Ukraine facing fierce fighting around eastern city of Pokrovsk, Zelenskiy says
(Reuters) -President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Friday that Ukrainian forces were facing fierce fighting around the city of Pokrovsk in the east, a logistics hub near which Russia has been announcing the capture of villages on an almost daily basis.
Zelenskiy, speaking in his nightly video address, said Ukraine's top commander, Oleksandr Syrskyi, told a meeting of senior officials that the situation around Pokrovsk was the current focal point of its attention in the war, which began when Russia invaded in February 2022.
"All operational directions were covered, with particular focus on Pokrovsk. It receives the most attention," Zelenskiy said.
Ukrainian forces, he said, were also "continuing to act" in border areas in the northern Sumy region, where Russian troops have gained a foothold in recent weeks.
Syrskyi, in a separate report on the Telegram messaging app, described Pokrovsk and five other sectors as among the most difficult theatres along the 1,000-km (620-mile) front.
"The Russian Federation is paying the maximum price for attempting a 'summer offensive,'" Syrskyi wrote.
Russian forces have for months been trying to close in on Pokrovsk, a road and rail hub whose pre-war population of about 60,000 has been all but evacuated.
Syrskyi in May reported that Kyiv's troops had stabilised the situation around the town, also the site of the only colliery in Ukraine producing coking coal for the country's steel industry.
Russia's Defence Ministry on Thursday announced the capture of two villages on either side of Pokrovsk -- Zvirove to the west and Novoekonomichne to the east. A third village near the city -- Novotoretske -- was declared by Moscow to be "liberated" earlier in the week.
Ukrainian officials have made no acknowledgement that the villages have changed hands. The General Staff of Ukraine's military said in an evening report that two of them -- Zvirove and Novoekonomichne - were in areas where Russian troops were trying to penetrate Ukrainian defences.
In Sumy region, where Russian troops are trying to establish what Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin calls a "buffer zone", the popular Ukrainian military blog DeepState said Kyiv's forces had retaken a previously lost village.
DeepState, which relies on open source reports to track the presence of Russian forces, said Ukrainian troops had restored control over the village of Kindrativka. There was no official comment from either side.

Rubio says US officials in Malaysia to help in Cambodia-Thailand talks
WASHINGTON: U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio ( pic ) said State Department officials are in Malaysia to assist peace efforts as Cambodia and Thailand were scheduled to begin talks there on Monday in hopes for a ceasefire. President Donald Trump and Rubio were engaged with their counterparts for each country and were monitoring the situation very closely, Rubio said in a statement released by the State Department late on Sunday in the U.S. and early Monday (July 28) in Asia. "We want this conflict to end as soon as possible," he said. "State Department officials are on the ground in Malaysia to assist these peace efforts." The leaders of Thailand and Cambodia were scheduled to attend mediation talks over their deadly border conflict in Malaysia on Monday, the Thai government said, as both sides accused each other of launching fresh artillery strikes across contested areas. Tensions between Thailand and Cambodia have intensified since the late-May killing of a Cambodian soldier during a brief border skirmish. Border troops on both sides were reinforced amid a full-blown diplomatic crisis that brought Thailand's fragile coalition government to the brink of collapse. Hostilities resumed on Thursday and, within just four days, escalated into the worst fighting between the Southeast Asian neighbors in more than a decade. The death toll has risen above 30, including 13 civilians in Thailand and eight in Cambodia, while authorities report that more than 200,000 people have been evacuated from border areas. Ministry approves new site for 188-year-old Sung Siew

SANDAKAN: The Education Ministry approved the relocation of the 118-year-old Sekolah Menengah Sung Siew here to a new 25-acre site at Batu 4 near Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan Sung Siew. The approval letter was handed over during a ceremony at the school on Saturday, witnessed by Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh during his official working visit here. Also present were Sandakan MP Vivian Wong Shir Yee, Sandakan District Education Officer Roslin Siabok, school principal Kwok Chee Yen, SM Sung Siew School Board Chairman Vun Soon Chong and representatives from the Sabah Education Department and alumni. The Ministry granted the approval on June 25, following a request submitted four years ago by the school, Sandakan District Education Office and Sabah Education Department. Kah Woh hopes the relocation approval would expedite the construction process. The current school, built on 2.24 acres owned by the Basel Christian Church Malaysia, would move to the new site at Batu 4, where Sung Siew's primary and preschool sections have already been operating for several years after relocating there. 'Over 80 per cent of students live near Batu 4 residential areas which was a key factor in the decision. Our priority is to provide the best educational access for all students here,' he said. Meanwhile, Vun Soon Chong thanked the Ministry, the Sabah Education Department and the District Education Office for the approval, adding that the school board, parents and staff had been actively fundraising for the new campus through charity events and marathons. Earlier, Kah Woh visited SK Sri Tanjung Papat I and SK Sri Tanjung Papat II in Kampung Sim-Sim, which currently share premises after the latter was destroyed by tidal waves in 2018. Following discussions with parents, the Ministry would seek a new site for SK Sri Tanjung Papat II to accommodate the growing number of students. The Deputy Minister also inspected SK St Mary Town and SK St Mary Labuk, where the Ministry has allocated RM185,000 for upgrading works, including a new canteen.
