India Omarzai stars as IPL resumes with Punjab edging Rajasthan
Afghanistan's Azmatullah Omarzai marked the IPL's restart with a strong all-round display as Punjab Kings beat Rajasthan Royals by 10 runs on Sunday, moving closer to a playoff berth.
This was the first completed match since the tournament was paused due to the India-Pakistan conflict. Saturday's game was washed out, but conditions improved in Jaipur, where Punjab posted 219-5 after electing to bat.
Nehal Wadhera top-scored with 70 off 37, supported by Shreyas Iyer (30) and an unbeaten 59 from Shashank Singh. Omarzai added a quick 21* off 9 balls, and later took two key wickets. Punjab had earlier slumped to 34-3, with debutant Mitch Owen out for a two-ball duck, but Wadhera and Shashank revived the innings with aggressive strokeplay in 42°C heat.
In reply, Rajasthan started strong, reaching 89-1 in six overs. Yashasvi Jaiswal smashed 50 off 25, and 14-year-old Suryavanshi Vaibhav Suryavanshi hit 40 off 15. However, spin halted their momentum as Harpreet Brar (3-22) removed both openers.
Captain Sanju Samson (20) and Shimron Hetmyer (11) also fell, both to Omarzai. Dhruv Jurel fought back with a 31-ball 53, but was dismissed by Marco Jansen in the final over as Rajasthan finished on 209-7.
Punjab now sit second in the 10-team table, tied on 17 points with leaders Royal Challengers Bengaluru. The IPL final, originally delayed due to the conflict, is now scheduled for June 3.

India seeks to ban online gambling

India's government introduced a parliamentary bill yesterday to ban online gambling, citing concerns over addiction, financial harm, and potential links to money laundering and terrorism financing. The move could threaten a multi-billion dollar industry that includes online poker platforms to fantasy sports, as well as India's wildly popular homegrown fantasy cricket apps -- some of which sponsor the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the national team. The bill, tabled in the lower house of the parliament, aims to stop websites or apps from offering games that are 'played by a user paying fees or depositing money or other stakes', with the expectation of winning money. If passed, the law would impose jail terms or fines on individuals and companies offering online money gaming services. The bill proposes prison sentences or fines, saying the ban is needed due to the social and financial harm that online money games have on young players. Lawmakers said the ban was needed due to the industry's 'unchecked expansion', which the bill said had been linked to 'financial fraud, money laundering... and in some cases, the financing of terrorism'. The legislation also pointed to the social and financial risks for young players. Industry bodies have strongly opposed the move, warning it could devastate a sector that has drawn major foreign investment. The All India Gaming Federation and the Federation of Indian Fantasy Sports said on Tuesday that shutting 'responsible' Indian platforms would push millions of players toward offshore gambling sites and unregulated operators. 'Instead of protecting people, this bill risks exposing them to fraud, exploitation and unsafe practices,' they said in a letter.

Atletico beaten by Espanyol in La Liga opener

AFP | Madrid Espanyol staged a late comeback to grab a shock 2-1 win over Atletico Madrid on Sunday as Diego Simeone's men made a disappointing start to their La Liga campaign. Pere Milla scored a late winner as Atletico stumbled to defeat in Barcelona despite leading through Julian Alvarez's brilliant goal. Atletico have been busy in the transfer market, with notable arrivals including Alex Baena, David Hancko, Johnny Cardoso and Giacomo Raspadori, in a bid to challenge Barcelona and Real Madrid for the title. Angel Correa, Rodrigo De Paul and Cesar Azpilicueta have all departed as part of the rebuild after Simeone's team finished third, 12 points behind champions Barca last term. Barcelona kicked off their title defence with a 3-0 win at Mallorca on Saturday, while Real Madrid host Osasuna on Tuesday. Slovakia centre - back Hancko had the best chance of a cagey opening half-hour for Atletico but could only head straight at Espanyol goalkeeper Marko Dmitrovic. The visitors forged ahead in spectacular fashion in the 37th minute, though, as Alvarez curled a free-kick into the top corner, well beyond the dive of Dmitrovic. Alvarez went close to doubling Atletico's lead just before the hour mark when he crashed a shot against the post.

PSG get Ligue 1 title defence off to winning start

AFP | Paris Paris Saint-Germain got their defence of the Ligue 1 title off to a winning start on Sunday as Vitinha's deflected strike proved enough to earn the European champions a 1-0 victory away to Nantes. The Portuguese midfielder's effort midway through the second half beat goalkeeper Anthony Lopes with the aid of a wicked deflection off Nantes defender Chidozie Awaziem to break the deadlock. PSG were made to work hard for their victory as coach Luis Enrique made seven changes to his starting line-up following the UEFA Super Cup win on penalties against Tottenham Hotspur in midweek. That was the first game of the new campaign for last season's Champions League winners, who only began pre-season training on August 6 having gone all the way to the Club World Cup final in the United States in mid-July. They did not play any friendly matches prior to that and are therefore likely to require several weeks before getting close to the level at which they performed last season. However, they still had enough against a hard-working but punchless Nantes side, playing a first competitive match under new Portuguese coach Luis Castro. 'I am very happy because the first objective in these matches is the victory and I think we deserved the three points,' Luis Enrique said. 'We were in control throughout, playing away from home. In the first half we didn't create much but that is normal because it is difficult against a team defending so deep.' Asked about his team's lack of preparation for the start of the new season, the Spanish coach added: 'Today we saw that our players are ready and wanted to show the level they can perform at. 'They all need time which I think is normal but we will look more comfortable with the ball once we have a few more games under our belts.'
