Man charged in murder investigation after scientist fatally injured on Dundee street

Yahoo7 days ago
A 20-year-old man has been charged after police launched a murder investigation into the death of a scientist who was found seriously injured on a street in Dundee.
Dr Fortune Gomo, 39, had been found in the city's South Road at around 4:25pm on Saturday.
Emergency services rushed to the scene but despite treatment from paramedics, the mother who lived in the area was pronounced dead at the scene.
The force confirmed a 20-year-old man has been charged in connection to the death.
'A post-mortem has taken place and her death is now being treated as murder,' the force said on Sunday.
Detective Superintendent Peter Sharp, the officer in charge of the inquiry, said his thoughts are with Dr Gomo's family.
Det Supt Sharp added: 'Our enquiries are continuing and I remain satisfied that the incident poses no wider risk to the public.
'At this early stage of the investigation we are following a number of lines of inquiry.'
Ms Machonesa said she and Dr Gomo went their separate ways after their studies.
Dr Gomo was an environmental and water resources scientist and her specialisms included water resources management, environmental sustainability, and policy.
According to social media, she was employed by Scottish Water in water resources planning.
She was awarded a PhD in Geography and Environmental Science from the University of Dundee, where her doctorate looked at the links between the environment and policy making in the Zambezi river basin, particularly in Malawi.
After her death, Dr Gomo's high school and university friend paid tribute her 'brilliance in the classroom' which 'was only matched by her emotional intelligence'.
Angela Machonesa, who studied with her at Chinhoyi High School and the National University of Science and Technology in Zimbabwe, said in a social media post: 'She was the kind of person you'd go to when you needed clarity, not just of mind, but of heart. She listened. She cared. She uplifted.
'No wonder she went on to earn her PhD. It was only natural. Her path was written in the stars long ago. To serve. To lead. To heal. And she was doing just that.
'But now, that dream, our Fortune's dream, has been violently, senselessly, stolen from us all.
She added: 'A child will now grow up without the love and presence of a mother. A family will mourn a daughter who once lit up their home with hope and promise.'
A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal and the man arrested is to appear at Dundee Sheriff Court on Monday.
He said he is 'acutely aware of content circulating on social media' and urged members of the public not to speculate on the circumstances of the incident.
There will be an increased police presence in the area.
Witnesses and anyone with information on the incident have been asked to contact the force on 101 quoting incident number 2283 of July 5 2025.
They can also speak to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Abuser who traumatised two young victims has four years added to sentence

APPEAL court judges have dramatically increased the jail term for a Carlisle man who sexually abused two teenagers. In April, a crown court judge in the city jailed 31-year-old Jacob Corrie, whose victims were left traumatised, for six years and four months. That jail term has now been increased by four years. The Appeal Court judges who imposed the new ten year and four month sentence accepted the prosecution's argument that the original sentence had been "unduly lenient." The detective who worked on the case welcomed the tougher sentence and encouraged other victims of such crimes to come forward. Carlisle Crown Court was told at the original hearing that Corrie, who initially denied any wrongdoing, that he carried out the abuse of the two victims in 2013 and 2014. He ultimately pleaded guilty to nine counts of sexual activity with a child; eight counts of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity; and two allegations of sexual communication with a child. The defendant, of Harris Crescent, Carlisle, first contacted the boy he abused via social media, with the two eventually meeting, despite the large age difference. Corrie, aged 19 or 20 at the time, knew the boy was only 14. It was after that initial contact that the sexual activity happened, representing the first four offences. Some of the later abuse happened when the teenager saw Corrie – who was drunk – in Carlisle's Bitts Park. After this, Corrie sent the boy messages, making indecent comments and asking for 'rude' pictures. Describing the final offence, prosecutor Peter Wilson said it happened when the boy went to a party in the city and the defendant got more and more drunk. The boy had only a couple of drinks, so his memory was crystal clear. The defendant followed the boy into the garden where he then pinned him down and forced himself on to the teenager. Corrie met the second victim, a girl, when she was 14 or 15. She recalled him telling her to 'not tell people' they were spending time together. During a school holiday, she happened to see him. After taking her to a park in Carlisle, he forced himself on to her. Mr Wilson said that a few days after this happened, the defendant messaged the girl, claiming he had pictures of them having sex. Corrie's defence barrister said the defendant was remorseful and had grappled with issues of his own sexuality and mental health problems. He had made attempts on his own life and was diagnosed with ADHD. The judge in the case said statements from the victims made it clear that the offending had a 'profound impact'. His confidence shattered, he was affected by anxiety and depression. The girl also was "deeply traumatised". What happened left her a 'much altered person'. But the judge highlighted that at the time of his offending Corrie himself was young and he had a challenging upbringing. 'You took on a habit of drinking too much and you were often drunk,' the Judge told Corrie, accepting that the defendant was remorseful." Corrie will be on the Sex Offender Register for life. Speaking on the appeal Detective Constable Rebecca Lynch from Cumberland CID said 'We welcome the revised sentence for Corrie, who committed numerous offences against his underage victims. 'Today's outcome ensures he spends further time in prison out of our community for these serious offences. 'We continue to urge anyone who has been victim of a sexual offence to contact police so that our officers can investigate. You will be supported throughout our investigation which is tailored to an individual's circumstances.' Find Specialist Sexual Violence Support in The North West HOW DO I REPORT TO POLICE? 'Bad day:' Trump reflects on assassination bid one year later

US President Donald Trump says "mistakes were made" but he's satisfied with the investigation into his near-assassination a year ago, as the Secret Service announced disciplinary actions Thursday against six staff members. In excerpts of an interview on Fox News' "My View with Lara Trump" show, airing Saturday, Trump, 79, said the elite close-protection service "had a bad day." "There were mistakes made. And that shouldn't have happened," Trump said in the interview conducted by his daughter-in-law Lara Trump, who has her own show on the Trump-friendly news channel. The Republican -- whose ear was nicked by a bullet while he addressed an election rally in Butler, Pennsylvania -- noted that the would-be assassin had access to a "prime building" overlooking the rally. One bystander was killed and two other people in addition to Trump were wounded before a counter-sniper killed the gunman -- 20-year-old Thomas Crooks. The sniper "was able to get him from a long distance with one shot. If he didn't do that, you would have had an even worse situation," Trump said. "His name is David and he did a fantastic job." Speaking of the post-incident investigation and "the larger plot," Trump said "I'm satisfied with it." "It was unforgettable," he said, recalling the drama. "I didn't know exactly what was going on. I got whacked. There's no question about that. And fortunately, I got down quickly. People were screaming." The Secret Service said in a statement that the July 13, 2024, attack was "nothing short of a tragedy" and "an operational failure that the Secret Service will carry as a reminder of the critical importance of its zero-fail mission." The agency cited communication, technical and human errors and said reforms were underway, including on coordination between different law enforcement bodies and establishment of a division dedicated to aerial surveillance. Six unidentified staff have been disciplined, the Secret Service said. The punishments range from 10 to 42 days suspension without pay and all six were put into restricted or non-operational positions. Among measures beefing up security, is an expansion of the fleet of armored golf carts to carry the president. Trump spends frequent weekends at his golf courses and in September last year was allegedly the target of a failed assassination plot while playing in Florida. "The agency has taken many steps to ensure such an event can never be repeated in the future," Secret Service Director Sean Curran said in a statement. sms/sla
