Woman gets suspended term over hammer attack at Japan university campus

Japan Today27-06-2025
A Japanese court has sentenced a woman to three years in prison, suspended for four years, for injuring eight students in a hammer attack at a university campus in suburban Tokyo.
The court on Friday found Yoo Ju Hyun, a 23-year-old South Korean, guilty of injuring the students on Jan. 10 at Hosei University's Tama Campus in Machida. The presiding judge put her actions down to a mental disorder she was suffering.
The series of attacks on defenseless students were "dangerous and shocking," said Presiding Judge Keita Nakajima in handing down the ruling at the Tokyo District Court's Tachikawa branch.
Yoo, who was a second-year student in the university's Faculty of Social Sciences at the time, had claimed she was bullied and insulted by some students.
Nakajima said while it cannot be said that there was no bullying at all, there was no evidence that the eight victims, some of which suffered head injuries, had insulted her.
However, the judge said that Yoo's actions were influenced to a considerable extent by an obsessive-compulsive disorder and other factors.

4 Japanese among suspects nabbed in bust of fraud HQ in Cambodia

CAMBODIA (TR) – Authorities in the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh have announced the bust of Chinese fraud group's headquarters. Among the suspects were Japanese nationals, reports TBS News (July 24). According to authorities, law enforcement on Wednesday searched an apartment complex believed to be the base of a Chinese fraud group and arrested 28 people, including four Japanese nationals. A large number of smartphones, SIM cards and computers believed to have been used for fraud were seized from the base. Handguns and drugs were also seized. In Cambodia, where many international crime organizations have flowed in, Prime Minister Hun Manet has ordered the eradication of fraud bases. From June 27 to July 22, police uncovered more than 130 operations nationwide and arrested more than 3,000 people, including Chinese nationals. In May 2025, authorities arrested 29 Japanese nationals in Poipet in the northwest for involvement in tokushu sagi , meaning specialized fraud. Perpetrators of this crime target a victim over the telephone and impersonate an authority figure or relative to defraud money from them. The Japanese Embassy said it is 'currently investigating' the matter.

One case of death was reported. A patient killed a male partner through drug poisoning by putting fentanyl patches on him. "Though fentanyl has not spread in Japan, we will continue to police any case strictly," an NPA official said. [Copyright The Jiji Press, Ltd.] Jiji Press

75 women arrested for prostitution at Kabukicho park

Seventy-five women were arrested for street prostitution near Okubo Park in Kabukicho district in Tokyo's Shinjuku Ward during the first half of this year, more than double from the same period in 2024, police announced on July 24. Regarding motivation, more than 40 percent of the women cited debts related to host clubs and similar expenses. According to police, the average age of the arrested women was 25, with nine of them being teenagers—a sharp increase from just one last year. Nearly 80 percent were current or former workers in the sex industry, and six were university students. Some women reported engaging in prostitution due to financial hardships, prompting authorities to coordinate support efforts with welfare organizations. Authorities have also noted a troubling rise in women seeking out tourists visiting Japan. Four women in their 20s were arrested on suspicion of soliciting sex from non-Japanese men near the park on July 22. The women admitted to the charges, saying they felt safer focusing on foreigners because they were unlikely to be undercover police officers. They also explained that they had turned to prostitution to repay debts from host clubs and claimed working independently was a quicker way to earn money than working in sex parlors. The four suspects allegedly waited for potential clients—mostly Taiwanese men—between May 14 and June 19 in the neighborhood within the well-known nightlife district. Police have received around 50 reports likely connected to the group since last October, possibly involving disputes with customers. Investigations revealed the women used online group chats to share photos of undercover police officers and other information to avoid arrest. Transaction rates ranged from 20,000 yen ($135) to 30,000 yen, with one woman reportedly serving an average of five clients per day and earning more than 110 million yen over two years. Authorities have expressed alarm over the rise in tourists visiting the park for these services and are considering issuing warnings at immigration checkpoints.
