Experts eye the future at Canada's largest hydrogen convention in Edmonton
The world of hydrogen landed for the fourth time in Edmonton this week, but attendees who've been around since the beginning say the conversations in just four year have already shifted from how people could use the technology to how they could use it sooner.
The 2025 Canadian Hydrogen Convention kicked off in Edmonton on Wednesday. With roughly 10,000 attendees, the buzz around the industry at the event is palpable. Here's what you need to know about the conference and what it means for Alberta and Canada.
For the first few years of the convention, the conversations about hydrogen looked at the future, but this year seemed to mark a change to the present. The future is here now.
As executive director for the Industrial Heartland Association, Mark Plamondon pointed out while moderating the export outlook panel there was once a time when the organizers couldn't fill a panel about exporting hydrogen because the industry was still concerned with more immediate questions of innovation and building out infrastructure to develop demand.
'We've come a long way in four years,' said Robert A. Booker, CEO of Trigon Pacific Terminals Ltd., who was on the convention's first export panel.
While Canada and Alberta have access to significant quantities of hydrogen, both lack the adequate infrastructure necessary to help take the next step in further developing a hydrogen industry, which in this case means port access using rail, which still needs to be built out.
'The better time to build it was yesterday,' said Patrick McKenna, vice-president of large project development with Linde.
With an election coming next week and several months of tariff struggles with the United States, hydrogen experts said both are likely to have an effect on the industry going forward, which could be good news.
'I think each government will have a different approach. And I think more importantly, not who the federal government is, but is it a majority or minority, and how quickly can we move? Because at least on the Asian side, urgency is key,' said James Vultaggio, vice-president of commercial and business development with Atco EnPower.
With the political environment in flux in Canada, the country's energy future remains up in the air, which can be a deterrent for external investment. On one hand, investors want to see consistent support for the industry. On another hand, investors want to see firm commitment and speed in building out the necessary infrastructure to allow Canada to take the next step towards hydrogen.
Although domestic politics have slowed Canada's growth as a hydrogen-exporting country, international turmoil with the U.S. could actually help it.
'I think it creates a lot of positive tailwinds,' said Matthew Borys, vice-president of corporate development with EverWind Fuels.
'The administration to the south now is focused a little bit more on fossil fuel production, reducing environmental regulations. And to be frank, if they want to cede their seat as a clean energy leader, I think Canada has an opportunity to fill that seat, and we should take it, or at a minimum, advance our clean energy sectors here at home.'
With increasing electrification of a variety of goods, spanning from personal transportation to massive data centres, the increasing demand for electricity is a foregone conclusion. However, Atco expects hydrogen and ammonia to be part of that growing demand.
'We all agree that energy demand is going to continue to grow, and we at Atco believe that hydrogen ammonia will remain a key part of that supply mix, especially in delivery to Asia. Right now, we see a current forecast that Asian demand for ammonia is going to grow by over 400 per cent towards the end of the decade,' said Vultaggio.
The demand is similarly growing on the European front.
In building towards its national management strategy, Dr. Christine Falken-Grosser , who is a director with the hydrogen co-ordination federal ministry of economic affairs and climate action in Germany, said their own demand could reach as high as 18 million tonnes per year within the next decade.
While policy and procedure continues to get hammered out to develop the market for hydrogen, investing in the technology can streamline the industry's growth.
Speaking on the future of hydrogen powering data centres panel, Gregory Vezina, CEO of Hydrofuel Canada, called for better investment.
'We do not invest in basic science in this country like we should,' Vezina said. 'My advice is throw 10 per cent of your revenue or your investment into R and D in product development.
'Don't enrich shareholders. Enrich society. Your company will be better. And guess what? So will your shareholders. That's my advice. Take the longer view and take the real risks that have to be taken to make the big changes.'
Following Vezina's impassioned plea, University of Alberta president Bill Flanagan announced the founding of its new Centre for Hydrogen Innovation, Workforce, Development and Outreach, which will be led by Professor Amit Kumar.

Black organizations, some founded in the 1800s, still exist. Are they still needed?
