Ranking the five best NBA landing spots for Wisconsin basketball star John Tonje
Former Wisconsin basketball star and All-American wing John Tonje has been making a name for himself at the NBA combine this past week, both in the measurement and skill drills.
Tonje played well during the event's second full scrimmage, scoring 17 points and totaling seven rebounds, two assists, one block, and one steal. Such a performance against a court full of NBA hopefuls can be an immense help as the standout wing works to rise up teams' draft boards.
Tonje is looking to become Wisconsin's fourth player drafted since 2015, when Frank Kaminsky and Sam Dekker each went in the first round, and first since 2022, when Johnny Davis went No. 10 overall. He's currently projected as a mid-second-round selection.
With the combine now complete and the 2025 NBA draft still over a month away, here is our ranking of Tonje's five best landing spots:
5. Denver Nuggets
The Denver Nuggets are the last team on this list simply because they've been among the best at getting the most out of upperclassmen college prospects. Some of those names include Christian Braun, former conference rival Jalen Pickett, Julian Strawther, and Hunter Tyson. The Nuggets are in win-now mode as Nikola Jokic continues to play like a world-class player. Adding another offensive depth piece like John Tonje could make a difference.
Key rotation players Michael Porter Jr. and Russell Westbrook have expiring contracts either this season or next, meaning they could be expensive to retain in addition to Jokic, Jamal Murray, Aaron Gordon, and Christian Braun. Taking a chance on a player like Tonje, who would fit the Porter Jr. scoring role extremely well, could be a savvy move for the Nuggets as they try and stay below the second apron salary cap. Plus, just think about how many highlight dunks and three-pointers Tonje could have if Jokic was passing to him.
There is a trend that you might be able to pick up on in this article. Most of the teams that are the best fits for John Tonje have had success developing older college prospects into quality NBA talent. One of the best franchises in that regard is the Miami Heat. In just the 2020s, the Heat have helped revitalize the careers of many four to five year college stars, including Duncan Robinson, Gabe Vincent, and Max Strus. John Tonje could fit into the Erik Spoelstra offense seamlessly, playing with some of the most underrated young talent in the Eastern Conference in Bam Adebayo, Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr., and Kel'el Ware. Since trading Jimmy Butler to the Warriors, the Heat are in need of a guard/forward who can create their own shot but also be a threat in the interior. Tonje fits that bill perfectly and would thrive in Miami from the jump.
3. Minnesota Timberwolves
The Minnesota Timberwolves are another NBA franchise that has utilized former Big Ten stars in their rotation. Both Iowa center Luka Garza and Illinois guard Terrence Shannon Jr. have found roles in Minnesota, next to superstar Anthony Edwards and other young pieces Jaden McDaniels and Naz Reid. The Timberwolves, who have made made back-to-back Western Conference Finals appearances for the first time in franchise history, could benefit from a sniper like John Tonje, since starters Julius Randle and Naz Reid are entering the final seasons of their contracts. Grabbing a veteran like Tonje late in the second round for cheap could make sense for a Timberwolves team that hopes to stay a contender for the years to come with Edwards at the helm.
2. Golden State Warriors
The Golden State Warriors have found success with multiple older former Big Ten players in Pat Spencer and Trayce Jackson-Davis, both of whom are key contributors in head coach Steve Kerr's rotation. John Tonje not only fits the three-point prowess that Kerr and the organization love, but he also brings a level of experience and size to a Warriors team that is extremely guard-oriented. The team could benefit from a bigger bodied, guard/forward in Tonje. Additionally, it's fun to imagine Tonje playing alongside future hall of famers Steph Curry, Draymond Green, and Jimmy Butler.
1. New York Knicks
This one feels like a no-brainer. The New York Knicks have established themselves as one of the best teams for player development in the NBA, with many former college stars, including Miles "Deuce" McBride and Tyler Kolek, finding roles on the team. In addition, former Badger Johnny Davis currently plays for the Westchester Knicks, and is off to the best start to a season of his professional career. An older prospect like John Tonje would fit well with the Knicks' offensive style of play and hard-working mindset.

