Thomas Frank is Daniel Levy's biggest gamble yet after 13 managers in 25 years at Tottenham following Postecoglou axe

DANIEL LEVY was never going to win a popularity contest among the Tottenham fanbase.
But after his drastic action over the last week, he is now well and truly under the pump, as Ange Postecoglou might have put it.

Whether the views of many on Levy and the club's ownership are too entrenched to be altered by now is hugely debatable.
But if this latest shove on the managerial revolving door in N17 goes badly, then the bad feeling towards the board could reach new decibel levels.

Frank, 51, will receive plenty of goodwill from many fans, who will respect how he had the Bees regularly overachieving during his near seven-year reign.
But they will also be extending a word of warning to the friendly Dane over his new employer and half expecting him to be out on his ear in less than two years — because that is what usually happens.

As a statement following Postecoglou's sacking from protest group Change for Tottenham read: 'The real issue is not who wears the tracksuit but who holds the power.
"Daniel Levy and ENIC have now overseen more than two decades of false dawns, short-term thinking and cultural decay.
'The manager may change but the problem stays the same.'
And 59-year-old Postecoglou — should Frank decide to seek out his opinion — will hardly paint a positive picture of his old boss either, having been strung along with radio silence for a fortnight before being cold-bloodedly handed his P45.
In fairness to Levy, making a change was not the easy, crowd-pleasing call.
That would have been sticking with the Australian, given how many of the fanbase — including the thousands that previously wanted Ange out — were now behind him. Nor was it the cheap option either, flying in the face of a consistent criticism in this instance.
Levy and majority owners ENIC have regularly been accused of not splashing the cash to a proportionate degree for their revenue streams.

Critics do not just include disgruntled supporters but current star defender Cristian Romero, who took aim at the board's lack of investment during a TV interview in December.
Yet they have forked out around £5million to pay off Postecoglou and his staff, along with the £2m bonus the former Celtic boss picked up for his Europa League win.
And they have spent more than £10m on landing Frank, plus his highly rated No 2 Justin Cochrane, fitness coach Chris Haslam and analyst Joe Newton.
Levy believes the pitiful Premier League form under Postecoglou was more important than winning a European trophy.
Spurs finished 17th last season and Levy made his point with reference to '78 points taken from 66 games' in the announcement confirming Postecoglou's sacking.
Defender Micky van de Ven has already described binning Postecoglou as 'a strange decision', summing up the mood of a squad who were firmly behind the Athens-born boss.
Whether it proves to be the right call or not, only time will tell.
But one thing is for certain, if it does not, the fans will be venting their anger in only one direction.

Tottenham to rival Man Utd for Brentford star

TOTTENHAM ARE prepared to rival Manchester United for Brentford attacker Bryan Mbeumo this summer after the appointment of Thomas Frank, the PA news agency understands. Spurs announced former Brentford boss Frank as their new head coach on Thursday night on a three-year deal. Advertisement One of Frank's first moves in charge could be to try and tempt Mbeumo to follow him across London. United had already registered an interest in Mbeumo, who scored 20 goals for Brentford last season, but is about to enter the final year of his contract. Brentford have the option of a further 12 months and reportedly want a figure in the region of the £62.5 million (€73 million) that United spent to sign Matheus Cunha from Wolves. After initial talks with Brentford, United appeared in pole position to bring Mbuemo to Old Trafford, but Spurs are ready to try to reunite the Cameroon international with his old boss, PA understands. Frank was appointed by Spurs after they sacked Ange Postecoglou last week despite Europa League glory. During a near seven-year spell in charge of Brentford, Frank managed 317 matches and won 136 as he guided the club into the Premier League for the first time with Championship play-off success at Wembley in 2021. Frank said 'a big piece of my heart' would always remain at Brentford in an emotional message posted on their official club website.

Luke Dennison denies Mason Melia to earn Drogheda another draw in Inchicore

St Pat's and Drogheda played out their third scoreless league draw of the season by the banks of the Camac River as a penalty by the Spurs-bound Mason Melia was saved by visiting keeper Luke Dennison. Drogheda came to Inchicore with just three defeats from their 19 games this season but just one win in five before the international break and were thankful to keeper Dennison, and indeed the woodwork, as they left Richmond Park with a hard-fought point, their tenth draw of the season. Drogheda enjoyed some decent early pressure on the home defence without really penetrating, a nice one-two between Douglas James-Taylor and Warren Davis saw the latter's curling left-foot shot saved by Joe Anang. Having survived what Drogs had thrown at them, Saints then almost scored from their first attack as Jason McClelland's corner was headed just wide by Tom Grivosti in the 17th minute. The miss galvanised St Pat's, who were awarded a penalty when Taylor stood on the Achilles of Kian Leavy, right on the edge of the area, just past the midway point of the opening half. The tackle looked marginally outside, but referee Kevin O'Sullivan immediately pointed to the spot. However, Dennison guessed right, diving away to his left to deny Melia and keep it scoreless at half time Three minutes into the second half, United very nearly took the lead as Taylor, set up by Ryan Brennan, swivelled beautifully in the St Pat's area, but dragged his shot wide, while at the other end Zach Elbouzedi missed a great chance for the home side when he shot straight at Dennison from the edge of the area. Melia's curling effort then just missed the far post as St Pats turned up the heat on the away goal. Dennison was called into action again, acrobatically saving Simon Power's header from Ryan McLoughlin's cross. The home side's onslaught continued as Leavy then hit the post in a goalmouth scramble in the 50th minute. Both managers began to empty their respective benches as the second half wore on and it took the sting out of the game, Drogheda dealing well with the St Pats attack despite the home side enjoyed the lion's share of possession. Some in the home support thought St Pats had scored in the 76th minute, as McClelland's deflected shot hit the side netting, much to the amusement of the Drog's travelling support. Taylor then tested Anang with a shot that was dipping under the crossbar until the home keeper tipped it over for a corner, which was in truth the last real action of the contest before its inevitable conclusion. St Patrick's Athletic: Joseph Anang; Ryan McLaughlin, Joe Redmond, Tom Grivosti, Anto Breslin; Zach Elbouzedi (Jake Mulraney 61) Jason McClelland, Jamie Lennon, Simon Power (Conor Carty 87); Kian Leavy (Brandon Kavanagh 67); Mason Melia (Aidan Keena 67). Drogheda United: Luke Dennison; Owen Lambe, Conor Keeley, Andrew Quinn, Conor Kane (Kieran Cruise 63); Luke Heeney (Shane Farrell 56), Darragh Markey, Ryan Brennan, Frank George Cooper; Warren Davis (Thomas Oluwa 56), Douglas James-Taylor. Attendance: 4,139.
