Sekhukhune United would have been disappointed to miss out on continental football after finishing fourth in the Betway Premiership last season. But Ba Bina Noko appear content with their current squad and are opting for continuity ahead of the new campaign.
The club, which plays their home matches at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane despite being based in Bedfordview, Johannesburg, have extended the contracts of five key players as they look to remain among the top performers in the elite league.
Captain Linda Mntambo and vice-captain Daniel Cardoso have both signed new deals after their contracts expired at the end of June — a clear indication that Sekhukhune are looking to build around the veteran leadership of the 35- and 36-year-olds respectively.
Also staying on are Chibuike Ohizu, Tresor Tshibwabwa and Vusimusi Ncube, who will all be central to coach Eric Tinkler's ambitions of turning Sekhukhune into a top-three side and returning to continental competition. The club previously featured in Africa after reaching the Nedbank Cup final.
However, there is one notable departure. Ivorian international goalkeeper Badra Ali Sangare has left the club following the expiry of his contract at the end of June. The 2021 Africa Cup of Nations winner had been a key figure for Sekhukhune since joining in 2022, playing a vital role in their rise as a competitive outfit.
The club confirmed his exit on Tuesday morning with a heartfelt message:
'(Tuesday) we say goodbye to our shot-stopper, Badra Ali Sangare, who joined Babina Noko on July 1, 2022. Your safe hands, big saves and fearless heart made us proud every time you stepped on the pitch.
'Our name echoed across the whole of Africa when you collected your coveted gold medal as an African champion. You'll always be part of this family. We wish you nothing but success in your next chapter.'
Sekhukhune will also be hoping their next chapter is smoother than the last. The club endured a season of instability, cycling through four coaches.

Orlando Pirates: Appollis arrival intensifies Mofokeng exit talks

Orlando Pirates have announced the arrival of Polokwane City attacker Oswin Appollis after a year-long pursuit – a week after signing AmaZulu FC winger Tshepang Moremi. This comes amid growing speculation of a Relebohile Mofokeng exit, who has garnered interest from MLS club FC Cincinnati, Ah Ahly, and Zamalek FC. Furthermore, another factor throwing fuel to the fire is the Mofokeng's father, Sechaba, who revealed his wish to see the Orlando Pirates star in Europe new season. You can be certain he will be relaying this information directly to Mofokeng, who will presumably like the thought of chopping it up with the world's best. 'My biggest wish is to see Rele overseas in 2025/2026. I'm praying every day. I don't want to see him in the Betway Premiership again this season. I know God will answer my prayers,' Sechaba said, intensifying speculation of his son's Orlando Pirates exit. '[Whether it's in] Spain, England, Netherlands, France, Denmark, Switzerland — Rele can play. I believe that with all my heart. Take him to Barcelona? He can play. PSG? He can play. Any country. I'll be happy — but not Saudi Arabia,' he added. 'Not yet. He's still young. He needs to compete in UEFA competitions. If he goes to Saudi now, he won't experience that. Yes, he'd be rich — but happiness is more important. You can have all the money in the world, but if you're not happy, it's worthless.' Orlando Pirates have yet to comment on Mofokeng's future. The club rejected a R25.8 million bid in January – early signs of what's to come. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1. Can Kaizer Chiefs new trio spark a revival in the 2025/26 season

