SAFF U-19 Championships: India Edge Out Bangladesh In Thriller To Retain Title
Last Updated:
The blue colts claimed their second title on the trot with a 4-3 win over Bangladesh on penalties after the game ended tied at 1-1.
The Indian men's unit successfully defended the SAFF U-19 Championships crown with a win over Bangladesh at Arunachal Pradesh on Sunday, as the blue colts claimed their second title on the trot with a 4-3 win over Bangladesh on penalties after the game ended tied at 1-1.
India seized the lead in the second minute through captain Singamayum Shami before Bangladesh pegged their rivals back on level terms in the 61st minute through Mohamed Joy Ahamed. The hosts held their nerve to pip the visitors in the tie-breaker shootout to hold on to the crown.
India showcased utter dominance in front of a roaring Arunachal Pradesh crowd, winning 8-0 and 4-0 against Sri Lanka and Nepal, respectively, in the group stage, and 3-0 against the Maldives in the semifinal en route to the championship clash. Bangladesh made it to the summit clash with a 2-1 win over Nepal in the semis, only to fall at the final hurdle to Bibiano Fernandes' men.
India had come flying out of the blocks. Within two minutes, they were ahead. Awarded a free-kick from over 30 yards out, Shami spotted the Bangladesh keeper slightly out of position and went for goal. His curling strike was pinpoint, and even though Mahin got a hand to it, the power behind the effort carried it into the net.
India rode the momentum, dominating possession and pushing Bangladesh on the back foot. Their passing was crisp, their movement sharp, and their wings once again proved their most potent weapon. In the 16th minute, Omang Dodum sliced through the defence with a solo run and was nearly in for a second, but Mahin made a vital save to keep Bangladesh in the contest.
Those missed chances would come back to haunt India.
Bangladesh, rattled at first, grew into the game. They closed down spaces, cut off India's passing channels, and slowly turned the tide. By half-time, they had begun to threaten with set-pieces, but India's backline stood firm.
The breakthrough came in the 61st minute. A chaotic corner sparked a scramble in the box, and Md Joy Ahamed pounced on the loose ball, firing it past Suraj Singh to level the match. It was the first goal India had conceded in the tournament, and it came at the worst possible moment.
From there, both teams pressed for a winner, but the game turned cagey and physical. The final third became a battlefield, and clear-cut chances were few and far between.
With the whistle blowing for full time, it all came down to the tie-breaker. And India captain Shami rose to the occasion a second time to bury the final penalty into the net and send his team and the crowd into delirium.

Kuldeep Yadav Out, No Gill Or Nair At No. 3: Gautam Gambhir Sent Blunt India XI Message
Quick Read Summary is AI generated, newsroom reviewed Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's retirements have thrown fresh challenges to head coach Gautam Gambhir. KL Rahul's recent performances suggest he will open alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal in the lineup. A T20 World Cup-winning ex-Indian player has advised the team management against picking Kuldeep Yadav. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli 's Test retirements have given India plenty to ponder ahead of the upcoming Test series against England, starting June 20. Ever since the squad was announced, a lot has been said and written about how India could lineup for the first Test in Leeds. Some of the India stars were in action recently, playing two unofficial Tests against the England Lions. In the second game at Northampton, KL Rahul smashed a century in the first innings, before following it up with another 50-plus score, all but cementing his place as one of the openers. Former India opener Robin Uthappa has urged head coach Gautam Gambhir to stick with Rahul as opener, alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal. He also vouched for the inclusion of southpaw Sai Sudharsan, pushing captain Shubman Gill to no. 4 and Karun Nair to five, respectively. "For me, I want to start stronger right at the top, and I would want KL Rahul to open there. With the kind of success he has gotten there, with just the way he batted in Australia, and the way he has batted in the past in England augurs well for India to get him to open the batting," Uthappa said on Star Sports. "At No. 3, I would love to see someone like Sai Sudharsan because of how technically right he is, and the potential he possesses as what we feel and believe he can do and achieve in Test cricket. No. 4, Shubman Gill for sure. My No. 5 would be Karun Nair because you want a little bit of experience there," he added. Uthappa picked Rishabh Pant as his wicketkeeper and Ravindra Jadeja as the lone spinner. "No. 6 - Rishabh Pant, I love him at No. 6. I think that's his sweet spot. At No. 7, I will have Nitish Kumar Reddy because he is a proper fast-bowling all-rounder, your fourth fast-bowling option," he explained. He also picked Nitish Kumar Reddy to add more depth to the batting, thus ignoring Kuldeep Yadav. "I will have Jadeja. Again, increased depth, scores runs, and has scored runs in England as well in Test cricket. So I will have him at No. 8," he concluded. In the pace department, Uthappa picked Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Prasidh Krishna.

"Feel Sad The Way Virat Kohli's Gone": Ravi Shastri Grills BCCI, Triggers Fresh Debate
Former India coach Ravi Shastri feels Virat Kohli's Test retirement could have been handled better as he deserved a proper farewell and said he would have reinstated him as captain after the Australia series. Kohli called time on his Test career last month, finishing with 123 matches, 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85, including 30 centuries. "When you go, that's when people realise how big a player he was. I feel sad that he is gone, the way he is gone. I think it could have been handled better, there should have been more communication," Shastri said in a video shared by SonyLiv on social media. Kohli's decision came just days before the Indian squad for the five-Test series against England was to be announced. Shastri, who coached India during their historic Test series wins in Australia under Kohli's leadership, said he would have reinstated him as captain after India's 1-3 loss to Australia earlier this year. "If I had anything to do with it, I would have made him captain, straightaway after Australia," Shastri said. Following Kohli's retirement and skipper Rohit Sharma's exit from the format, selectors appointed Shubman Gill as captain for the England series, which begins on June 20. India's Test squad for England series: Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (vc), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav. England squad for first Test vs India: Shoaib Bashir, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Sam Cook, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Jamie Overton, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jamie Smith (wk), Ben Stokes (capt), Josh Tongue, Chris Woakes.