Black organizations, some founded in the 1800s, still exist. Are they still needed? Show Caption Hide Caption Historically black colleges key to the election For decades, historically black colleges and universities - or HBCUs - have played a prominent role in elections. This year is proving no different. Many Black organizations were founded in the 1800s, some even before the end of slavery. Historically Black colleges and universities are one example. But there are many others. Are they still needed today? Civil rights leaders and experts explain. WASHINGTON ‒ Enslaved Black people were banned from reading and writing and even those who had their freedom couldn't always access formal schooling, so African Americans began founding colleges of their own. 'Black organizations exist because we were locked out of mainstream White organizations,'' said Marc Morial, president of the National Urban League, a civil rights organization. 'And even today we remain locked out of the leadership.' Hispanic, Asian, Jewish and other groups exist for similar reasons. With the Trump administration's efforts to eliminate diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives across federal agencies, in the private sector and at higher education institutions, such affinity organizations have been the focus of more attention with some public officials and others questioning why they exist. Morial said those questions are precisely why such groups are still needed. 'This period is showing us why these organizations are relevant,'' he said. Diversity efforts unnecessary, adminstration says Following Trump's lead, a number of administration officials have slammed efforts to celebrate diversity and have eliminated nearly all of the government-funded positions that promoted it. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told staff in January they couldn't use official resources to host events related to cultural awareness months, including Black History Month, Women's History Month and National Disability Employment Awareness Month. Hegseth also set up a task force to abolish DEI offices. "I think the single dumbest phrase in military history is 'Our diversity is our strength,' " Hegseth said at a townhall at the Pentagon in February. Jonathan Butcher, a senior fellow at the conservative Heritage Foundation, said mandatory affinity groups in public settings such as schools are inappropriate. He said those groups are segregating students by race for a lecture or topic. He pointed to Wellesley Public School district in Massachusetts which was sued for creating racial affinity groups. The district settled in 2022, saying the groups are open to all students. 'When you couch having a conversation about issues related to race and dividing the students according to ethnicity in order to have such programming, I find that to be highly inappropriate,'' Butcher said. 'That is what a part of the Civil Rights Act was meant to prevent.' Butcher said, however, groups whose memberships are voluntary like the Congressional Black Caucus don't break the law. 'It is an opportunity for those members to represent what they believe are the interests of constituents who share their race or ethnicity," he said. Butcher called it a unique American experience to form such groups as long as they're not exclusionary. 'If there are people, regardless of the skin color, who share the same interests, there shouldn't be a reason that they would be excluded from such a group,'' he said. 'A space where you're comfortable' Historically, African Americans and other people of color and faith, including Jewish people, were often denied access to White places of worship, professional associations, brotherhood organizations and schools, said Roger Davidson, Jr., associate professor of history at Bowie State University, a historically Black school in Maryland. He noted for example that the African Methodist Episcopal Church was created when the Methodist Episcopal Church discriminated against Black worshippers. And some students of color who attended predominately White colleges formed or joined groups like Black student unions to bond and unite around issues, Davidson said. 'Sometimes you have to have a space where you're comfortable,'' he said. 'Because though you may say you can go join other spaces, you may not be made welcome.'' Many historically Black colleges and Universities, or HBCUs, were created in the early to mid 1800's, some in the wake of hundreds of years of slavery and a period when Black people could be killed for trying to read or write. 'They were created as an act of social justice in response to the reality of our people that education did in fact matter,'' said Cynthia Neal Spence, an associate professor of sociology at Spelman College, a historically Black school in Atlanta. Some students were direct descendants of people who had been enslaved. Spence also pointed to other groups like the Congressional Black Caucus, which was formed in 1971 by 13 Black lawmakers. 'These individuals united because even though they had gone through the electoral process and they were inhabiting the halls of Congress … their ideas were not being valued," Spence said. 