WWE SmackDown results, highlights (April 4): Kevin Owens injured, Charlotte Flair overwhelmed by boos

Yahoo05-04-2025

WWE didn't play around in its first show back in the U.S. after a successful European tour. Chicago was revved up and ready to go, as arguably the best wrestling city in the country. There's no time to waste because this show delivered in every way.
Let's get to the bad news before the good news.
WrestleMania 41 has suffered a shake-up, as Kevin Owens has been dealing with a neck injury for the past four months that will now require surgery. He won't make it to his match with Randy Orton.
Despite reports swirling throughout the week, this felt like a possible angle — or surprise retirement at worst — the longer it went on. Owens apologized to the crowd, stating that he wished to have his match with Orton. It felt off because his recent character antics have made him the most despicable heel imaginable, so trying to garner sympathy would have been nearly impossible. By the end, fans applauded Owens on his way out, as they should have. He'll be missed from "the show of shows," and hopefully, has a speedy, healthy recovery.
So, now what happens to Orton? He hit "WWE SmackDown" general manager Nick Aldis with an RKO.

I've been demanding an Aldis match in WWE. Do the right thing, Triple H. Give the man his debut match at WrestleMania against Orton. It would be beautiful.
Chicago absolutely melted Charlotte Flair. Wow. The toxic rain of boos she received was wild. Flair couldn't even get a word out and seemingly gave up on her promo battle with Tiffany Stratton, who completely scorched Flair along with the crowd. The champion hit some deep cut lines about the fans, her dad Ric Flair, Flair's past drinking troubles and even her marriage failures.
This. Felt. Personal.

Flair blurs the line so well in instances like this — or doesn't, considering past moments like her title exchange with Becky Lynch.
The scene closed in a cringe-worthy manner when Flair tried to make fun of Stratton's voice through the boos before entirely breaking kayfabe to say Stratton's real-life partner Ludwig Kaiser was in her direct messages. This is a near-40-year-old woman acting like a high schooler, mind you. If the feud didn't have any legs before, this was a Hail Mary, unnecessary heat grab to what was inevitably always going to be an awesome match.
Take your pick on whether you find promos like this good or bad. There isn't really anything in between. But one thing was undeniable: Stratton came off as the better of the two (albeit partly thanks to the Chicago crowd).
Topping CM Punk reactions in his hometown of Chicago is no easy feat, so congrats on that, Flair. Don't get it twisted though, "The Second-City Saint" still received praise during both appearances, which bookended this "WWE SmackDown."
A fired-up Punk was mandatory to start the night in Chicago after his big WrestleMania 41 main event announcement last week. The former WWE Champion cut an inspired promo about how he "wasn't supposed to be here," and applied that to his WWE return, along with life in general. The guy is good at what he does. What more needs to be said? Not much until the end, as he told Paul Heyman, who arrived all friendly, asking for Punk's elusive secret favor.

Heyman was shown throughout the show waiting for Roman Reigns backstage, and promised Punk his favor no matter what it was. As most expected, the favor was Heyman's support in Punk's corner for the triple-threat match. It was predictable, but executed perfectly. Remember, folks. Predictable isn't bad as long as it makes sense and is done well. This was all of that.
Seth Rollins laughed away in the background. Heyman cried with Reigns in disbelief before he was hit with a GTS from Punk. It's so interesting how much Heyman has added to this whole program because he's really such a little piece to it all. Neither Reigns nor Punk ever needed a mouthpiece manager, but here we are, utilizing him as a key to build the animosity between everyone.
The final shot between Punk and Rollins staring down with a screaming Heyman in the background was money. Their match at WrestleMania is going to be ridiculously good.

LA Knight and Braun Strowman are just casually hanging out in The Bloodline saga ahead of WrestleMania 41. It's worked for the most part, at least for Strowman, who has more of a connection than the United States Champion Knight. If anything, this entire program has highlighted how significantly better of a speaker Knight is than any of these guys combined. His backstage encounter with Tama Tonga was stellar.

