Geng Upik member gets five years jail
KOTA KINABALU (July 16): A 30-year-old man pleaded guilty of being a member of the organised crime group 'Geng Upik' before High Court judge Datuk Dr Lim Hock Leng on Wednesday.
Zulkahar Dusing was sentenced to five years in prison, effective from March 1, 2024 — the date he was first charged — for being a member of the organised crime group between 2015 and 2023.
He changed his plea to guilty after the prosecution called three witnesses to testify.
The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutors Datuk Nazran Mohd Sham, Lina Hanini Ismail, Siti Hajar Mat Radzi and Nur Ainaa Ridwan.
Zulkahar was on trial with Rahman Burijin, 44, and Jaisalfian Jaineh @ Zaini, 45 under Section 130V(1) of the Penal Code, which provides for a prison sentence of between five and 20 years upon conviction. The trial for Rahman and Jaisalfian is scheduled to continue until July 18.
On July 10, Zulkahar was separately sentenced to 30 years in jail and 12 strokes of the rattan after being found guilty of trafficking 738.6 grams of methamphetamine on May 3, 2023, in Tawau.
According to the case facts, Zulkahar was a member of Geng Upik involved in drug trafficking from 2021 until his arrest in May 2023. As part of the group, he actively distributed dangerous drugs for material gain.
Investigations revealed that the group was linked to several serious drug trafficking cases, including two in Tawau and one in Menggatal.
To date, 15 individuals have been charged in connection with the Geng Upik case. Of these, 12 — including the group leader, Datuk Maslan Sani, 42 — have pleaded guilty. Maslan received a five-year jail term, while 11 others were each sentenced to three years after pleading guilty to an alternative charge of assisting the organised crime group.
Zulkahar was represented by counsels Shahlan Jufri and Mohd Luqman Sqazwan Zabidi Md Zain.

Unemployed man gets death penalty for murder of 3-year-old in Langkawi
KUALA LUMPUR: The Alor Setar High Court has sentenced a 44-year-old unemployed man to death for the murder of a three-year-old girl in Langkawi six years ago. Ramlan Abdul Rashid was found guilty of killing Nur Aisyah Aleya Abdullah at a hospital staff quarters between 9 am and 10 am on Feb 23, 2019, under Section 302 of the Penal Code. Justice Evawani Farisyta Mohammad, in her written judgment published on the judiciary's website on July 31, stated that the victim died from prolonged physical abuse. The court noted the accused showed no remorse and callously disposed of the child's body in a forested area at Gunung Raya without proper burial rites. Forensic evidence confirmed the skull and two teeth found at the scene belonged to the victim. The judge emphasized that the accused, entrusted with the child's care, failed in his duty to protect her. The victim's mother had left her daughter in Ramlan's care while working at a food stall. In January 2019, she moved to a hostel, leaving the child with the accused. A month later, she reported her daughter missing after failing to locate her during a visit. Ramlan initially claimed he handed the girl to another person but refused to disclose details. Police later discovered the remains in March 2019. Deputy public prosecutor Mohd Rizal Fadzil led the prosecution, while the accused was represented by lawyer Ai Cha Ran. - Bernama