'They were being dismissed by some ‒ not all ‒ but by some members of Congress who did not believe that they belonged.' She and others said for some members of affinity groups there is strength in numbers where they can be a powerful voting bloc or special interest group. 'Part of it is how do we also make certain that the issues that are of particular attention to our communities remain in the center and not on the margin," Spence said. More: HBCUs are celebrating Trump's recent order. What will it change? Juan Proaño, CEO of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), said his civil rights organization was founded because of discrimination in the South and Southwest against Mexican Americans and to battle voting rights issues, such as poll taxes and English-only ballots. 'The purpose, obviously, is to bring together the collective interest, the political power, the economic influence of any group or any intersectional group to advocate on behalf of the community as a whole,'' he said. Proaño noted that many legacy organizations like LULAC and the NAACP worked together in the 1950s and 1960s during the Civil Rights Movement and later in the 1970s over such issues. 'That's really when those organizations started to explode,'' he said, noting the Chicano Movement and the Black Panthers. 'They were powerful movements, generational movements.'' 'The problems still exist' Lately, even the existence of some voluntary affinity groups has triggered backlash. Leaders of some affinity organizations said the anti-DEI efforts have only bolstered the case for why their groups are still needed. They point to efforts to push back against negative and stereotypical rhetoric about immigrants of color. 'People unite around like issues, like experiences,'' Spence said. 'But when we do it … it's as if we're somewhere trying to plot the revolution ‒ and that's not what we're doing. We're just seeking like mindedness.' More: Trump's early agenda dismantles Civil Rights Act, advances Project 2025, activists say More: Lawmakers push bipartisan bill to put the American Latino museum on the National Mall. 'This year is a reminder that organizations like LULAC are probably more important than ever,'' Proaño said. 'In a way you could say that we're still fighting a lot of the same fights that we were fighting in 1929, period.'' Davidson agreed. 'The NAACP, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, still exists because the problems still exist,'' he said. 'HBCUs still exist because partially the problem still exists … You shut them down, you're shutting down opportunities for a lot of people. ''

Vista Unveils Ultra-High-Net-Worth Travel Trends: Singapore Ascends as Southeast Asia's Premier Destination Vista Unveils Ultra-High-Net-Worth Travel Trends: Singapore Ascends as Southeast Asia's Premier DestinationPress images available for download here. Singapore, Thursday 19 June 2025 – Vista, the world's leading private aviation group and parent company of VistaJet and XO, hosted a panel discussion on Ultra-High-Net-Worth Trends in Singapore, bringing together influential voices from across its partner network within the city's luxury ecosystem. The invitation-only event explored the evolving trends of luxury among Southeast Asia's ultra-high-net-worth-individuals (UHNWIs) whose lifestyle choices are increasingly driven by meaning, mobility, and long-term value. Held against the backdrop of rising demand for premium experiences and increased regional UHNWI mobility, the panel featured insights from: Amy Yang, Vice President, Marketing – APAC & IMEA, Vista Christine Li, Head of Research Asia Pacific, Knight Frank Ewa Stachurska, Chief Marketing & Sustainability Officer, Sanlorenzo Asia Pacific The speakers examined the burgeoning demand for private aviation, luxury real estate, and superyachts which highlight Singapore's status as a premier destination and how brands are responding to the rising desire for privacy and personalization. Vista's Amy Yang shared, 'With the rising trend of bleisure travel — where business and leisure are seamlessly intertwined — Singapore has consistently ranked among the top destinations for Vista's clientele. Its unique blend of Asian cultures and its status as an international business hub make it an ideal gateway for today's global travelers. At a time where excellence standards and consistency are paramount — whether flying long-haul between Asia and the United States aboard the industry-leading Global 7500 or regionally within Europe or the Middle East on the popular super-mid-size fleet — Vista is uniquely positioned to meet this growing demand with a global infrastructure that spans 96% of the world.' In 2024, VistaJet further saw a 10% growth in its Memberships in Southeast Asia, whereas XO — Vista's instantaneous and real-time priced private jet marketplace — saw doubled flight traffic year-on-year growth in Singapore. Knight Frank's Christine Li reveals: "According to The Wealth Report 2025, Asia Pacific is predicted to account for 47.5% of the global UHNW population