The U.S. Says Britain Is Chilling Free Speech. Many Britons Point the Finger Back.
Her post was viewed 310,000 times. Now serving a 31-month prison sentence for inciting racial hatred, Ms. Connolly has become a charged symbol in a debate over whether Britain is suppressing free speech. Last month, an appeals court refused to reduce her sentence, drawing angry protests from her defenders, mainly on the political right.
Ms. Connolly's arrest came during a fevered period after the killing of three young girls by a British son of Rwandan migrants, which ignited anti-immigrant riots across the country. She is one of thousands of people arrested in Britain each year for sending or posting offensive messages, which can include those that are 'indecent or grossly offensive' if they are intended to cause distress to the recipient.
Critics, including Vice President JD Vance and Elon Musk, accuse Britain of backsliding in the age of social media. They point to a thicket of laws, some old, some new, combined with overly zealous policing, and a perception, on the right and the left, that law enforcement is biased against their points of view.
Britain, they say, is restricting speech in ways that affect 'not just the British,' as Mr. Vance put it in February in an Oval Office meeting with Prime Minister Keir Starmer, 'but also affect American technology companies and, by extension, American citizens.'
Mr. Starmer gives no ground when asked to respond to Mr. Vance's claim that 'free speech, I fear, is in retreat.'

Kristi Noem Slams South Park's ‘Petty' Portrayal of Her: ‘It's So Lazy to Make Fun of Women for How They Look'
No surprise here: Kristi Noem isn't thrilled with her unflattering portrayal on the most recent episode of South Park. The United States Secretary of Homeland Security called in to Glenn Beck's radio show on Thursday to share her thoughts on the Aug. 6 episode, in which an animated Noem recruited mild-mannered elementary school guidance counselor Mr. Mackey into joining ICE. More from TVLine South Park Savages ICE and Kristi Noem, Sends Trump to Mar-a-Lago - Read Recap South Park Premiere Delivers 6 Million Viewers, Best 18-49 Share Since 1999 Save the Dates: South Park Sets Return, Kelly Clarkson's NBC Series and More In addition to being ruthlessly racist, South Park's version of Noem had a penchant for shooting puppies — a nod to Noem's real-life memoir, in which she recalled killing her young dog Cricket after he was deemed too 'aggressive.' The show also gave Noem a melting face, which required an entire team to reapply each time it fell off. 'It never ends, but it's so lazy to constantly make fun of women for how they look,' Noem said to Beck. 'It's always the liberals and the extremists who do that. If they wanted to criticize my job, go ahead and do that, but clearly they can't. They just pick something petty like that.' Despite her strong opinions, Noem claims that she didn't watch the episode, as she was otherwise occupied 'going over budget numbers and stuff.' One person who likely did watch this week's South Park was Vice President JD Vance, who responded to his own portrayal by posting 'Well, I've made it' on X. The episode reimagined Mar-a-Lago as a Fantasy Island-esque retreat, with President Donald Trump as Mr. Roarke and Vance as Tattoo. Noem's displeasure with South Park comes two weeks after the White House released a statement regarding Trump's portrayal in the season premiere. 'The Left's hypocrisy truly has no end,' White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers said in response to Trump's portrayal as a whiny-voiced, flappy-headed, Satan-loving, small-membered dictator. 'For years, they have come after South Park for what they labeled as 'offense' content, but suddenly they are praising the show,' the statement continued. 'Just like the creators of South Park, the Left has no authentic or original content, which is why their popularity continues to hit record lows. This show hasn't been relevant for over 20 years and is hanging on by a thread with uninspired ideas in a desperate attempt for attention. President Trump has delivered on more promises in just six months than any other president in our country's history — and no fourth-rate show can derail President Trump's hot streak.' Bid to increase sentence of Bhim Kohli's teenage killer to be heard next week
