HC seeks govt reply on nods for resort in proposed tiger park
The high court of Bombay at Goa on Tuesday called for a response from central and state authorities in a petition challenging permissions, approvals, and work orders issued for the construction of a tourist resort on the Surla plateau in the Mhadei wildlife sanctuary, which is to be notified as a tiger reserve.
In July 2023, the court directed state to notify the sanctuary and adjacent sanctuaries as a tiger reserve following recommendations from the national tiger conservation authority under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, Goa Foundation submitted to the high court.
The land designated for the resort lies entirely within the core area of the proposed tiger reserve, an ecologically-sensitive region known for its rich biodiversity, including tigers, sloth bears, leopards, pangolins, vipers, and over 300 unique plant species.
Despite the absence of any stay on the high court's directions and the pendency of proceedings seeking contempt action against the state for non-compliance with HC directions, authorities like the Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) and Goa Forest Development Corporation proceeded to issue approvals and work orders for the resort.
The project's outlay of nearly Rs 8 crore for permanent structures and an electric fence to exclude wildlife from the resort area further highlights the prioritisation of commercial interests over conservation imperatives, Goa Foundation said.

It is located on land measuring 6,660sqm of Surla village in Sattari, and falls within the core zone of the to-be-notified tiger reserve.
'The tourist resort project's continuation would cause irreversible ecological damage to one of Goa's most sensitive wildlife habitats,' Goa Foundation told the court.
The resort project is being promoted under the label of 'eco-tourism', with a view to developing a Surla waterfall viewpoint and converting it into a 'world-class destination', and has nothing to do with either wildlife or wildlife conservation, Goa Foundation told the court.
Goa Foundation stated that the forest minister and his wife, the chairperson of Goa Forest Development Corporation, have been vehemently opposed to implementing the high court's directions relating to the tiger reserve.

Influencers rank UAE as top destination for content creation in MENA
"The UAE leads as the top choice for MENA content creators, with influencers praising its creative energy, global reach, and nonstop opportunities/Representative Image The UAE has emerged as the top destination for content creators in the MENA region, with 45% of surveyed influencers naming it their country of choice, according to the newly released InfluAnswer Arabia report by Weber Shandwick MENAT. The study, now in its second edition, highlights how content creators view the GCC region as a hub for transformation, particularly in tourism and entertainment. The UAE's lead is followed by Saudi Arabia at 26% and Lebanon at 10%, reinforcing the Gulf's position as a driving force in regional content and influencer ecosystems. Why Creators Choose the UAE Influencers across the region view the UAE as a global creative hotspot that offers continuous opportunities for content. Speaking with local news outlet Khaleej Times, Abu Dhabi-based influencer Jacquelyn May, who has over 93,000 Instagram followers, said the country's appeal is deeply personal. 'I live in Abu Dhabi and truly love it. After spending nine years in the UAE, I can confidently say that both Dubai and the country as a whole are among the best places in the world to live.' 'That's why working to promote the city and country I call home is something I'm genuinely passionate about.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Rapidly build dynamic web experiences with preconfigured solutions - Google Cloud: Future of Infrastructure CIO | Google Cloud, AMD Undo She described the content scene in Dubai as a creative melting pot. 'There's beauty everywhere, and it's incredibly photogenic. You meet people from all over the world and get to explore different aspects of content that appeal to a wide range of audiences.' Even during the summer, May noted the UAE remains content-friendly. 'Whether it's spending time at Aquaventure, relaxing on the beach, or going night swimming, the city constantly offers new opportunities for content creation. It's a stark contrast to my time in Canada, where eight months of snow often meant staying indoors.' She also highlighted the importance of authenticity. 'My audience is largely based in Saudi Arabia and the UAE, so while I keep an eye on trends, I always ensure that my content reflects who I am and resonates with my community.' Regional Momentum and Market Growth The GCC region is not only attracting creators but also seeing exponential growth in the travel and tourism sectors. According to Danielle Curtis, Exhibition Director ME at Arabian Travel Market: 'Travel growth in the Middle East is incredibly strong, with annual growth averaging more than 7 per cent through 2030. Bold national visions, game-changing developments, and enhanced connectivity are some of the key factors driving this momentum.' The report also notes a trend toward long-form content. While short-form remains dominant, more creators are producing deeper, storytelling-focused content. Additionally, 60% of creators posted more frequently in the past year about social or personal causes, reflecting a shift toward values-driven content. May pointed out that many influencers who move from countries like the UK or Australia often tailor content to their home audiences. However, she has fully aligned her work with the GCC region: 'My niche is very much focused on the GCC, especially Saudi Arabia and the UAE. My audience and identity as a MENA creator are deeply rooted in this region.' Growing Role of AI and Evolving Creator Values The report shows a sharp rise in positive sentiment toward AI tools among creators. In 2024, only 29% of MENA influencers had a positive view of AI. That number has now climbed to 49%, as creators increasingly adopt automation and analytics to support their work. Key findings on AI usage: 63% believe AI will deliver more advanced tools and metrics Creators are using AI to automate repetitive tasks and free up time for storytelling and creative focus Ziad Hasbani, Regional CEO of Weber Shandwick MENAT, said: 'MENA's influencer landscape continues to mature, and despite increased competition, content creators are growing in confidence. The themes driving optimism centre around authenticity, community-building, and strategic diversification.' 'This year's report gives brands a clearer lens into what creators value and how to build partnerships that are authentic, impactful, effective, and built to last.'