Damson Idris Is Speeding With Confidence
WhenDamson Idrislogs onto our video call, his pearly white grin glistens from cheek to cheek — and rightfully so, the guy's got a lot to be beaming about right now. Earlier this year, he launched his own fine jewelry line, DIDRIS, under which he aims to create a legacy of timeless ice with hand-selected artisans and collaborators. He performed a trophy-worthyMet Galastunt, speeding down 5th Avenue in a custom Tommy Hilfiger racecar, pulling up to the esteemed steps icongnito-mode, and ripping off his glittering driver's suit in a spectacular grand reveal moment that will no doubt inspire future Halloween costumes. The theatrical display was prime promotion forF1: The Movie, the forthcoming film-of-the-summer in which the actor stars opposite Brad Pitt. And now, he's the face of Mr. Hilfiger's bespoke APXGP collection inspired by the racing pic. That's the sweet life of a movie star. InF1: The Movie, Idris plays Joshua Pearce, a one-to-watch rookie who's determined to prove himself to Pitt's more experienced racer, Sonny Hayes, both of whom drive for the fictional Team APXGP. In quite the synergetic move, the made-up squad is sponsored by Hilfiger's brand, meaning Idris' and Pitti's characters are decked out in the American fashioner's signature red, white, and blue designs as they attempt to earn the world's most prestigious motorsport's top title. It's movie magic that makes sense: Hifliger, in real life, has beeninvolved with Formula 1 for more than 30 years. In 1991, he established his first sponsorship with TeamLotus, for whom he provided bespoke uniforms during a three-season stretch. In 1998, Hilfiger became the official clothing sponsor forFerrari, a role he maintained for another four years. During a brief break from sponsoring the sport, he remained a loyal fan and even learned how to drive his own Ferrari Enzo at his former business partner and present-day Aston Martin Formula 1 team owner Lawrence Stroll's personal track. Then, in 2018, he made a glorious return to the racetrack as a sponsor of Mercedes-AMG, which he still sponsors today. 'Since I was a kid peeking through the fences at Watkins Glen racetrack, Formula 1 has been legendary to me. As F1 has opened its doors to new worlds like entertainment and fashion, the sport has become a cultural phenomenon,' said Hilfiger. 'F1: The Moviecaptures the cultural shift, setting a benchmark in what we call 'fashiontainment', where the future is being shaped.' In the spirit of 'fashiontainment,' Hilfiger took his movie partnership one step further, creating a full-blown AXGP collection for cinemaphiles and Paddock-trotters alike. The line is filled with everything from racer-inspired garments, like vegan leather racer jackets, moto-manic shirts, and red quilted jackets modeled after those seen in the film, to trackside silhouettes, including tailored Japanese denim and merino knit polos. Idris, the beacon for motorsport's fashion clan, fronts the collection's campaign, a visual depiction of the 'limitless confidence' required to make it on the Formula 1 circuit. Here, the actor discusses his crossroads with Hilfiger, his personal style, and his secrets to acquiring such fearlessness. You easily won the best entrance at this year's Met Gala. Can you talk to me about what it was like creating that moment with Tommy? It was surreal, man. So much time and effort went into that moment, and so many things could have gone wrong. During rehearsal, all these things were going wrong. The uniform would get caught on the brooch when they pulled it off me, or it would get stuck on my hand. I was underneath the helmet just praying that they would pull it away smoothly. But so many people loved that trick, and I think it's a testament to Tommy Hilfiger's ability to create iconic cultural moments. That's one that we all know is going to last forever. I've already seen a bunch of kids recreating it, wearing red suits underneath black bags and getting their friends to pull it off. It's become a thing now. It's absolutely going to be a Halloween costume. Exactly. The dress code at this year's Met Gala was 'Tailored For You.' It's no secret that your look was about promoting your forthcoming movie, but I'm curious, did you feel a personal connection to the design, too? The first time I ever heard about the dandy was through my sister. She did a documentary on the dandies of Congo when I was a kid, so I always felt close to the idea because it was associated with Africa, which is obviously my heritage. So, when I found out that Black dandyism would be the theme at this year's Met Gala, I completely locked in. I had so many ideas. I had just launched my jewelry brand, DIDRIS, and my first collection was filled with green pieces, so