‘By international standards, only only 5% instructors are trained'

Paragliding In the past year, five people have died in paragliding accidents across popular tourist spots like Bir, Manali, Mandi, Dharamshala, and Goa. The latest incident – a zipline mishap in Manali – involved a 12-year-old girl from Nagpur who was injured in a fall. The family has settled the matter, and the police confirmed no case was registered. Despite multiple fatalities over the years, including more than 20 deaths in the past five to seven years, the pattern remains unchanged: temporary bans, magisterial probes, and swift resumptions. Though SOPs exist, safety enforcement is weak and trained professionals are few. Tourists often assume protocols are in place and rarely verify them. As the injured girl's father said, 'We assumed that safety checks and emergency systems must be in place.' Adventure sports operators urge tourists to take charge – ask questions, inspect gear, verify certifications, and avoid relying on cab drivers for activity suggestions. 'Before trusting any operator, verify credentials' In peak summer, when tourists flood Manali's slopes, dozens of uncertified freelancers slip into harnesses and start running the show. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Switch to UnionBank Rewards Card UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Operators admit that during the rush, most of the operators end up hiring anyone who can strap on a belt and shout instructions. ' Kam se kam ek inspector toh hona chahiye har jagah ,' one operator says. ' Par hote kahaan hain ? There are supposed to be safety checks, certified instructors, regulatory inspection – but in reality, there's no one watching,' he adds. Kamlesh, a tour operator in Rishikesh, adds, 'Whenever an accident occurs, the pilot in a paragliding crash or the person conducting motorsports is going to try and save their own life first. So before trusting any random person asking you to 'run and jump' with them, verify his credentials.' 'Activity toh aadhe ghante ki hai, why should I waste ₹500 for insurance?' Another tour operator lays it out plainly, ' Koi zabardasti adventure tourism nahi karata. It's your choice. You sign a waiver, or you don't. If you don't sign, you're not allowed to do the activity.' The waiver, he explains, makes you responsible if something goes wrong. 'Adventure insurance hota hai around ₹300 to 500. But most tourists refuse. They say, 'Activity toh aadhe ghante ki hai , why should I waste ₹500?' What they don't realise is that if they did sign up, they could claim ₹3 to 5 lakh if something goes wrong. But only a certified adventure company can do that,' says Negi. 'Jab taxi wale se puchte hain tourists ki kahan paragliding karein, toh kya standard hoga?' Yograj Negi, who has been involved in the adventure tourism business for years, shares that safety is the last priority for tourists. 'Safety toh concern hai hi nahi yahan ke tourist spots pe. Log yeh soch ke kar lete hain (adventure sports) ki agar itne log kar rahe hain, toh unsafe kaise ho sakta hai ? But it's only safe if you do it with proper equipment and trained instructors,' he says. Negi warns that tourists need to take more initiative. 'Ask anyone who's paraglided in Manali and chances are they weren't given a proper walk through.' he says. He shares that there are over 50 ziplines between Manali and Lahaul. 'Zipline ka case hum pehli baar dekh rahe hain, but hum jaante hain ki jab taxi wale se poochte ho ki kahan paragliding karein , toh uske paas kya standard hoga ?' Things to know before you go paragliding Tourists should ask the pilot to explain each step of the safety inspection and understand the purpose of each piece of equipment – including harnesses, helmets, wings, emergency parachutes, and quick-release connectors. Ensure your harness and helmet fit properly. Pay attention to details such as leg loops and chin straps. Season and Weather Conditions: Always check with the agency. October– November is ideal for long flights, May–June is suited for short-duration flights. Weight Limits: Inform pilot of your weight. The ideal range is 30–90kg Medical Conditions: Avoid flying if pregnant, or if you have heart or other medical conditions Pilot Credentials: Verify your pilot's experience and license. Ask about the condition of the glider Operator Legitimacy: Ensure the agency is certified by state authority Avoid prioritising Cost over safety: Do not opt for cheaper services that cut corners on safety The risk with paragliding  Gliders typically have a safe life of 300-400 flights, but some pilots continue to use them for over 1,000 hours, compromising safety  Long paragliding flights are not advisable during May-June due to thermal conditions. October-November is considered safer  A significant number of pilots are untrained or lack certification One step to a healthier you—join Times Health+ Yoga and feel the change

'Not entered any collaboration with Dolly Chaiwala': Starbucks India clarifies as ‘meme' goes viral — check full post

Starbucks India-Dolly Chaiwala: Dismissing viral social media posts, Starbucks India has clarified that it does not have any official brand ambassadors — and that there has been 'no collaboration' between the brand and Dolly Chaiwala. 'A meme, created independently by a third party, appears to have been misconstrued as a formal campaign,' Tata Starbucks said in its statement. Speculations of Dolly Chaiwala being appointed as Tata Starbucks brand ambassador were on the rise after multiple social media posts — portraying Dolly Chaiwala as the ambassador of the multinational chain of coffeehouses — were doing the rounds, with some of them even going viral. One of the social media posts about Dolly Chaiwala and Starbucks India Unless you were living under a rock, or were completely detached from social media, you might have come across a viral image of Dolly Chaiwala and his tea stall. Dolly Chaiwala is a tea vendor from Nagpur who gained global recognition – courtesy — his unique and theatrical chai-making style, which went viral on social media. The Nagpur tea seller got everyone talking about him after former Microsoft CEO Bill Gates stopped by for a cup of his famous chai during a visit to India last year. Refuting claims of Dolly Chaiwala being appointed as the Starbucks India brand ambassador, the multinational chain further wrote: "Specifically, we have not entered any collaboration with Dolly Chaiwala. A meme, created independently by a third party, appears to have been misconstrued as a formal campaign. TATA Starbucks is committed to communicating with accuracy and authenticity and we value the trust of our customers and communities." Tata Starbucks is a joint venture between Starbucks Coffee Company and Tata Consumer Products Limited (formerly Tata Global Beverages). Starbucks entered the Indian market in October 2012 through the joint venture with Tata Consumer Products. Its first store opened in Mumbai, and since then, the coffee chain has expanded rapidly, now operating over 400 outlets across the country.
