Kalamansi Kafe

Time Out2 days ago

Bangkok's food scene just keeps surprising us! Think it couldn't get any more diverse? Think again. From Italian trattorias and French bistros to fiery Indian curries, the city has it all. But what about the flavours of our neighbours? Can you taste them in the Big Mango? The answer, increasingly, is yes!
Take Filipino cuisine, for example. It's not as widely known as some, but that just means there's more to discover. Enter Kalamansi Kafe, a cosy spot serving home-style Filipino dishes that'll have you coming back for more. Curious about adobo or halo-halo? This is your gateway to the Philippines.
Located in Soi Suan Phlu, Kalamansi Kafe is named after a citrus fruit central to Filipino cooking.. Its story began during the Covid-19 lockdown when owner Sandy Lopez and her daughters started sharing their roots through delivery meals. What started in their home kitchen soon blossomed into a full-fledged restaurant, thanks to Sandy's partnership with her sister Glecy, an experienced cook. And just like that, Bangkok gained an inviting new spot to savour the bold, authentic flavours of the Philippines.
Step inside, and you're welcomed with warm smiles and genuine hospitality. It's as if you're being greeted by family. Even the decor tells a story—don't miss the striking painting of a carabao (the national animal of the Philippines), a nod to the country's heritage and traditions.
So, what makes Filipino food so special? It's the incredible blend of influences – Chinese, Malay, Spanish, and American – that come together in exciting ways. If you've never tried it, prepare for a culinary adventure! The flavours are bold yet balanced, with a mix of sweet, sour, and savoury notes that are less spicy than Thai cuisine but just as delicious.
Not sure where to start? Begin with the chicharon bulaklak (B275), crispy pork ruffles paired with garlic and spiced vinegar – crunchy and addictive! For the main course, you can't miss the pork belly adobo (B298), a Filipino classic made with tender pork belly braised in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and spices. It comes with crispy adobo flakes, a soft-boiled egg, and plenty of sauce – don't forget the rice to soak it all up! Want something heartier? Try the oxtail kare kare (B540), a comforting dish with peanut sauce, banana heart, and sauteed shrimp paste. Seafood lovers, the sugpo sa gata (B790) is a must! These jumbo prawns cooked in coconut milk, garlic and chili are pure indulgence.
Finish your meal with a true crowd-pleaser: halo-halo. This dynamic dessert layers ube ice cream, leche flan, jackfruit, adzuki beans, and more into a colourful, sweet masterpiece. Grab the single serving (B145) for yourself or go big with the barkada size (B380), large enough to share with ten of your closest friends.
Don't forget the drinks! The gin pom pom (B350) is their playful twist on a Filipino favourite. Fresh pomelo, pomegranate juice, and gin come together in a sparkling pink cocktail served in a perfume-style bottle – complete with glitter. It's as fun to sip as it is to admire.

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) THERE'S nothing better than tucking into a tasty homecooked meal, and it's even better if it's a traditional recipe. But one home cook left people scratching their heads after they revealed their attempt at a particular classic dish. 4 home-cook-slammed-sharing-attempt-999490755 Credit: Not known, clear with picture desk 4 home-cook-slammed-sharing-attempt-999490671 Credit: Not known, clear with picture desk 4 The foodie showed off their attempt at making lasagne on Facebook Credit: Getty Despite their best efforts, the food turned out nothing like you would expect, and some people even questioned what they meal was supposed to be in the first place. This came after the wannabe chef took to Facebook to show off their concoction with a picture from before it went into the over and after. "How do you make lasagne, mine came out crispy as hell and I want it soft, please help," the Facebook user wrote alongside the pictures. The first snap shows a dish layered with dry spaghetti, strips of uncooked bacon and slices of American cheese. Unsurprisingly, the meal only looked worse after some time in the oven. Instead of melting, the cheese shrivelled up and burned, and the dry spaghetti didn't look any more enticing either. After sharing the snaps in the popular Facebook group people were so shocked by the food creation they thought the foodie must've been joking. "This has got to be satire," one person commented on the viral post. But others weren't so sure, as a second said: "What in the name of god did you think you were making!?!" And a third chimed in: "I have never seen anything like this, where is the sauce?" The Sun tries Wetherspoons' new menu "I want to laugh but I genuinely don't even know what to think here," another wrote. Meanwhile, others offered some cooking suggestions for their next attempt. "You should start by reading an actual recipe, this is a crime," one said. And another commented: "I dread to think how many Italians you killed making this. Even if it is a joke this post should come with a trigger warning." And someone else quipped: "Who raised you?!" This isn't the first time food fans have been left stunned by a meal. Mum and TikToker Michelle previously caused viewers to lose their appetites as she proudly showed the breakfast she fed her family. The now-viral video, which has racked up a staggering 2.2million views in just two days, sees the parent make scrambled eggs - but with a twist. The nation's most peculiar food combinations revealed Brits reveal unusual food combinations that are so wrong, they feel right Research by LNER claims that a whopping four in five Brits experiment with unusual flavours, and almost a quarter have a 'guilty pleasure' when it comes to unconventional food combinations, Crisps and chocolate Cheese and chocolate Crisps in jam sandwich Chips and milkshake Cheese and bananas Apples with salt and pepper Avocado and chocolate Popcorn and hot sauce Tuna and marmite Gherkins and peanut butter Rather than using actual eggs, the mum whipped up the first meal of the day with a ''scrambled egg mix'' - which was essentially just a powder. To add some extra boost of protein, Michelle also threw in a generous amount of bacon - that had been freeze dried. The gut-churning concoction called for half a cup of the scrambled egg mix which she dissolved with warm water, as well as the bacon bits - which needed to be re-hydrated with cold water. For extra flavour and texture the mum also chucked in some freeze fried cheddar cheese that had to go in the water before as well. Once the egg mixture was ready, Michelle cooked it on the pan, before squeezing the water out of the shredded cheese and throwing a spoonful of the watery bacon. Showing off the final result on her page, the mum tried to convince the viewers it was ''good'' - and the rest of the brood agreed, with the dad dubbing the dish ''yummy''.