— WWE (@WWE) April 5, 2025
To sort out the chaos from last week, Knight laid the bricks to Tonga in a fun, short singles match, while Strowman and Jacob Fatu had a "last man standing" No. 1 title contender trilogy match. Surprise, surprise, it was awesome.
There was a really cool spot you don't often see in last man standing matches, when Fatu went for a quick win by hitting two moonsaults. Strowman cleverly rolled out of the ring to stop the count. A little innovation goes a long way.
Jacob Fatu is wasting no time! 😤#SmackDown pic.twitter.com/8zMiipWKtE
— WWE (@WWE) April 5, 2025
If there was one nitpick or gripe with this match, it was how some spots were just made to be no-sells. Strowman and Fatu got up at the nine-count after a ridiculous superplex in the crowd through tables. The spot was all to get the duo back in the ring for another table spot in the corner after setting it up earlier in the match. That one did the trick on Strowman, as they each tried to use the ropes and reach their feet.
I was hoping we'd end up with another triple-threat match, if possible, but Fatu getting the win for a shot at Knight on the biggest stage is the right move with all that's been invested in him (and The Bloodline). Now, it's just a matter of how things play out with Solo Sikoa at or before WrestleMania.

Ray Fenix is in WWE. It's weird, it's deserved, it's awesome. Like his brother Penta, Fenix already has an epic entrance. Hopefully, Fenix can finally get the singles title run he deserved in AEW because he's one of the most exciting wrestlers today.
Emotion got the better of Fenix as soon as he got the pin with a sweet "Mexican Musclebuster." Unfortunately, Fenix enters WWE at a strange time, this soon before WrestleMania 41. I was racking my brain to think about where he'll fit in, and what do you know? WWE decided to go with the oldest tradition in the book: Involve the Latino with fellow Latinos. Therefore, it looks like Berto and Los Garza will have a feud with Fenix, as they were shown backstage after Fenix's win. Lazy, predictable, and a waste of time.
Welcome the newest addition to #SmackDown, @ReyFenixMx! 👏👏👏 pic.twitter.com/gvk4ILX8He
— WWE (@WWE) April 5, 2025
Regarding Frazer, he was a perfect dance partner for Fenix in a vacuum (aside from a scary botch or two). These guys couldn't possibly have a bad match. However, did Triple H suddenly decide NXT's Tag Team champions were expendable? First, Axiom took a loss to Gunther in Spain, and now Frazer to Fenix. Obviously, there's no shame in a Gunther loss, but that doesn't mean it should have happened. The same thing goes for this Fenix match. As fun as they both were, they unnecessarily poured some dirt on champions.
Overall, the good of Fenix and the match outweighs the bad, which will surely be ignored in the grand scheme.

1. Damian Priest's car-smashing attack on Drew McIntyre last week got glass in the Scot's eye. Now, he has an eyepatch and looks like Solid Snake from Metal Gear Solid. One-eyed McIntyre is born.

2. Aldis announced a women's tag team gauntlet match for next week. The match will determine the next challengers to Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez's titles at WrestleMania 41. That's cool with me. Gauntlet matches are always a good time and an easy way to find a rightful contender.
3. Motor City Machine Guns beat DIY in another banger. DIY's shenanigans and attempts to cheat a win cost them a win. It was a fun and creative new wrinkle to the rivalry, and now we have MCMG vs. The Street Profits. Who can be upset about that?

I wish the entire Naomi and Jade Cargill saga was getting more time to keep them out of the Uncrowned Gem territory, but it's all been money. Cargill, in particular, on this "WWE SmackDown" continued to radiate that superhero aura, taking out security in an attempt to get her hands on Naomi. Aldis made their match official for WrestleMania 41. This year's mega spectacle is seriously stacked.
IT'S OFFICIAL! .@Jade_Cargill and Naomi will settle the score at #WrestleMania 👊😤@TheTrinity_Fatu #SmackDown pic.twitter.com/pziMcG9cEs

Like the last time we saw B-Fab, she was again fabulous, and I'm glad she got at least some TV time. More would be nice, but it's a work in progress. WWE avoided the brawl with this match and segment, leading to the perfect finale of a WrestleMania showcase. Although Cargill should remain a force, the more we see this new Naomi, I almost think she should go over. After all, we have to get back to the Bianca Belair dynamic.
👑It's happened again, everyone. More Uncrowned history! AEW Dynamite is the only show to have scored a perfect score since our Uncrowned launch. Well, I should say "was," because this "WWE SmackDown" stuck its return to U.S. landing and then some. I give this show a Crown score of: 10/10. 👑

