Red Sox reactions: Offense wastes Lucas Giolito's gem
BOSTON — Instant reactions from the Red Sox' 2-1 loss to Baltimore Orioles in Game 2 of a doubleheader Saturday at Fenway Park:
1) Red Sox (27-27) won the first game of the doubleheader 6-5 in 10 innings on Rafael Devers' fifth career walkoff RBI. They lead the four-game series 2-1 heading into Sunday's finale.

2) Boston designated lefty Sean Newcomb for assignment and recalled hard-throwing righty Luis Guerrero from Triple-A Worcester right before Game 2. Guerrero replaced lefty Brennan Bernardino with two outs in the eighth and a runner at first base. He walked Adley Rutschman, then gave up an RBI single to Ryan O'Hearn that made it 1-0 Orioles.
3) Guerrero allowed another run in the ninth inning on two walks and Dylan Carson's RBI single that put Baltimore ahead 2-0.
4) Righty Lucas Giolito has made five starts this season and he has pitched well in every other start. He pitched well in his season debut (6 innings, three runs at Toronto), bad in his second start (3 ⅔ innings, six runs vs. Texas), really well in his third start (6 ⅔ innings, one run at KC) and bad in his fourth start (4 innings, 6 runs vs. Atlanta).
It was his turn to pitch well again Saturday and he did. He pitched really well. He tossed 7 scoreless innings, allowing just six hits and two walks while striking out six. He threw 99 pitches (63 for strikes). He got nine swings and misses, including five with his four-seam fastball, two with his slider and two with his changeup.

5) No. 2 Red Sox prospect Marcelo Mayer was promoted between Games 1 and 2 of the doubleheader and made his MLB debut in the nightcap. He batted sixth and played third base. He shifted over to shortstop in the eighth inning after shortstop Trevor Story was removed in the seventh for a pinch hitter. He went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts.
6) The Red Sox squandered a big chance in the eighth. With Boston down 1-0, Nick Sogard led off the inning with a single to right field against O's reliever Andrew Kittredge. David Hamilton pinch ran for Sogard and stole second base. Kittredge then walked Connor Wong, a .149 hitters, on four pitches. But he got Ceddanne Rafaela to fly out to shallow right field without the base runners advancing.
Righty Seranthony Domínguez took over for Kittredge. He got Jarren Duran to strike out swinging on an 86.9 mph splitter and Rafael Devers to pop out to first baseman Ryan O'Hearn on the first pitch of his at-bat.
7) Abraham Toro led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a 386-foot home run just out of the reach of center fielder Jorge Mateo who flipped over the wall into the Red Sox bullpen going after it. It was Toro's second homer of the day and cut the deficit to 2-1.

Wilyer Abreu singled with one out. But rookie Marcelo Mayer grounded into a force out and David Hamilton
8) Orioles lefty starter Trevor Rogers, a 2021 NL All-Star with Miami, made his season debut. He began this year on the IL with a right knee subluxation before getting optioned to Triple-A Norfolk on May 11. He left with the game scoreless and two men on base with one out in the seventh inning. Righty Andrew Kittredge replaced him and got pinch hitter Wilyer Abreu to ground out to second base and Mayer to strike out swinging on a slider below the strike zone.
9) The Red Sox and Orioles will play the final game of their four-game series Sunday at 1:35 p.m. Red Sox righty Walker Buehler (4-1, 4.00 ERA) is scheduled to start opposite righty Dean Kremer (3-5, 5.50 ERA).