doing an oxblood suit with Tommy Hilfiger to complement my designs felt like a no-brainer. We built on those color palettes and paid homage to both the theme and Tommy's heritage, and I was super happy with the result. What has it been like building a relationship with Tommy Hilfiger, not only through the Met Gala, but also through his sponsorship of the film and your starring in this campaign? What is your favorite thing about the guy himself? The thing I love about Tommy Hilfiger, the man and his label, is that he's all about collaboration. It's not just, 'You're an actor, be a mannequin for our brand.' It's really an exploration of how we can work together so that not only are both parties happy, but the result is iconic. We're building a relationship that is anything but momentary. It's something that we can imagine in the future. Tommy Hilfiger really looks at unique ways to work with people, so my hat's off to him and his team, from the Met Gala to this new campaign, and to some of the fun we've had with Formula 1 in the past. The first time I linked up with Tommy was during Formula 1 in Miami and Las Vegas. His team told me to bring all my friends and that they wanted to make it a moment to remember. It was so insane and again, such an iconic moment. 'I love suits, of course. But I also love just being swagged off, showing up with my friends, and looking fly.' There's a red quilted jacket in this collection that is modeled after the exact silhouette that you wear in the movie. Considering Tommy's presence on the Formula 1 track in real life, did wearing his designs in the film help you get into character? It was really all about Joshua Pearce. When building his character, I knew that as a rookie, he was a cool rookie, and Tommy Hilfiger's designs felt so seamless for my role. I also just love how so many elements of the movie tie into this collection. So when people watch the film, the connection to this line will make complete sense. I'm expecting this collection to sell out like hotcakes. What's your favorite piece in the collection? My favorite piece is actually the leather jacket. I've worn it probably too many times. Summer is approaching, and I'm still rocking it. It speaks to Joshua. It speaks to F1. It also speaks to me, Damson. It interwines everything that this moment represents. How would you describe your personal style? Luxury. A friend of mine once said that. 'Damson, you're so luxury.' When I linked up with Tommy Hilfiger, I wanted the brand to move in that direction. I wanted it to feel innovative, in the sense that it could cater to different occasions. The collection really does embody my personal style. I love suits, of course. But I also love just being swagged off, showing up with my friends, and looking fly. What was it like shooting the campaign? Do you have any favorite memories from being on set? We were in Johannesburg, which was brilliant. I was filming a movie in Cape Town, so we got the plane over. We were on a South African racetrack, which was also brilliant. It was hot, and it was good to be around some heat. We were all just having fun, and I loved how they let me bring in my DIDRIS jewelry as well. It was honestly a day full of laughter. 'The biggest piece of advice I would give is to only do things if they make you happy.' The campaign is all about championing the 'limitless confidence' that it takes to make it on the Formula 1 circuit. What are some things that make you feel confident? Having people who believe in me makes me feel confident, whether they are my family, my team, or even just the people who love the art that I give to the world. They make me understand my responsibility, and they make me step into being a leader. What advice would you offer to someone who might be struggling with their confidence? Man, there are so many things. The biggest piece of advice I would give is to only do things if they make you happy. People are always trying to impress others, and in doing so, they often don't get the result that they want. That process knocks your confidence. It makes you insecure. But if you know that you are at peace with yourself, and if you know that what you are doing is true to you, you are always going to be confident. That's how I live. Final question. Can we expect to see more race-inspired Hilfiger looks on the Formula 1 press run? 100%. The movie's out in about a month, and we're traveling all around the world. We're going to be everywhere from Mexico to Abu Dhabi to London to New York, and Tommy Hilfiger's going to be there right along the way. You'll see a lot of this collection, and you're going to see a lot of new stuff that's really fly, too. Tommy Hilfiger's APXGP collection will be available to shoponlineand in the brand's stores on June 3.

