
NASA gives chilling update on the mysterious 'interstellar object' racing through our solar system - as Hubble Space Telescope provides fresh evidence on exactly how big it is
The visitor from another star, dubbed 3I/ATLAS, was first spotted on July 1 as it reached 420 million miles from the sun.
Now, the Hubble Space Telescope has captured the sharpest images ever taken of 3I/ATLAS as it makes its way into the inner solar system.
These groundbreaking images reveal that 3I/ATLAS is moving at a staggering speed of 130,000 miles per hour (209,000 km/h) – making it the fastest interstellar object ever detected.
Using Hubble's observations, astronomers have also been able to make a new estimate for the size of the object's icy core.
Previously, scientists at the Vera C. Rubin Observatory estimated that the alien comet was roughly seven miles (11.2 km) across.
We now know that 3I/ATLAS is at most 3.5 miles (5.6 km) wide and possibly as small as 1,000 feet (320 metres).
However, that would still make 3I/ATLAS the largest interstellar object ever found, and up to 14 times larger than the second–biggest.
Scientists and space agencies around the world are now almost certain that the object 3I/ATLAS is a comet rather than a solid piece of rock.
That means it is a relatively small lump of ice, frozen gases, and dust surrounded by a large cloud of evaporating material, which grows as it approaches the heat of the sun.
When objects are extremely far away, scientists estimate their size by how much light they reflect.
However, astronomers weren't initially sure whether 3I/ATLAS was a very large but dull space rock or a smaller and highly reflective comet surrounded by bright gases.
Now, thanks to Hubble's observations, we can see the tell–tale glow of a frozen comet and get a good estimate of its true size.
Hubble's image reveals a dust plume streaming out of the sun–warmed side of the comet and the hint of a tail stretching out behind.
This amount of dust loss matches what scientists find in other comets around 300 million miles from the sun.
As 3I/ATLAS gets closer to the sun and becomes even warmer, the tail and dust plumes should also grow more pronounced.
It will reach its closest point to the sun in late October at a distance of 130 million miles (210 million km), passing just inside the orbit of Mars.
Thankfully, the object poses no threat whatsoever to Earth and will be on the opposite side of the sun during this close encounter.
This is only the third time that scientists have managed to detect an object approaching from another star system, and astronomers are working hard to gather as much data as they can while it is still here.
Science team leader for the Hubble observations, Dr David Jewitt, of the University of California, says: 'No one knows where the comet came from. It's like glimpsing a rifle bullet for a thousandth of a second.
'You can't project that back with any accuracy to figure out where it started on its path.'
3I/ATLAS' extreme speed relative to the sun also confirms that it has likely been travelling through the cosmos for many billions of years.
As the comet passed planets, stars, and nebulae, the 'gravitational slingshot effect' added to its momentum.
The longer an object spends drifting through space, the faster it will become.
Previous studies have suggested that 3I/ATLAS is likely to be at least eight billion years old, making it the oldest comet ever seen.
That means the comet is potentially twice as old as our 4.6 billion–year–old solar system.
3I/ATLAS follows just two other interstellar objects, 1I/'Oumuamua, which was discovered in 2017, and 2I/Borisov in 2019.
However, researchers believe that recent advances in telescope technology mean we will soon start spotting more interstellar visitors.
Dr Jewitt says: 'This latest interstellar tourist is one of a previously undetected population of objects bursting onto the scene that will gradually emerge.
'This is now possible because we have powerful sky survey capabilities that we didn't have before. We've crossed a threshold.'
Hubble is just the first powerful space telescope lined up to observe 3I/ATLAS' journey through our stellar neighbourhood, with the James Webb Space Telescope, TESS (Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite), and the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory all scheduled to make observations.
3I/ATLAS should remain visible to ground–based telescopes through September, after which it will pass too close to the Sun to observe, and is expected to reappear on the other side of the Sun by early December.

