Israeli forces kill Palestinian basketball star in Gaza aid centre shooting
Shaalan, 40, was killed at an aid distribution site near Khan Younis while attempting to secure food and medicine for his sick daughter, Maryam, and the rest of his family.
According to local media, Maryam suffers from kidney failure and severe blood poisoning.
Before his death, Shaalan had repeatedly appealed for help in securing proper medical treatment for her.
Nicknamed al-Zilzal - Arabic for "The Earthquake" - Shaalan was a well-known figure in Palestinian sports, having played for several local teams including Khadamat Al-Bureij, Khadamat Al-Maghazi, and Khadamat Khan Younis, as well as representing the national team.

Images circulating online show mourners gathered around Shaalan's body, which was wrapped in the Palestinian flag with flowers laid atop the shroud.
Shaalan is one of three members of the Palestinian sports community killed in the past 24 hours, alongside Salem al-Shaer, 26, head of the equipment department at Rafah Youth Club, and Ahmed al-Jawrani, 40, a former star of Al-Salah Sports Club.
Israeli forces have killed at least 670 Palestinian athletes since the genocide in Gaza began nearly two years ago, according to Palestinian sports officials.

Earlier this month, Israeli forces killed former football star Suleiman al-Obeid, nicknamed "Palestinian Pele". He was also killed while queuing at an aid distribution site run by the US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF).
Israeli forces have killed more than 2,000 Palestinians at GHF sites since late May.
The GHF launched a controversial aid distribution mechanism on 27 May following nearly three months of an Israeli blockade on the entry of humanitarian assistance into the Gaza Strip.
Human rights groups have since accused it of being complicit in international crimes.

Donald Trump's fine of $464 million for civil fraud overturned by US court
A US court threw out Thursday a $464 million civil penalty against President Donald Trump imposed by a judge who found he fraudulently inflated his personal worth, calling the sum "excessive" but upholding the judgment against him. Judge Arthur Engoron ruled against Trump in February 2024, going on to order the mogul-turned-politician to pay $464 million, including interest, while his sons Eric and Don Jr. were told to hand over more than $4 million each. The judge found that Trump and his company had unlawfully inflated his wealth and manipulated the value of properties to obtain favourable bank loans or insurance terms. On Thursday, the Appellate Division of the New York Supreme Court upheld the verdict, but ruled that the size of the fine was "excessive" and that it "violates the Eighth Amendment of the United States Constitution." State Attorney General Letitia James, who brought the initial case, could now appeal to the state's highest court, the New York Court of Appeals. Following the initial verdict, Trump subsequently sought to challenge the civil ruling as well as the scale and terms of the penalty, which has continued to accrue interest while he appeals. He has repeatedly condemned the case and the penalty as being politically motivated.

Hamas fighters shock Israeli soldiers in Khan Younis ambush
A surprise Hamas attack in southern Gaza's Khan Younis on Wednesday shocked Israeli forces and prompted the military to brand the security breach a 'failure'. According to Israeli media, between 15-20 Hamas fighters emerged from a tunnel and separated into three groups: one to enter an unoccupied building, another to enter a building with soldiers stationed inside, and a third to lay down suppressive fire. The existence of the tunnel had been previously known to the military, and it had been partially demolished, the Times of Israel said. Fighting reportedly began when an Israeli officer standing on an upper floor opened fire on a fighter below. A close-quarter firefight lasting around five minutes ensued between the fighters and about 15 soldiers from Israel's Nahshon Battalion, which required backup from the air force and a tank. New MEE newsletter: Jerusalem Dispatch Sign up to get the latest insights and analysis on Israel-Palestine, alongside Turkey Unpacked and other MEE newsletters According to Ynet, three Hamas fighters were killed in the initial shootout, and 10 more as they retreated - most of the latter struck by drone fire. An image purportedly shows a tank driving over one of the fighters. According to the Israeli reporters, the battle lasted around three hours and no Israelis were killed. Three soldiers were wounded in the attack, the military said, one of them seriously. 'Exceptional' attack The military claimed in a statement that it found a stretcher Hamas fighters had brought with them, and that it was unclear "if it was meant for an abduction or for evacuating their casualties". Hamas, meanwhile, said its fighters 'eliminated several occupation soldiers', including 'the commander of a Merkava 4 tank, fatally wounding him'. It also said that a suicide bomber was successful in 'causing casualties' among a group of soldiers. Middle East Eye was unable to independently verify either the Israeli or Hamas claims. Hamas says Israel ignoring truce efforts by launching new Gaza assault Read More » Doron Kadosh, a journalist with Israel's army radio, described the complex attack as "exceptional". The attack comes as Israel launches a large-scale assault to seize and fully occupy Gaza City. The army said that 60,000 reserve soldiers will be called up for the assault. It has begun issuing expulsion orders to displace hundreds of thousands of Palestinians from their homes. According to the Gaza health ministry, Israeli forces killed at least 70 Palestinians on Wednesday. Overall, Israeli forces have killed more than 62,000 Palestinians since the genocide in Gaza began nearly two years ago, including at least 18,000 children. Meanwhile, 900 Israeli soldiers have been killed by Palestinian fighters in Gaza and during the 7 October 2023 Hamas-led attack on Israel.