Tender Store Owner Cheryl Daskas Dies at 71

Funeral services were held in Troy, Mich., on Friday for Cheryl Daskas, a former model who ran the directional fashion boutique Tender. The cause of death for Daskas, who died on June 9, was not immediately known, according to the publicist Ellen Carey, who was a friend. Daskas had seemed 'fine' while working in the store on Saturday, aside from complaining of a leg issue, Carey said. She was found 'peacefully' at her home, following a wellness check by one of her employees, Carey said. More from WWD Groundbreaking Fashions Focus of Tokyo Exhibition Suite Talk: Frank Darling's Kegan Fisher on Making the Move From Tech to Art The History Behind the World's Most Expensive Tiaras: From Elizabeth Taylor's Mike Todd Headpiece to the $12.7 Million Henckel von Donnersmarck Tiara and More Born in Detroit, the 71-year-old spent her career in the fashion industry in different capacities. For the past 32 years, she owned and operated the store Tender in Birmingham, Mich., with her sister Karen. Tender is known for its European designer labels, which prior to the store's opening were not in abundance in the Midwest. The pair owned the downtown building that houses Tender, and they shared a home as well. Daskas earned a bachelor's degree at Michigan State University before getting into fashion. During her high school and college years, she modeled for the Ford Motor Company, Hudson's department store and other brands, before deciding 'that's not where she was going to make her money,' her sister said. 'She said it was like looking for a job every day of your life. Our mother was a model too. She was British and Scandinavian. They were both so pretty.' Tender once resided next door to a leading designer retailer Linda Dresner. After Dresner shuttered that store, Tender picked up Dries Van Noten. It also sells Erdem, Simone Rocha and Ashlyn, a 2025 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalist, for its 3,000-square-foot shop. Lanvin was once a strong seller there, during the Alber Elbaz years, Carey said. With pale blue walls, architectural displays and top-shelf names, Tender looks more like the type of a polished retailer one finds in Manhattan or Los Angeles. Ashlyn's managing director Johanne Shepley Siff met the sisters 30 years ago in her former role as senior vice president of sales and marketing at Prada. Siff said, 'We've lost one of the gems of the specialty store business. Cheryl was a force. I called her a 'textile archeologist.' She could immediately identify products of integrity.' Sift added, 'Tender is one of the opinion leaders, and one of the go-to retailers at the high-end specialty store. They not only take the risk to identify emerging talent, but they also have the structure and wherewithal to introduce that talent to a customer they have cultivated to appreciate new talent.' Accustomed to working six days a week, Cheryl Daskas would arrive at 8:30 am, if a customer requested that. The co-owners called their store employees 'Tender-ettes,' and they stayed connected with those past and present through the years, Karen Daskas said. 'Cheryl loved what she did. It was not about her or Tender. It was always about everybody else doing well,' Karen Daskas said. 'She had this gift, where she could look at someone and immediately know what size they were and what types of clothes would look good on them. And you didn't have to be a size four. You could be any size. She was just going to make you look great and feel the best that you can be.' With a larger-than-life personality, she was recognizable for her auburn cropped hair, broad smile and designer outfits. 'She was very tall and grand. When she came into a room, she stole the show,' Carey, who owns Seed Inc., said. Even in the early 1990s, the sisters understood the importance of retailers working closely with manufacturers to create items that would appeal to their customers. They took a highly personal approach to helping shoppers in the store and were also loyal supporters of the arts community through events and philanthropy in Birmingham, Carey said. Recalling how they collaborated on vintage jewelry shows at Tender on occasion, Carey said, 'Cheryl could sell like no one else could. Her heart was 100 percent in everything she did. Why do you want to do something if you're not going to do it well?' They would typically sell 150 of 200 items during a two-day sale. Kenneth Jay Lane items were of particular interest to shoppers and to Daskas, who would set aside five pairs of earrings for herself, Carey said. 'I would say, 'Cheryl, these are for the customers,' and she would say, 'Well, I'm a customer.'' But she wore them during the trunk show sales, and she was the showpiece, Carey said. 'And you're going to want them, if she's wearing them. Karen would not have done that. Karen would have sold them.' While Cheryl Daskas handled front-of-the house sales and the store's social media, Karen Daskas managed the buying trips. Off the clock, Cheryl Daskas enjoyed gardening, relaxing poolside, grilling and sharing meals and binge-watching shows with her sister. 'Every night we would tell eachother we loved eachother and give eachother a hug. We never fought except for a couple of sister squabbles,' Karen Daskas said. 'It's just a shock. We never got married and we didn't have kids. We have two little Kerry Terriers 'Whiskey' and 'Gogo.'' Daskas is survived by her sister. Check out which missing WWE star is backstage at SmackDown today (possible SPOILER)