A bid to have the sentence of a teenage boy who killed elderly dog walker Bhim Kohli increased is due to be heard at the Court of Appeal on Wednesday. Mr Kohli, 80, was punched and kicked, slapped in the face with a shoe and racially abused in an attack in Franklin Park, Braunstone Town, near Leicester, on September 1 last year, and died the next day. The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to seven years' custody in June, when he was aged 15. The Attorney General's Office (AGO) announced in July that the Solicitor General, Lucy Rigby, had referred the sentence to the Court of Appeal under the unduly lenient sentence scheme. Court listings show that the bid to increase the sentence is due to be heard at the Court of Appeal in London on Wednesday, with the boy also seeking to appeal against his sentence at the same hearing. The boy was convicted of manslaughter, but cleared of murder, following a trial at Leicester Crown Court. He was convicted alongside a 13-year-old girl, who encouraged the attack by filming parts of it while laughing. The girl had filmed a series of video clips in which Mr Kohli was hit with the shoe by the balaclava-clad boy and another where the elderly man lay motionless on the ground. Mr Kohli's children found him lying on the ground in agony when he told his daughter that he had been called a 'P***' during the attack. The girl, who also cannot be named, was sentenced to a three-year youth rehabilitation order by Mr Justice Turner, but her sentence has not been referred to the Court of Appeal. After the sentencing, Mr Kohli's daughter, Susan Kohli, said she was 'angry and disappointed' at the sentences, stating that she believed they did not 'reflect the severity of the crime they committed'. Mid Leicestershire MP Peter Bedford and the MP for South Leicestershire, Alberto Costa, also wrote to the AGO asking for the sentences to be reviewed. A spokesperson for the AGO said last month that Ms Rigby was 'appalled by this violent, cowardly attack on an innocent man'.

JD Vance goes fishing — for trout — with UK's Lammy
Vice President JD Vance on Friday cast a few lines out when trout-fishing with British Foreign Secretary David Lammy while in England to discuss US-UK relations, Gaza and Ukraine. While the veep and Lammy didn't catch any fish, Vance's three kids were with him — and they all did. 'Unfortunately, the one strain on the special relationship is that all of my kids caught a fish, but the foreign secretary and I did not,' the VP quipped. 3 Vice President JD Vance and British Foreign Secretary David Lammy fish in the grounds of Chevening House in England on Friday. POOL/AFP via Getty Images 3 Vance and Lammy have been friends for years. REUTERS Vance said he and Lammy first became friends when he was a US senator and Lammy took the time to visit with him during a trip to DC. 'Obviously, we come from sort of different political spectrums, but he was, he was kind enough to make time on a visit to DC,' the veep told reporters. 'We got to know each other a little bit then and just kept on seeing each other. And our families enjoy each other's company very much, which always helps.' The US-UK relationship has been blooming under President Trump. The UK was the first country to strike a trade deal with the US, and Trump recently went to Scotland to golf and meet with Prime Minister Keir Starmer to iron out more details of the deal. Trump is set to go back to the UK in September to attend his second state dinner there at the invitation of King Charles. But Starmer also indicated in July that the UK would move to recognize a Palestinian state in September if Israel doesn't change its humanitarian treatment of Gaza — creating tension with the Trump administration, which has said it would not recognize Palestine. 'Obviously, the United Kingdom is going to make its decision. We have no plans to recognize a Palestinian state,' Vance said. 'I don't know what it would mean to really recognize a Palestinian state, given the lack of a functional government there.' 3 Vance and Lammy last saw each other on the VP's trip to Rome. Getty Images Vance also doubled down on his commitment to free speech, saying the West got 'too comfortable with censoring' under the Biden administration. 'I've raised some criticism because concerns about our friends on this side of the Atlantic,' he said of censorship. 'But the thing that I'd say to the people of England or anybody else, to David, is many of the things that I worry most about were happening in the United States from 2020 to 2024. I just don't want other countries to follow us down what I think was a very dark path under the Biden administration.' Vance is also expected to visit US troops on his trip to the UK, a source familiar told The Post.
