Bus carrying mourners from funeral overturns in Kenya, killing 25 people
The driver lost control of the bus as it approached a roundabout at high speed and plunged into a ditch, according to Peter Maina, a regional traffic enforcement officer for the province of Nyanza, where Kisumu is located. A 10-year-old girl was among the crash victims, he said. Twenty-nine people were initially reported injured in the crash, and four of them died later in the hospital, said Fredrick Ouma Oluga, the principal secretary in charge of medical services in Kenya.
The crash shocked many in the region, sparking renewed calls for tougher road safety measures. Road accidents are common in Kenya and the wider East African region, where roads are often narrow and in poor condition with many potholes. Police often blame road accidents on speeding drivers. In another accident on Thursday, nine people were killed in a bus crash in the town of Naivasha in the county of Nakuru. The victims were among 32 workers going to work when the bus crashed at a railway crossing, police said.

The singer's supporters, including some from Japan and mainland China, formed long lines inside the court building to secure a seat in the main courtroom before the hearing. Others from mainland China who attended said they were not fans but wanted to learn more about the case, especially after seeing criticism of the female interpreter online. University student Betty Zhong from the Chinese city of Shenzhen said she was not a Kamimura fan but had attended the court hearings in Hong Kong because a friend likes the J-pop idol and she wanted to know what happened. She said she was surprised Kamimura was charged during a visit to Hong Kong. "News reports are not so comprehensive. When I come here, I can understand it holistically and the explanations from both sides,' she said. Kamimura is also an actor who appeared in several TV dramas, including the boys' love series "Our Youth' and the popular drama "Ossan's Love Returns.'

Bangladeshi officials testify against former British minister Siddiq in anti-corruption trial
DHAKA, Bangladesh, Aug 13, (AP): Bangladeshi anti-corruption officials testified in court on Wednesday against former British Minister Tulip Siddiq, accused of using her familial connection to deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to obtain state-owned land plots in the South Asian country. Siddiq, who is Hasina's niece, resigned from her post as an anti-corruption minister in Prime Minister Keir Starmer 's government in January following reports that she lived in London properties linked to her aunt and was named in an anti-corruption investigation in Bangladesh. She is being tried together with her mother, Sheikh Rehana, brother, Radwan Mujib, and sister, Azmina. Siddiq has been charged with facilitating their receipt of state land in a township project near the capital, Dhaka. The four were indicted earlier and asked to appear in court, however, the prosecution said they absconded and would be tried in absentia. The trial at the Dhaka Special Judge Court-4 formally began Wednesday with testimonies by officials of the country's Anti-Corruption Commission. By Wednesday afternoon, the court had heard from two officials and a third is expected to testify later in the day, said Muhammad Tariqul Islam, a public prosecutor. Siddiq's lawyers had previously called the charges baseless and politically motivated. Separately, the anti-corruption investigation has also alleged that Siddiq's family was involved in brokering a 2013 deal with Russia for a nuclear power plant in Bangladesh in which large sums of money were said to have been embezzled. Siddiq represents the north London district of Hampstead and Highgate in Parliament, served in Britain's center-left Labor Party government as economic secretary to the Treasury - the minister responsible for tackling financial corruption. Hasina was ousted after a 15-year rule in a student-led mass uprising in August last year. She fled to India and has been in exile ever since. Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus took over as interim leader and vowed to try the former prime minister. Hundreds of protesters were killed during the uprising and Hasina now faces charges, including crimes against humanity.

Great white shark is seen near popular beaches in Maine, sparking a police warning
SCARBOROUGH, Maine, Aug 13, (AP): Reports of a large great white shark near some of Maine's most popular beaches have prompted police in one coastal town to issue a warning on Tuesday. Scarborough's marine resource officer got word of the roughly 10- to 12-foot shark (over 3 meters) on Monday, police said. The shark was spotted in the area of Crescent Beach State Park, Higgins Beach, and Pine Point Beach, they said, all located within a half-hour's drive of Portland. Commercial clam fisherman David Lancaster was able to take drone footage of the shark swimming just beneath the surface, its grey fin poking through the gentle swells. He said seeing the big shark was "magnificent,' if a little surprising. "It was pretty crazy to see in the local waters. There are some really amazing creatures in the sea,' Lancaster, who lives in nearby Scarborough, said. "It's in the back of your head, but you have to accept it.' White sharks, made famous 50 years ago in the movie "Jaws,' are not commonly seen off Maine, but have lived in the state's waters for centuries. Sightings ticked up in recent years, and some scientists say the state's growing population of seals could be a reason for more shark activity. White sharks feed on marine mammals such as seals. The police department in Scarborough said they were circulating the drone footage "for public situational awareness' after the big fish was spotted. "We are sharing this information promptly to keep the community informed,' police said in a statement. Fatal shark bites for humans are exceedingly rare. The first recorded fatal shark attack in Maine happened in the summer of 2020 when a great white shark killed 63-year-old Julie Dimperio Holowach of New York City. She was attacked off Bailey Island, around 15 miles (24 kilometers) northeast of Portland. The state responded with efforts to provide beachgoers with more warning about the presence of sharks.
