Some Disposable E-Cigarettes Are More Toxic Than Traditional Cigarettes, Study Finds

E-cigarettes have become increasingly popular over the last two decades, especially among young people. These sleek, deliciously flavored smoking devices are often marketed as a safer alternative to conventional cigarettes, but alarming new research challenges that assumption.
In a study published June 25 in the journal ACS Central Science, researchers tested three popular disposable vape brands for hazardous metals and metalloids such as lead, chromium, antimony, and nickel. Inhaling these toxins can increase the risk of cancer, respiratory disease, and nerve damage. The findings show that e-cigarettes emit dangerously high levels of toxic metals—orders of magnitude higher than levels emitted by traditional cigarettes and other e-cigarettes. One brand released more lead during a day's use than nearly 20 packs of cigarettes. Given the widespread underage use of vapes, the findings underscore an urgent need for regulatory action, the researchers conclude.
'Our study highlights the hidden risk of these new and popular disposable electronic cigarettes—with hazardous levels of neurotoxic lead and carcinogenic nickel and antimony—which stresses the need for urgency in enforcement,' co-author Brett Poulin, an assistant professor of environmental toxicology at the University of California, Davis, said in a statement. 'These risks are not just worse than other e-cigarettes but worse in some cases than traditional cigarettes.'
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cracked down on brands selling flavored, disposable vapes in the U.S. due to concerns about youth access, health risks, and unauthorized sales. Despite issuing warning letters to popular brands, slapping retailers with civil penalties, and blocking e-cigarette imports from other countries such as China, the agency has failed to keep these devices out of the U.S. market.
In the past few years, sales of disposable vapes have overtaken sales of older, refillable vapes. According to the FDA's Annual National Youth Tobacco Survey for 2025, disposable e-cigarettes are the most commonly used tobacco product among young people. The survey found that 5.9% of middle and high school students (1.63 million) reported current use of e-cigarettes, and of those students, 55.6% use disposable vapes.
Previous studies have investigated the elemental composition of refillable e-cigarettes, but few have looked into these newer devices. To fill that gap, Poulin and his colleagues analyzed the metals and metalloids inside seven disposable vapes made by three brands, including flavored and unflavored liquids. They selected the brands based on popularity and purchased the e-cigarettes from online vendors based in the U.S. All the devices they tested contained nicotine except one, which allowed the researchers to test if nicotine influences the metal concentrations of e-liquids (commonly known as 'vape juice').
The key components of any vape are a battery, e-liquid (commonly known as 'vape juice' or 'e-juice), and a heating coil. When the user presses a button on the device or—in some cases—simply inhales, the battery heats the coil and turns the e-liquid into an aerosol. These metal components can leach into the e-liquid and thus work their way into the lungs.
The researchers tested the metal concentrations of unused e-liquids and aerosols, using a special instrument to activate the e-cigarettes and generate between 500 and 1,500 puffs per device. They found that 'these disposable devices have toxins already present in the e-liquid, or they're leaching quite extensively from their components into e-liquids and ultimately transferred to the smoke,' lead author Mark Salazar, a PhD candidate in Poulin's lab, said in the statement.
Some unused e-liquids contained high levels of antimony, a toxic metalloid. Heating coils leached nickel into the e-liquid, while leaded bronze alloy components in some devices leached nickel and lead. The vapors of some devices contained surprisingly high metal levels, including antimony and lead. Interestingly, the metal concentrations of the aerosols increased as the number of puffs increased, suggesting that exposure worsens as the device ages.
Overall, the researchers determined that disposable e-cigarette users are exposed to markedly higher levels of toxic metals and metalloids than those who use refillable vapes, which may lead to increased health risks. Three of the tested vapes produced vapors that contained nickel levels that exceeded cancer risk thresholds, and two emitted potentially cancerous amounts of antimony. Four devices had nickel and lead emissions that surpassed risk thresholds for illnesses besides cancer, such as neurological damage and respiratory disease.
Of the nearly 100 disposable e-cigarette brands available in the U.S., this study tested only three. Despite regulatory efforts, these devices remain wildly popular among adolescents. The researchers hope that their work inspires others to investigate the health risks associated with disposable e-cigarettes, as it would appear they won't be going away anytime soon.

Health officials said in a news release that it is investigating reports of Cesium-137 (Cs-137) contamination in shipping containers and frozen shrimp products processed by an Indonesian company, PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati of Indonesia, also known as BMS Food. Some of the raw frozen shrimp products processed by an Indonesian company are sold at Walmart stores in 13 states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas and West Virginia, according to the FDA. Among the products includes Walmart's "great value brand frozen shrimp," the health agency said. "If you have recently purchased raw frozen shrimp from Walmart that matches this description, throw it away," the FDA said. "Do not eat or serve this product." Health officials advised people to talk to their health care providers if they think they've been exposed to elevated levels of the contaminant. PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati and Walmart did not immediately return requests for comment. Cs-137 is the radioactive form of Cesium, "a soft, flexible, silvery-white metal that becomes liquid near room temperature" used for medical devices and gauges, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Repeated exposure to low doses of Cs-137 can increase the risk of cancer, "resulting from damage to DNA within living cells of the body," health officials said in their news release. The FDA said that the U.S. Customs and Border Protection alerted the health agency to the detection of Cs-137 in shipping containers in Los Angeles, Houston, Miami and Savannah, Georgia. It said that all containers and products that tested positive for Cs-137 were denied entry into the country. Health officials also cautioned that it did not detect Cs-137 in any product above the current derived intervention levels for Cs-137, of 1200 Bq/kg. However, the FDA said that "the level detected in the breaded shrimp sample could represent a potential health concern" if it is combined with radiation in the environment or from medical procedures.