Trout bounces back from injury with 3 more hits and his 2nd career homer at Fenway Park
BOSTON (AP) — It hasn't taken Mike Trout long to regain his form after missing a month with a bruised left knee. Trout had three more hits on Monday night, including a 454-foot homer that was the longest at Fenway Park this year, in the Los Angeles Angels' 7-6 victory over the Boston Red Sox — his second three-hit game in three starts since returning from the injured list on Friday. 'Anybody that knows Mike Trout shouldn't be surprised,' Angels manager Ron Washington said. 'Mike Trout can still do a lot of things that a lot of people can't do. And he's showing that.' Trout hit a three-run homer in the first inning and singled in his next two at-bats. In the seventh, he grounded into a double play but said he had no problem with his left knee as he tried to beat the relay. In all, the 11-time All-Star and three-time AL MVP is 8 for 14 since coming off the IL to raise his batting average from .179 to .225. It was only his second homer in 35 career games at Fenway Park. Trout, 33, said he was able to work on his swing while he was out, though he was limited to 30-40 swings per day. The break helped him reset some bad habits he had developed, he said. The three hits on Monday gave Trout 1,675 in his career and moved him into second place on the franchise list, surpassing Tim Salmon. Garret Anderson holds the Angels record with 2,368. Zach Neto homered leading off the game, Trout added a three-run shot and Jo Adell put one over the Green Monster to make it 6-0 — all in the first. It was the first time in the 114-year history of Fenway Park that a visiting team has hit three homers in the first inning, according to 'Anytime you set records in a stadium like this, it's pretty special,' Trout said. 'It's pretty crazy.' ___

'I Think ESPN Is Going To F*** The Show Up': Bill Simmons Didn't Hold Back When Expressing His Worries About Inside The NBA's New Era
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Credit: TNT/The Ringer This past weekend marked the end of an era in sports broadcasting. As the Indiana Pacers clinched their first trip to the NBA Finals in over two decades, it was all shown during Inside The NBA's final broadcast on TNT. The long-running show had been on the network since 1989, and it will resume on ESPN this fall as part of a historic deal. While some may be happy the series will still be on the 2025 TV schedule, longtime sports analyst Bill Simmons isn't optimistic about the new era of the beloved basketball show. Advertisement Inside The NBA has long been known for its wild antics, which occasionally make host Ernie Johnson feel like a "rogue traffic cop." But, during an installment of The Bill Simmons Podcast, the eponymous host claimed that the move to ESPN could ruin the show. Surprisingly, it's not because he's of the thinking that the Disney-owned network would try to keep Charles Barkley from saying wild stuff, but because of the way it runs commercials: I think ESPN is going to fuck the show up. I don't care if I get they completely change how they do commercials. The show's going to be different and people are going to be pissed. And Barkley and those guys are going to be pissed and I think it's going to go badly. It's funny that Bill Simmons knew he'd make waves with his comment, as he was likely aware of the immense pull that he has in sports broadcasting. Of course, it's still just an opinion, and do we really believe Charles Barkley would've renounced his retirement if he thought Inside The NBA would flop on ESPN? Probably not, but it's always possible that Barkley and the rest of the Inside crew weren't thinking about the fundamental way the show could change beyond censorship issues. Bill Simmons went into that, noting the way ESPN currently conducts its NBA coverage, and how it would need to change to be closer to what's been seen on TNT for decades: The only way it doesn't go badly is if they do the commercials and they give them the lengthy segments that you need to have that show work. They're going to have to change how they do it. They just paid so much for the NBA, that if they don't do that and they do these same short, terrible segments that you're about to see in the Finals, where it's like a one-and-a-half-minute halftime and a twenty-minute pregame. If they do that, they're going to fuck the show up and everybody's going to be mad. If they mess with any piece of this, everybody's going to be mad. All this being said, fans have yet to see a single episode of Inside The NBA on ESPN. There's even a part of me that feels like Bill Simmons is only putting his opinion out into the world so that someone making decisions on how the program will run next season and can react appropriately to ensure no one is mad. Advertisement More On Inside The NBA Shaquille O'Neal on Inside The NBA on TNT Charles Barkley, Shaq And The Inside The NBA Crew Got Family Photos Done, And They Went All Out While Bill Simmons is right that ESPN's basketball coverage does thrive on brevity and is very commercial-heavy, the network does house shows with long segments. First Take, The Pat McAfee Show, and others have very long blocks where people are talking. Maybe some of those segments can get just a bit shorter so that the network can let Ernie Johnson, Shaquille O'Neal, Kenny Smith and Charles Barkley do their thing. It'll be several months before we see what ESPN does, as Inside The NBA is officially off the air until the new NBA season kicks off in late October. I want to stay optimistic that the show will remain as fun as it has been in past years, with more moments like Shaq running to the bathroom and getting roasted by the rest of the panel. Until I'm proven otherwise, that's where my head is at, and I'm going to hope for the best. For now, know that the NBA Finals kick off on ABC on Thursday, June 5th at 8:30 p.m. ET. It should be an exciting series for those who love basketball, so be sure to check it out and wonder what Charles Barkley might have to say about it during the championship series.
