Power Inverters. 3D Glass Solutions Inc (3DGS) will also set up a vertically integrated advanced packaging and embedded glass substrate unit in Info Valley, Bhubneshwar, Odisha. This step will bring the world's most advanced packaging technologies to India for powering the efficiency of the Semiconductor Industry. This facility has a large variety of advanced technologies, including glass interposers and 3D heterogeneous Integration Modules with a planned production capacity of 69,600 glass panel substrates, 50 million assembled units, and 13,200 3DHI modules per annum. Advanced System in Package (ASIP) Technologies has a tech tie-up with APACT Co., Ltd, South Korea. These companies will jointly set up a semiconductor manufacturing unit in Andhra Pradesh with an annual production capacity of 96 billion units. Continental Device (CDIL) will expand its discrete semiconductor manufacturing facility at Mohali, Punjab, and manufacture devices like MOSFETs, IGBTs, Schottky Bypass Diodes, and transistors both in Silicon and Silicon carbide. Devices manufactured at this facility will have applications in Automotive Electronics, including EVs, renewable energy systems, power conversion applications, industrial applications, and communication infrastructure. New facilities will support the growing chip design capabilities in the country. The government already supported it by providing 278 academic institutions and 72 start-ups. The decision to set up an additional four plants will drive India's momentum in both the chip and electronics markets. Setting up new plants will also cater to the growing employees. This mission achieved great success as India's semiconductor chip market is expected to reach USD 100- 110 billion by 2030, as per the report. Plus, India's electronics exports witnessed a surge of over 47 pc YoY in Quarter 1 of FY26 as per the India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA).