Being overweight or obese has long been linked to a greater risk of developing or dying from breast cancer. New research suggests a reason: Certain breast cancer tumors may feed on neighboring fat cells. The findings may help scientists find ways to treat triple-negative breast cancer, which is notoriously aggressive and has lower survival rates. Moreover, the results may apply to any cancer that uses fat as an energy source, according to the report, published Wednesday in Nature Communications. Triple-negative accounts for about 15% of all breast cancers. It tends to be more common in Black women and women under 40 and is more likely to recur than other cancers. The breast tumor cells appear to gain access to the fat cells' content by poking a straw-like structure into the fat cells and then dislodging the lipids stored there. If researchers can find a way to block tumors from tunneling into neighboring fat cells without harming patients, they might have a way to cure the often deadly cancers, said the study's lead author, Jeremy Williams, a postdoctoral scholar at the University of California, San Francisco. 'Aggressive cancer cells can co-opt different nutrient sources to help them grow, including by stimulating fat cells in the breast to release their lipids,' Williams said. 'In the future, new treatments might starve the tumor cells by preventing their access to lipids from neighboring cells.' Lipids are fatty compounds, such as cholesterol, that are used largely for energy storage in the body. Williams and his colleagues ran multiple experiments, some using tissue from breast cancer patients and others using a mouse model of a breast cancer patient. In the experiments exclusively using human tissue, the researchers examined fat cells at varying distances from tumor cells. They found that the closer the fat cells were to tumor cells, the more depleted in lipids they were. When the researchers blocked the tumor cells' ability to build the straw-like structures, officially known as gap junctions, the tumors stopped growing. They found a similar result in a mouse model, in which tumor cells from breast cancer patients were tweaked genetically so they lost some of their ability to make gap junctions. When the tissue was implanted in mice, the mice were protected. 'Knocking out a single gene impaired the formation and progression of the tumor,' Williams said. Williams and his colleagues started looking at mechanisms to explain an earlier finding from the lab he worked at. 'These tumors were burning fatty acids as a source of energy,' he said. 'It seemed an urgent question to answer where the fatty acids were coming from.' As it turns out, several medications that inhibit gap junction formation are being studied in early-phase clinical trials for other purposes, Williams said. How cancer 'grows and feeds itself' Dr. Julia McGuinness, a breast cancer specialist and an associate professor of medicine at the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, said it's the first evidence of a mechanism showing the association between fat and cancer. It's also 'suggesting one pathway to treat aggressive cancers for which we don't have any good therapies,' McGuinness said. 'We already know that obese women who have these kinds of cancer have worse outcomes.' The new research may also suggest that lifestyle modifications that would help women achieve healthy weights might also protect against such cancers, McGuinness said. 'Slimming down could be protective,' she said, adding that obesity has been shown to be a risk factor for all breast cancers. The authors of the study found ways to look at the mechanism linking fat to breast cancer growth in ways that couldn't be tested in human beings, said Justin Balko, the Ingram professor of cancer research at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. 'They found a new way cancer grows and feeds itself,' Balko said. 'If some of the same effects are observed in humans, it might be fodder for differences in the way we treat patients.' But there are caveats, Balko said. 'For example, we don't know if this is a major mechanism by which breast cancer grows in humans,' he said. 'But it makes a lot of sense.'

File Photo by Juan Manuel Blanco/EPA-EFE Aug. 20 (UPI) -- The Food and Drug Administration has authorized emergency use of animal drugs to treat and prevent infestations of the New World Screwworm, which poses an emerging threat to U.S. livestock and food security. The parasite infests warm-blooded animals and in rare cases humans, causing tissue damage and occasionally death. Though eradicated in both North and Central America a decades ago, the screwworm has progressed north since 2022 and is nearing the U.S. southern border. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said it issued a declaration on Tuesday allowing the FDA to issue emergency use authorizations for animal drugs to prevent infestations. "Today, we are taking decisive action to safeguard the nation's food supply from this emerging threat," HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said in a statement. "This authorization equips FDA to act quickly, limit the spread of New World Screwworm and protect America's livestock." Endemic to Cuba, Haiti, Dominican Republic and the countries of South America, the New World Screwworm strikingly resembles a fly, but when in its larval stage it burrows into the flies of a living animals, such as livestock, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said. The United States has worked with Panama for decades to prevent the parasite's northward expansion, according to the USDA, which resulted in the eradication of the insect from the United States in 1966. There are no FDA-approved drugs for NWS, but through an Emergency Use Authorization, the FDA can permit the use of certain animal drug products that have been approved for other purposes or are available in other countries. "This emergency use authorization is another tool we can use in the fight against New World Screwworm," Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said. "Our cattle ranchers and livestock producers are relying on the Trump administration to defend their livelihoods. Stopping this pest is a national security priority and we are linking arms across President [Donald] Trump's Cabinet to defend our borders and push back this threat."