International flyer footfall at Kolkata airport back to normal after conflict blip
Representative Image KOLKATA: International passenger footfall at Kolkata airport has bounced back after a sudden four-day slump in June caused by the closure of airspace over Middle East after Iran launched a missile strike on US air bases in Qatar and Iraq on June 23. Qatar, UAE, Bahrain and Kuwait had scrambled to close their airspace that left all West-bound flights from hubs in the Gulf stranded. According to airport officials, Kolkata's international flyer count dipped sharply between June 23 and June 26. However, as ceasefire talks between Iran and Israel brought back some stability to the region and airspace restrictions were lifted, flight schedules returned to normal, taking the footfall back to the daily average of around 6,500. 'All onward flights from the region — including those of Qatar Airways, Emirates, and Etihad — were disrupted due to the airspace closure. These carriers handle the bulk of West-bound traffic from Kolkata,' said Kolkata airport director Pravat Ranjan Beuria. 'Now that flight movement has resumed, we are seeing the numbers return to their usual levels.' Data shared by airport sources show that as many as 6,664 international passengers travelled via Kolkata on June 21 aboard 43 flights, and 6,705 passengers on 45 flights on June 22. On June 23, however, numbers dropped to 5,254, with only 39 flights plying. The next day, the count slid further to 4,655 on 35 flights. This slide continued till June 26. Once the crisis passed and a ceasefire was announced, flight operations picked up pace. By June 28, passenger volume was 6,496 over 42 flights. On June 29, it climbed to 6,503 across 45 international flights, close to the regular average. For Kolkata, which has no direct flights to the US or Europe, the halt in transit services through Middle-East hubs proved critical. According to chairman of Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI), eastern region, Anjani Dhanuka, about 500 passengers travel daily from Kolkata to Europe and the US via hubs like Doha, Dubai and Abu Dhabi. 'When the airspace was closed, those journeys were either cancelled or indefinitely postponed. Now that the flights are back on schedule, we are not seeing any fresh cancellations.' 'The initial wave of cancellations was a knee-jerk reaction to the geopolitical flare-up,' said Anil Punjabi, national executive committee member of the Travel Agents Federation of India. 'But people still see air travel as the most reliable mode, especially for long-haul business and education travel. Businessmen who postponed trips to the US and Europe have now rescheduled their plans and are back in the air.