Midwest Spotlight: Four biggest June recruiting visits
June has become arguably the most important month in the recruiting calendar, with prospects crisscrossing the country on official visits and lining up announcement dates. Rivals national recruiting analyst Greg Smith looks at four Midwest prospects who are taking key visits this month. Advertisement THIS SERIES: Five biggest Southeast visits in June CLASS OF 2026 RANKINGS: Rivals250 | Team | Position | State CLASS OF 2027 RANKINGS: Rivals250 | Team | Position | State TRANSFER PORTAL: Full coverage | Player ranking | Team ranking | Transfer search | Transfer Tracker RIVALS CAMP SERIES: Rivals Five-Star heading back to Indy | Rivals Five-Star roster | Schedule/info MCHALE BLADE - Notre Dame, June 20 Blade is one of the top uncommitted defensive linemen in the country. He's already taken officials to Purdue and Wisconsin with the Badgers making a major move in his recruitment. He'll also take an official visit to Michigan and USC. Advertisement But the one I'm watching closest is the visit to Notre Dame. The Irish have long been the favorites in this recruitment. They'll get the final visit and the chance to shut down his recruitment. SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH NOTRE DAME FANS AT CINCERE JOHNSON - Ohio State, June 13 Johnson plays for Glenville in Cleveland which has produced many Buckeyes over the years. Penn State and Alabama have made impressions on the linebacker but it's still hard to see him turning down the in-state Buckeyes. Coach Ryan Day and company will get the final visit just days before his June 19 announcement date. Advertisement The Nittany Lions and Tide have closed the gap ahead of that visit to Columbus. Can Ohio State finish this one off later this month? SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH OHIO STATE FANS AT CJ SADLER - Miami, June 13 Sadler's recruitment has been a real wild card this cycle. For a long time it seemed like he was a lock to end up in Ann Arbor and play for Michigan. Now I'm not so sure about that. In a move that surprised many, he took an official visit to Maryland and the Terps impressed during that trip. He'll also take an official to North Carolina (June 6) and Colorado (June 20). But it's the Miami visit that could move the needle most. The Hurricanes are always dangerous on the recruiting trail, led by coach Mario Cristobal. Combine that with the renewed NIL juice and general excitement about the direction of the program and it's a powerful punch. Advertisement Michigan and Michigan State are still lurking here, but that Miami visit on June 13 is very interesting. SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH MIAMI FANS AT MACK SUTTER - Alabama, June 20 The Crimson Tide entered the official visit season as the favorites for the Illinois four-star tight end. Coach Kalen DeBoer and his staff have to wait until the end of June to get him on campus while he completes his other trips. Illinois, Ole Miss and Ohio State have already hosted Sutter and Penn State will get its shot on June 6. But Alabama has the final visit. Sutter loves the idea of playing for the SEC power and has a great relationship with the staff. My FutureCast is riding on the Tide to get this done and this visit will be a big one. Red Sox Blockbuster Trade Idea Cuts Ties With Rafael Devers for MLB's No. 5 Prospect
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The Boston Red Sox are nine games back of the New York Yankees for the American League East lead and four games out of the final Wild Card spot. While they are not sellers yet, they could be by the time the July 31 deadline rolls around. The Red Sox season has been highlighted by injuries and drama. One of the biggest storylines has been Rafael Devers' position. He was moved off of third base when the team signed Alex Bregman. When Triston Casas went down, he was reportedly asked by Craig Breslow to play first base, which upset him and led to a rant in the media. Now, with Alex Bregman hurt, the team does not seem interested in letting him play third base, making for a messy situation. Compound that with the fact that the team is not playing well, and the team could be ready to move on from Devers and embrace a youth movement. The Red Sox are already relying on contributions from young players like Ceddanne Rafaela, Marcelo Mayer, Wilyer Abreu and Kristian Campbell. FanSided's Christopher Kline suggested the Red Sox trade Devers to the Philadelphia Phillies to add another young star, Andrew Painter, MLB Pipeline's No. 5 prospect, to their young core. BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS - MAY 08: Rafael Devers #11 of the Boston Red Sox looks on after hitting a one-run home run in the seventh inning against the Texas Rangers at Fenway Park on May 08,... BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS - MAY 08: Rafael Devers #11 of the Boston Red Sox looks on after hitting a one-run home run in the seventh inning against the Texas Rangers at Fenway Park on May 08, 2025 in Boston, Massachusetts. More"While Devers' production is smoothing over negative feelings in the fanbase, there is palpable tension with the front office," wrote Kline. "Boston is under no pressure to rush the 28-year-old out the door, as he's under contract through 2033, but now might be a good time to cut bait on a negative defender with a hefty salary number through his age-36 season. The Phillies stomach major long-term commitments better than most franchises, and there's an open slot at third base if Philadelphia decides to reroute Alec Bohm, which could return Devers to his position of choice." Trading Devers would come as a huge shock, and the Red Sox would have to practically be eliminated from the postseason to even consider it. However, trading Devers for a package centered around Painter could set up the Red Sox for years of success. The Red Sox already have an ace in Garrett Crochet. Adding Painter would help them solve their woes around their ace. Additionally, opening up the DH spot would finally give the team a way to get Roman Anthoy, the top prospect in baseball, into the big leagues. Essentially, the Phillies would be parting ways with Devers to then go into next season with Crochet, Campbell, Mayer, Anthony, Abreu, Jarren Duran and Painter as the pillars of their team. Meanwhile, the Phillies would be capitalizing on their opportunity to win now, before they potentially lose Kyle Schwarber and J.T. Realmuto in free agency. Painter is not going to help them win this season, most likely, but Devers would. It would also allow them to flip Alec Bohm for some outfield help. New York Rangers expected to hire David Quinn, Joe Sacco, Ty Hennes as assistant coaches
David Quinn, Joe Sacco and Ty Hennes are all expected to join the New York Rangers staff as assistant coaches under new coach Mike Sullivan, a league source told The Athletic. The Rangers were able to name their assistants when Boston (Marco Sturm) and Pittsburgh (Dan Muse) announced new head coaches this week, taking all three names out of consideration. Quinn and Sacco are both former NHL head coaches. Advertisement The Quinn hire marks a reunion. He was the Rangers' head coach from 2018-19 to 2020-21, compiling a 96-87-25 record. General manager Chris Drury fired Quinn shortly taking over as team president. The 58-year-old coached the San Jose Sharks for two seasons and was one of Sullivan's assistants this past season in Pittsburgh. He'll likely help run the power play in New York. Joe Sacco spent most of last season as Boston's interim head coach after the Bruins fired Jim Montgomery. Before taking over for Montgomery, he spent nine seasons as an assistant coach for the Bruins. He worked closely with the team's penalty kill in Boston and got within one win of getting his name on the Stanley Cup in 2019. He was also the head coach of the Colorado Avalanche for four seasons. Sullivan, Quinn and Sacco were college teammates at Boston University, though Quinn did not appear in any games the year all three overlapped, as he had been diagnosed with a rare disorder that prevented blood from clotting properly. He was still co-captain of the team. Hennes has been under Sullivan his whole NHL coaching career. He started with the Penguins as a skills and skating coach in 2018-19, then moved up to an assistant role in 2022. Sullivan had already retained goaltending coach Jeff Malcolm and skills coach Christian Hmura, both of whom were on Peter Laviolette's Rangers staff last season. Muse, one of Laviolette's assistants, got the Pittsburgh job, and Michael Peca, another Laviolette assistant, went to Chicago. Both Muse and Peca had the opportunity to interview to remain as Rangers assistants after Laviolette's firing, The Athletic previously reported.