Nicola Peltz's pals break silence for first time over Brooklyn Beckham claims

Nicola Peltz's pals address claims that she is "isolating" Brooklyn Beckham in new defence - as sources close to the Beckham family speak of their continued upset as the feud rumbles on Brooklyn Beckham's Instagram video last week in which he said he would 'always choose' his wife must have hurt his parents amid their well-publicised family feud. But other recent social media posts have allegedly proved just, if not more, painful to David and Victoria as the falling out shows no sign of abating. ‌ A picture uploaded to Instagram three days ago shows Brooklyn sipping a pint in a pub, with bottles of his own-brand hot sauce on the table in front of him. ‌ Innocuous enough to outsiders – but friends of the Beckhams recognised the distinctive light fittings and stark green walls in the background. One pal says: 'The picture was taken in London's Wigmore pub, which is part of the Langham Hotel where the Beckhams have sometimes stayed. 'The fact that Brooklyn appeared to be in the country and failed to see any of his family was heartbreaking. And not only that, but here he was posting about it.' Brooklyn, 26, and his wife Nicola Peltz, 30, had flown to London for a joint photoshoot with Italian luxury fashion brand Moncler, which took place less than two miles from the Beckham family home in Holland Park. ‌ Dad David, 50, was not far away – he was pictured with the King at the Chelsea Flower show that day – just three miles from the Wigmore. A pal reveals: 'Brooklyn had kept the visit quiet from not only his mum and dad but his siblings and extended family. It was terribly sad that he had flown thousands of miles to London and hadn't engaged at all. It would have been very easy to meet up.' ‌ Another Instagram post, made on May 16, showed Brooklyn with Nicola's late grandmother to mark the anniversary of her death. He captioned it: 'I miss you and will love you forever.' A friend said: 'Brooklyn's heart is of course in the right place…but it hasn't gone unnoticed how all the while he is posting about Nicola's family he is silent about his own, including his own grandfather whose birthday it was last week.' ‌ To acquaintances of the family, the blame for what they believe are 'performative' social media posts lies with heiress Nicola. They list concerns that she is somehow orchestrating her husband's social media activity, which they claim is out of character, and that she is responsible for 'isolating' Brooklyn from his friends and family. A pal says: 'She is creating conflict where there is none and divides are springing up left, right and centre.' ‌ But a source close to the couple has hit back at suggestions Nicola is 'controlling' her husband – and insists Brooklyn is very much his own man. They reveal: 'She is not isolating him at all. He is free to do what he wants and he loves his wife and they are happy together. They are each other's family.' Brooklyn captioned last weekend's motorbike video, shot in Beverly Hills: 'My whole world. I will love you forever. I always choose you baby.' ‌ The source insists this was 'completely misinterpreted' as being a dig at his own family. The source adds: 'It's a real shame that what Brooklyn did – which was a statement of love for his wife – is being portrayed as something that it's not. 'He loves his wife and everyone should be proud: his parents, his family friends. He stands by his wife and that's a normal thing to be a loving and supportive husband.' ‌ Asked if there was any desire for reconciliation on Brooklyn's side, the source said it was impossible given the highly charged atmosphere. Sources close to Nicola have previously insisted that as 'an outsider coming into the Beckham family, she has helped Brooklyn see the emotional abuse and toxic behaviour within'. ‌ The claims – described as 'patently untrue and ludicrous' by friends of David and Victoria – were the 'nail in the coffin' of any future relationship, according to insiders. Despite this, sources close to Nicola claim she doesn't want any fighting and is upset by the feud being played out publicly. Her friends say she tried to integrate. 'Nicola was working hard to have a healthy relationship,' says one. Pals of the Beckhams dispute this, with one saying: 'It's hard to find a way back after absurd allegations of emotional abuse.' ‌ Despite Nicola's pals claiming she doesn't want a battle, in other facets of her life she is known to fight. Last week it emerged she had hired high-powered celebrity attorney 'Mad Dog' Marty Singer, who has represented stars such as Michael Jackson and Kim Kardashian. Nicola is suing a dog groomer she alleges is responsible for the death of her chihuahua Nala and French bulldog Frankie. ‌ It comes after previous legal battles with her wedding planners. A source said: 'Nicola's family haven't become billionaires by being shy and retiring... it's in their nature to fight for what they believe is right.' As for the feud with her in-laws, many wonder how it will ever resolve. Some say a big sign will be if Brooklyn acknowledges his sister Harper's 14th birthday next month – he did not publicly mark Victoria's 51st nor David's 50th this year. ‌ Brooklyn and Nicola have posted pictures of themselves with Harper, and he is thought to be very fond of his youngest sibling. A pal says: 'Brooklyn isn't talking to his mum and dad, as well as Romeo, because he disapproves of his girlfriend. 'But in that case this 'feud' should start and end with them… 'The fact he has distanced himself from the whole, extended family is what makes this so sad. Perhaps Harper's birthday – and an acknowledgement of it – will be the first steps towards a peace deal.' Watch this space next month – but at this rate peace looks a long way off.