PORTUGUESE striker Flavio Silva was unvelied by Kaizer Chiefs to be a goal solution in the upcoming season. | @KaizerChiefs Image: @kaizerChiefs Kaizer Chiefs have taken their first bite at the transfer market, sinking their teeth into a new chapter with the unveiling of three fresh signings they hope will breathe life into their 2025/26 campaign. The Phefeni Glamour Boys, who wobbled and stumbled in every phase of the pitch last season, have moved with purpose to bring in left-back Nkanyiso Shinga, midfielder Ethan Chislett, and striker Flavio Silva—a trio they believe will anchor a revival. It's no secret that the season ahead must be different. It must be better. Amakhosi must avoid drifting into mid-table obscurity. At the very least, a strong finish inside the top half is expected—demanded, even. And with the transfer window still open, few would be surprised if more names are added to this growing list of reinforcements. Nasreddine Nabi returns for his second season at the helm—a captain now more familiar with the turbulent waters of Naturena. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ Having steadied the ship with a much-needed Nedbank Cup triumph last season, the task ahead grows only tougher. Improvement in the league is now non-negotiable, and with the CAF Confederation Cup also looming, the road ahead will demand clarity and results. Here we will have a closer look at the three new arrivals and what each could offer as Chiefs prepare for the new campaign. Nkanyiso Shinga Left back Khanyiso Shinga has joined Kaizer Chiefs and fans are thrilled. Image: Supplied Amakhosi had one of the worst defensive records last season, and much of their issues stemmed from their inability to consistently prevent goals—often disrupting any momentum they tried to build. The left-back position, like much of their defence, saw constant reshuffling. Bradley Cross was the initial trusted option, but his lack of both form and consistency led to changes. Bongani Sam, a former Orlando Pirates player, struggled with injuries, further complicating matters for Nabi. Shinga, 25, is expected to offer much more going forward and could form a new-look left-side partnership with Paseka Mako, who has also been linked with a move to Naturena. Together, they could be crucial in restoring order and confidence at the back. Flavio Silva After showing early faith in Ranga Chivaviro last season, Chiefs failed to see the returns they hoped for, and the striker has since been let go. Now, the arrival of Portuguese forward Flavio Silva, 29, signals a fresh start. A striker in the mould of Chivaviro, Silva carries a promise of a more polished finishing touch—something Amakhosi desperately lacked last season, when they managed only 25 goals in 28 league matches. He netted 39 goals in 78 appearances in Indonesia's Liga 1 and scored 13 times in 87 appearances in Portugal's second division. While the level of competition may be questioned, Silva's eye for goal and physical presence could prove a real asset. Ethan Chislett Chiefs welcome new players Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs announced on Tuesday they had completed the deal to sign midfielder Ethan Chislett. Sports department rubbishes Gayton McKenzie's alleged bias against Cape Town's F1 bid team

They said the BSC was 'vague' about stipulations around the deposit. In order to bid to host the F1, each group had to submit an application motivating their location as well as making a deposit of R10 million. CTGPSA wanted to pay the deposit with a promissory note, which is a legal document outlining their intended loan repayment structure. CTGPSA also raised concerns about the BSC's handling of the R10 million deposit, which was part of the bid application process. Cape Town has proposed a street-style circuit, similar to that of Monaco. CTGPSA, this week, suggested that the Minister of Sport Gayton McKenzie acted in the best interests of Kyalami's F1 bid and labelled the Bid Steering Committee (BSC) as a biased group, who also acted in Kyalami's interests. The Department of Sports, Arts and Culture ( DSAC) has called the allegations made by the Cape Town Grand Prix SA (CTGPSA) team as 'utterly baseless'. 'On 7 December 2024, Gayton McKenzie stated 'the race is going to happen at Kyalami' and this was before announcing the BSC, looking at other bids or doing economic assessments. The fact that minister McKenzie appointed the BSC cannot just be overlooked as trivial, especially given how things played out after this. 'Then, when the bid document was put out, we were given fewer than 10 days to submit our entire proposal, including a R10 million deposit – a bid to host a major global sporting event. Only after we pushed for an extension to encourage a fair process did an extension emerge. 'We respect the BSC and minister McKenzie and we want to work with them. But as a proudly South African bid, we hold fairness, accountability and a legacy for our country in high regard. We believe our plan offers the best shot at a successful, long-term F1 future on the African continent,' CTGPSA said. The group questioned how the BSC used the R10 million deposit, what triggered a refund, the timeframe of the refund, whether or not the funds would be held in an interest bearing account and if there was an audit trail. 'We feel alternative submissions received to be more comprehensive, viable and suited for the purpose,' was the response CTGPSA said it got from the BSC, which raised even more concerns. 'A payment of a deposit of R10 million to support an open bid submission should NOT be the determining factor as to whether a bid is considered or not, particularly when it does not make any changes to the economics of a bid." Stacey-Lee Khojane, spokesperson for the DSAC refuted CTGPSA's claims and said that all bids were judged fairly. 'The bid process was open to anyone who wished to submit a bid. All of the bids were judged fairly and objectively by the BSC. The minister was not a part of that process. Their allegations are utterly and totally baseless,' Khojane added. The BSC has acknowledged CTGPSA's remarks, but have not yet respond to Independent Media's enquiries about the allegations.