created between 2025-2028. The inaugural Family Office survey displays an increasing trend to view prime real estate as an attractive combination of steady income generation and capital growth potential. Confidence in Singapore's prime assets are underscored by the significant UHNWI commercial property transactions for 2024/2025 — notably US$520 million for the 21 Collyer Quay office building and US$43 million for River Valley Apartments enbloc. This blend of strategic diversification, expectations for long-term asset appreciation, and sustained high-value investment activity, solidifies Singapore's position as a premier destination for sophisticated capital.' Sanlorenzo Asia Pacific's Ewa Stachurska adds: 'Singapore is emerging as a premier yachting hub with 8 boat clubs and marinas and 4000 boats and yachts stationed in the city. Coupled with Southeast Asia's extensive coastlines that are easily accessible by yachts with adequate range and storage capacity, this creates a unique environment for the rising demand of highly customized superyachts. This trend reflects a broader shift towards exceptional purchases that offer not only immediate enjoyment but also generational significance, and purpose underscoring the evolving aspirations of Asia's affluent clientele. Sanlorenzo Asia Pacific prioritizes intimate activations and experiences with like-minded yacht owners at the Sanlorenzo Elite community, ensuring the holistic customer journey is complete in discreet elegance and effortless style.' Singapore: Rising Capital of Premier Experiences With its concentration of wealth, political stability and service excellence, Singapore is emerging as Southeast Asia's main hub for luxury experiences and financial conferences. This is evidenced by the three-digit growth figures in Vista's flight traffic during key event periods. In comparison with the daily average of flight traffic in Singapore across 2024, a tremendous 362% increase was seen during the Taylor Swift Eras tour in Singapore due to the fact that this was the singer's sole stop in Southeast Asia for her global concert. The Singapore Grand Prix also instigated a 168% surge in daily average flight traffic while it coincided with other major financial events in the city, such as The Milken Institute Asia Summit and Global Trade Review Congress and more. On the other hand, the Singapore Yachting Festival supported a 46% higher business jet traffic as compared to the daily average for the year. Southeast Asia's Emerging Luxury Destinations While Singapore remains the anchor of Southeast Asia's luxury ecosystem, Vista shared the hidden gems amongst its exclusive flight destinations in 2024, locations that fuse nature, culture and exclusivity. Kuching, Malaysia — the international gateway to Borneo attracts luxury eco-tourists keen to explore the island's ancient rainforests and orangutan sanctuaries. Da Nang, Vietnam — a coastal city gaining traction for its resort offerings, vibrant culinary scene and proximity to UNESCO sites. Sorong, Indonesia — the preferred entry point to Raja Ampat, offering access to one of the world's most pristine and remote marine reserves. Meanwhile, established favourites such as the Maldives, Phuket and Bali continue to see robust traffic, with Phuket in particular benefitting from global pop culture visibility, most notably through HBO's The White Lotus, which set its third season in Thailand. According to Knight Frank, Manila has emerged as the world's fastest-growing market for prime residential prices in 2024. In Malaysia, government incentives have further strengthened the residential property sector, making it an attractive option for those seeking both personal homes and long-term value appreciation. Meanwhile, foreign buyers continue to shape Bangkok's prime real estate landscape, with Chinese investors at the forefront of this growing demand. Based on the findings from Sanlorenzo Asia Pacific, the superyacht market in Singapore and Southeast Asia is experiencing dynamic growth, driven by a rapidly expanding population of ultra-high-net-worth individuals who increasingly seek passion assets that combine lifestyle, legacy, and long-term value. Unlike traditional markets, wealth in the region is largely newly created and is now being passed on to a younger generation that prioritizes experiential discreet luxury and family-oriented investments. Aligned with trends in yachting and luxury real estate, private and exclusive travel experiences are increasingly sought after by Vista Members. With access to the most prestigious establishments through its global network of over 600 partners across 35 categories — from private island villas to yachting services, fine art to automobiles — Vista's Private World offers bespoke journeys and itineraries tailored to each client's passions. At Vista, meeting the demands of UHNWIs extends far beyond the cabin — it encompasses every aspect of in Member's life, before they step onboard, and long after they land. – ENDS – InformationVista | press@ About Vista Vista Global Holding's (Vista) subsidiaries provide worldwide business flight services.
