‘Like he never left': Bloomington man reunites with dog months after disappearance
Jason Mirous said he raised his dog, Jaxon, from the time he was just three weeks old.
'He was premature, barely eating out of a bottle,' Mirous said. 'He was my first child.'
Jaxon, a half red nose, half blue nose pit bull, became part of the family just before Mirous had his first child. But after welcoming his second baby into the family, space and time grew tight. Hoping to ensure Jaxon was cared for, Mirous asked a close friend to take him in temporarily.
'He had a bond with Jaxon, and it seemed like a good fit,' Mirous said.
Over time, communication with that friend began to fade. Mirous says he tried calling and texting with no response until one day he saw a troubling post on social media.
'His girlfriend posted that Jaxon was lost,' he said. 'I was confused because I'd been trying to reach them.'
After months of uncertainty and searching, Mirous spotted a post from McLean County Animal Control a dog named 'Jaxon,' spelled exactly how he used to spell it, was up for adoption.
'I rushed there the next morning,' he said. 'The moment he saw me, he lit up. It was like, 'Where have you been?''
Mirous learned Jaxon had been dropped off anonymously and had spent four months at the shelter. Despite being microchipped as a puppy, staff told him they couldn't find any records.
'That shocked me,' he said. 'They couldn't find the chip, but they somehow had his vaccination records from when he was a baby.'
While grateful for the reunion, Mirous is frustrated that he was never contacted before Jaxon was put up for adoption or neutered.
'If we had known he was there, we would've been at that pound the same day. He wouldn't have been there four months,' he said.
Now back home, Jaxon is adjusting a little more energetic and a little less obedient, but Mirous said their bond is stronger than ever.
'It's like he never left,' he said. 'He's not going anywhere this time. He's going to grow old and die with me.'

Service dog reunited with blind owner two months after being stolen from Chicago backyard
A loyal service dog has been reunited with its owner nearly three months after being stolen from a backyard in Chicago, officials say. Bam Bam, the 14-year-old tan and white Dachshund, was stolen from the yard in the Logan Square neighborhood of Chicago on June 5, according to a GoFundMe created to help find him. His owner, Angel Santiago, who is legally blind due to glaucoma, spent days walking miles and handing out flyers with the hope of finding his beloved friend and aid. Santiago told police that two unknown people entered through his gate and took the canine. Although he heard the disturbance and even grabbed one of the suspects in an attempt to stop him, the men were able to get away with Bam Bam. He believes the suspect he grabbed sounded like a teenager. Santiago said that he could hear Bam Bam barking as the men ran away with him. 'Let your eyes be mine and look out for Bam Bam for me, please. I beg of you to help me,' he wrote in a desperate plea on the fundraiser. The GoFundMe totalled almost $20,000 as concerned citizens looked to support the cause. A Facebook Page set up for the search effort led several flyer events, petitions, and meetups in the city to help find the dog. On August 12, a post read: 'We are incredibly grateful to be working with an amazing group of volunteers who are organizing walking routes and flyering to reach local residents who may not have heard Angel and Bam Bam's story.| Thankfully, after nearly three months of desperate searching, Bam Bam was found. On Tuesday evening, Chicago police said an unidentified man and woman dropped off a white-and-yellow dachshund mix at the 16th District police station. Police quickly confirmed the animal to be Bam Bam. Santiago, who is both blind and has Type 2 diabetes, rushed to the station to be reunited with Bam Bam, say police. The dog was reportedly in good health when it was recovered, police said. As it stands, no arrests have been made. A team of detectives is continuing to investigate the circumstances of how the dog ended up at the station. The pair who dropped off Bam Bam refused to hand over any information to the police before leaving, according to authorities.

Stolen service dog, Bam Bam, returned to blind man in Logan Square
A service dog stolen from a blind man in Logan Square was returned safely on Tuesday after an over two-month search. Chicago police confirmed an unidentified man and woman dropped off the dog at the 16th District police station around 8 p.m. Police said the dog appeared to be in good health. Bam Bam, a 14-year-old dachshund, was taken from Angel Santiago's yard near Monticello and Fullerton avenues on June 5. Santiago is legally blind from glaucoma. He told PETA organizers he heard two men enter his yard through his gate. He tried to intervene and was able to grab one of the suspects, but they got away with his dog. PETA and community groups offered a reward of up to $6,000 for the safe return of a dog. Since Bam Bam was taken, Santiago walked up to seven miles a day, handing out flyers and trying to call for his beloved pet. Police said the man and woman who returned the dog refused to give information to officers. Area Five detectives are investigating.