As of this morning, we knew that tonight's (June 13) episode of SmackDown would feature opening round matches in the King & Queen of the Ring tournaments, but we didn't exactly know which ones. That has been clarified, as WWE is now listing the following three tournament matches for the show: Cody Rhodes vs. Damian Priest vs. Andrade vs. Shinsuke Nakamura Randy Orton vs. LA Knight vs. Aleister Black vs. Carmelo Hayes Charlotte Flair vs. Alexa Bliss vs. Candice LeRae vs. Chelsea Green This is Cody's first match on Raw or SmackDown programming (excluding dark matches) since February, per the data at CageMatch. It also means that Randy Orton is back on SmackDown tonight for the first time since he lost against John Cena at Backlash in early May. Advertisement Speaking of Cena, WWE is advertising him for the show too, along with United States Champion Jacob Fatu and Money in the Bank contract winner Naomi. In addition to the above information that's been officially announced by WWE, Fightful Select is reporting that Kiana James is backstage at SmackDown today. She last wrestled in WWE on a June 2024 episode of Raw, and was reportedly on the sidelines after that due to a leg injury. That she is backstage at SmackDown today doesn't guarantee she will be featured on TV, but it's at least a possibility. There's also yesterday's story about Hikuleo scheduled to be in the building tonight, which has led to speculation about his potential debut in The Bloodline as Talla Tonga. What are you looking forward to the most on tonight's episode of SmackDown, Cagesiders? Advertisement More from

Seth Rollins: CM Punk Is Not Good For What We Do

Seth Rollins still has no love lost for CM Punk. Earlier this week, on Monday Night Raw, Seth Rollins, Bronson Reed and Bron Breakker cost CM Punk his chance to enter the Money in the Bank Ladder Match. Advertisement Rollins was a special guest on the Up and Adams Show with Kay Adams. During the interview, Rollins shared that he doesn't think CM Punk is a good guy, and is convinced that Punk is not good for WWE. 'Yeah, we made sure [CM] Punk wasn't in the Ladder Match. Punk is not good for what we do. Look, he's a bad dude. I put it out there many times. He's not a good dude. Yes, we made sure Punk wasn't in this Money in the Bank Ladder Match. I beat him in the main event of WrestleMania. I don't want him anywhere near this contract,' Rollins explained. Seth Rollins says CM Punk doesn't deserve a spot in the Money In The Bank match 'You know what? I bet Josh Allen would love an easy path to the Super Bowl. Absolutely [Yes, eliminating CM Punk makes the path easier to win the Money in the Bank Ladder Match.] Absolutely… Work smarter. Not harder. I've dealt with CM Punk. I've dealt with CM Punk for far too long. This guy shouldn't even be in my wind space. I want him gone. I want him out of here. He doesn't deserve a spot at a high-profile match like that,' Seth Rollins said. Advertisement Seth Rollins had already qualified for the Money in the Bank Ladder Match. The Money in the Bank Premium Live Event will be taking place this Saturday. During the show, Rollins also said that he couldn't even team with CM Punk if it guaranteed his beloved Chicago Bears win a Super Bowl, and shared who hates Punk more than he does. Can Rollins become a two-time Mr. Money in the Bank? The post Seth Rollins: CM Punk Is Not Good For What We Do appeared first on Wrestlezone.
