
African Bank fined R700 000 for misleading loan ad campaign
The Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) has fined African Bank R700 000 for a misleading social media campaign that promoted a personal loan as an investment product.
According to BusinessTech , the 'Ke Festive' campaign ran on the bank's social media platforms in December 2023 and featured a prominent public figure encouraging consumers to take out loans with the phrase: 'It's not a skoloto chomi! Ke investment.'
The FSCA found the slogan to be misleading and factually incorrect, as it suggested that the loan product was an investment, when it was in fact a credit facility.
This misrepresentation breached several sections of Conduct Standard 3 of 2020, which governs how financial institutions should treat customers.
Specifically, the bank failed to ensure its advertising was clear, fair, and accurate.
The FSCA highlighted breaches of: Section 6(1): Requiring truthful and non-misleading advertising.
Section 6(3): Prohibiting false or fraudulent statements in advertisements.
The FSCA also found governance lapses in African Bank's internal review and approval processes.
It warned that misleading advertisements can cause consumers to select unsuitable financial products, potentially leading to financial harm.
However, African Bank cooperated with the FSCA and acted promptly to correct the issues.
As a result, R200 000 of the R700 000 fine has been suspended for two years, provided the bank complies with regulatory standards during that period.
The bank has already paid R500 000.
The FSCA urged all financial institutions to treat customers fairly and avoid misleading advertising.
'Fair customer treatment is integral to maintaining public trust and confidence in the integrity of the financial system,' it said.

Peanut butter manufacturer fined R500 000 for contamination in some products
The National Consumer Tribunal has confirmed a settlement agreement between the National Consumer Commission and peanut butter manufacturer House of Natural Butters (Pty) Ltd, after several peanut butter products were found to contain dangerously high levels of aflatoxin, a toxic substance produced by certain moulds. Image: Supplied The National Consumer Tribunal has confirmed a settlement agreement between the National Consumer Commission (NCC) and peanut butter manufacturer House of Natural Butters (Pty) Ltd, trading as Eden All Butters, in which the supplier agreed to pay an administrative penalty of R500,000. This follows a product safety investigation launched after several peanut butter products were found to contain high levels of aflatoxin, a toxic substance produced by certain moulds. According to the NCC, the supplier and the commission entered into the settlement agreement on February 25, 2025, which was subsequently referred to the Tribunal. On 3 June 2025, the Tribunal confirmed the agreement and made it a consent order in terms of section 74(1) of the Consumer Protection Act (CPA). The NCC said it had first been alerted to the issue in February 2024 through product recall notifications issued by Dischem and Pick 'n Pay. These recalls were prompted by elevated levels of aflatoxin in certain peanut butter products supplied by House of Natural Butters. 'The NCC established that the affected products had higher than legally acceptable levels of aflatoxin, as set out under R1145 Regulation Governing Tolerance of Fungus-Produced Toxins in Foodstuffs,' the commission had stated. Following discussions with the manufacturer, it emerged that House of Natural Butters also produced items for other suppliers. In confirming the consent order, the Tribunal noted: 'The respondent imported the products from Malawi and Zambia using trucks and trailers, via land borders and port entries. The trucks and trailers did not have the requisite certificates of acceptability required for the transportation of food. Further laboratory test results from various accredited food testing laboratories established that the products were contaminated, decayed and impure.' The matter involving another peanut butter manufacturer implicated in the case is still ongoing. Acting Commissioner of the NCC, Hardin Ratshisusu, welcomed the outcome in the House of Natural Butters matter. 'The NCC welcomes this consent order as it brings this matter against House of Natural Butters to a finality. Musk deletes X posts accusing Trump of Epstein ties
Billionaire Elon Musk deleted several X posts linking former US President Donald Trump to Jeffrey Epstein, just days after criticising him over a congressional bill. On Thursday 5 June, Musk posted without providing evidence that the US Department of Justice had not released Epstein's files because they allegedly implicated Trump. 'Time to drop the really big bomb: @realDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files,' Musk wrote. 'That is the real reason they have not been made public. Have a nice day, DJT!' Musk deleted that post, along with others repeating the claim. The link now shows the message: 'Nothing to see here.' In another now-deleted post from Friday night, Musk said he would apologise to Trump 'as soon as there is a full dump of the Epstein files.' He also deleted a repost in which an X user called for Trump's impeachment and suggested replacing him with Vice President JD Vance. Musk had responded 'Yes' to the suggestion, appearing to endorse it. It remains unclear when the deleted posts were removed. As of today Musk has not retracted the accusations publicly, nor provided evidence to support them.
