MCMC develops child protection rules under Online Safety Act 2025
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil stated that the MCMC is exploring mandatory AI-generated content labelling for service providers.
'This initiative aims to help users identify misleading or manipulated content, reducing the spread of harmful information online,' he said.
Service providers must also submit an online safety plan to ensure compliance with Act 866.
Fahmi addressed the issue in response to a question from Datuk Shamshulkahar Mohd Deli (BN-Jempol) regarding AI-generated content regulations.
He emphasised that Act 866 was enacted to strengthen online safety and regulate harmful material.
An Online Safety Committee will be formed to advise the MCMC on digital safety matters.
The committee will be led by the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) and include licensed service providers.
Fahmi also revealed that MCMC requested the removal of 439 deepfake-related fraudulent social media posts this year.
Of these, 417 were successfully taken down, with Facebook being the primary source. - Bernama

Shahelmey weighs GRS ticket after BN door ‘closes'

Kuala Lumpur: Sabah deputy chief minister Shahelmey Yahya is weighing the possibility of contesting under Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) in the upcoming state election, with his chances of standing again as a Barisan Nasional candidate possibly over. Shahelmey, who currently holds the Tanjung Keramat seat, said his decision would ultimately hinge on feedback from voters in the constituency. Advertisement 'I need to listen to the people in the area because they are the ones who will be voting. There is also the local machinery whose views I must consider. 'If the feedback is convincing, then we will make a decision,' he told FMT when met at the Parliament building. GRS chairman Hajiji Noor had earlier expressed confidence that Shahelmey could defend the seat under the coalition's banner. Shahelmey first won Tanjung Keramat on a BN ticket in 2020. However, his ties with BN have soured since March 2023, when Umno suspended him for six years for refusing to support the party's move to topple Hajiji. The rift widened last year after Sabah BN chief Bung Moktar Radin named Sabah Umno election director Jeffrey Noh as the coalition's candidate for Tanjung Keramat, effectively sidelining Shahelmey. '(It's as if) the door has closed,' Shahelmey said of his BN prospects. He said there had been no discussions with Sabah BN or coalition chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi regarding his candidacy. Shahelmey said his decision on whether to contest on a GRS ticket was further complicated by his position as Umno's Putatan MP. Under the anti-hopping law, he risks losing his parliamentary seat if he contests under a party other than BN as he won Putatan on a BN ticket in the 15th general election. 'That matter is quite technical. eSafety Commissioner proposed to tackle child bullying
KUALA LUMPUR: The government, through the Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister's Department, is studying the establishment of a cyberbullying tribunal and the appointment of an eSafety Commissioner, particularly to address bullying among children. The initiative is aimed at providing swift remedies for victims, rehabilitation for offenders, and stronger digital safety education. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said this formed part of the government's commitment to curb bullying through existing laws such as the Online Safety Act 2025 and recent amendments to the Penal Code, which introduced more comprehensive provisions. "Bullying, whether in schools or online, is never acceptable. "While five teenagers now face charges, they remain children under the law and must be protected under the Child Act 2001, including confidentiality, legal representation, and fair treatment," Azalina said in a statement today. She said the Madani government was committed to addressing bullying through the Online Safety Act 2025, amendments to the Penal Code, strengthened child protection laws such as Sexual Offences Against Children (2017–2023), the Child Witness (Amendment) Bill 2023, and the appointment of Suhakam Children's Commissioners. At the Asean Law Forum 2025 earlier, Azalina said the government may consider introducing a tribunal system to handle bullying cases, making punishments more rehabilitative and less punitive for minors. She referred to the Penal Code (Amendment) Act 2025, which introduced new Sections 507B to 507G specifically targeting bullying in any form, including online acts. "This is a concern especially when the perpetrators and victims of bullying are children. "The Child Act still applies," she said, adding that the cabinet would discuss whether a tribunal system is needed and whether a separate set of laws focusing more on rehabilitation than punishment should be introduced. It was reported that five teenagers are expected to be charged at the Kota Kinabalu Juvenile Court on Wednesday in connection with the bullying case involving the late Zara Qairina Mahathir, 13. Zara Qairina's case has attracted widespread public attention, with questions raised over the cause of her death and calls from various quarters for a thorough investigation.