A meteorite that tore through a Georgia home has revealed a stunning secret: it is older than the Earth itself. The space rock blazed across the sky in broad daylight on June 26, sparking hundreds of reports from witnesses across Georgia and South Carolina. The meteorite, now known as the 'McDonough Meteorite,' exploded with a loud boom, shaking the ground and capturing the attention of residents. Researchers at the University of Georgia examined 23 grams of a meteorite fragment that smashed through a Georgia man's home. It went through the roof, HAVC duct, and left a hole in the floor the size of a cherry tomato. Planetary geologist Scott Harris concluded the space rock formed 4.56 billion years ago, roughly 20 million years before Earth. 'It belongs to a group of asteroids in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter that we now think we can tie to a breakup of a much larger asteroid about 470 million years ago,' Harris said. 'Multiple fragments, which tore through a residential roof in Henry County, were turned over to a UGA planetary geologist and impact expert to determine.' Before breaking into fragments small enough to analyze, the meteor, known as a bolide, was recorded entering Earth's atmosphere at an incredible cosmic velocity. This massive space rock hurtled toward McDonough at speeds exceeding the speed of sound. 'When they encounter Earth, our atmosphere is very good at slowing them down,' Harris said. 'But you're talking about something that is double the size of a 50-caliber shell, going at least 2,236 miles per second. That's like running 10 football fields in one second.' Using optical and electron microscopy to examine the fragments, Harris identified the meteorite as a Low Metal (L) ordinary Chondrite. This classification indicates the meteorite likely formed 4.56 billion years ago in an oxygen-rich environment. 'Modern technology, in addition to an attentive public, is going to help us recover more and more meteorites.' Harris explained that although a fragment this small posed no danger, scientists study meteorite impacts to better understand their dynamics. The ultimate goal is to assess the risks and prepare for potential threats that could cause catastrophic damage,' he added. Panic broke out across parts of the US when the fireball was spotted falling from the sky. Police scanner audio in Spartanburg, South Carolina captured a call from a woman who reported a 'giant ball of fire' falling from the sky, a sight echoed by witnesses from Tennessee to Georgia. Several metro Atlanta city and county officials relayed reports of a 'fireball' sighting from the sky on June 26 'I'm not crazy! I just saw a huge ball of fire fall from the sky in East Tennessee around the Cherokee National Forest!' a firefighter wrote on X. 'Anyone else see it? Right around 12:20pm ET. Very cool but a little unnerving given the current times!' While some speculated it could have been a falling aircraft, the firefighter described it as 'like a mini sun falling with a tail of fire.' In Georgia, one resident said they not only saw the object, but heard it pass overhead and felt the ground shake when it hit. The National Weather Service confirmed the many reports across the Southeast US saying: 'It is not certain, but the satellite-based lightning detection shows a streak within cloud-free sky over the NC/VA border, over Gasbury, VA. 'This streak was detected between 12:51 to 12:56 pm.' Hundreds of reports of a possible fireball were submitted to the American Meteor Society website from Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee, which are still pending. A flaming object was seen streaking across the skies of several southern states, sparking panic and confusion, as no explosion or fire were reported on the ground 'This was the middle of the day, and it just came out of nowhere,' according to one fireball report on the American Meteor Society from Perry, Georgia. A report submitted by Ashley R from Suwanee, Georgia read: 'I thought it was a missile.' Brian S from Alpharetta, Georgia said: 'It was full daylight, no clouds, and still it was very bright. I heard a muffled and slight boom sound, maybe 30 seconds later, but that could be unrelated.' He added that he saw a 'smoke trail that quickly fell apart.' Marc Tozer of Georgia shared on Facebook: 'Stone mountain here and it made a booming sound, house shook with a long rumble. Dogs went crazy.' Another Georgia local posted: 'House totally rumbled, sounded like a log rolling off the roof, thought nukes were coming...' WRDW, an Atlanta news source, reported that black smoke was seen south of I-20, although it may be from a controlled burn, first responders said.

Most popular meteor shower of the YEAR peaks tomorrow with up to 150 fireballs shooting overhead every hour - here's the best time to catch the stunning celestial display
If you're a keen stargazer, be sure to keep your eyes on the sky tomorrow night. On Tuesday evening, the Perseid Meteor Shower will reach its dazzling peak - and you won't want to miss it. At the height of the yearly display, you'll be able to spot as many as 150 fireballs shooting overhead every hour. And with the Met Office currently forecasting clear skies over most of England and Wales, this could be one of the year's best opportunities to see some shooting stars. However, the remaining light from the recent full Sturgeon Moon might make it hard to spot some of the fainter meteors. But if you don't manage to spot any fireballs this Tuesday, there's no need to worry. Although they will be at their most stunning tomorrow night, you'll still be able to catch the Perseids until August 24. So, here's the best time to catch the spectacular celestial display. How to see the Perseid Meteor Shower If you want to get the best chance of seeing the Perseid Meteor Shower, the most important thing will be avoiding any unnecessary sources of light. Since it is summertime, that means you'll need to wait until at least 10:00 pm for the sky to be dark enough. Meteor showers tend to become more impressive towards midnight when the sky is darkest, so be prepared for a late night if you want the best view. Dr Edward Bloomer, senior astronomer at the Royal Observatory Greenwich, told Daily Mail: 'Try and get somewhere dark, and crucially let your eyes adjust to the dark. 'It's a physical process, so it will take a while. Basically, put your phone away, relax, and be a little patient.' Dr Bloomer recommends taking at least half an hour to allow your eyes to reach maximum sensitivity. Once your eyes have adapted to the dark, all you need to do is sit back and look at the sky. WHERE DO METEORS COME FROM? Meteors come from leftover comet particles and bits from broken asteroids. When comets come around the sun, they leave a dusty trail behind them. Every year, Earth passes through these debris trails, letting the bits collide with our atmosphere and disintegrate, creating fiery streaks in the sky. Source: NASA Although they can peak at 150 shooting stars per hour, the Perseids may come in fits and starts, so don't be put off if you go a few minutes without seeing anything. 'The meteor shower will appear to 'radiate' from the constellation Perseus, so that's your best bet,' says Dr Bloomer. You can find Perseus in the Northeast, near the constellation Cassiopeia, which you should be able to recognise by the bright 'W' or 'M' of stars. Dr Bloomer adds: 'If that part of the sky is obscured, don't worry; the shooting stars can appear in any part of the sky.' You can also try looking at other regions of the sky to catch the shooting stars in your peripheral vision, which tends to be a little more light sensitive. The good news for any budding astronomers is that you won't need any special equipment to see the Perseid Meteor Shower. Dr Shyam Balaji, of King's College London, told Daily Mail: 'It is one of the fastest and brightest meteor showers of the year, so an astronomical highlight for stargazers. 'For me personally, I think the best way to view the meteor shower is just with your naked eye because of the speed with which they move. 'But you could use Sky Guide or Stellarium, or other stargazing apps, to get a better viewing experience, to target the right regions of the sky to see the meteor shower.' To make things even better, the Met Office is currently forecasting good conditions for much of the UK. Tom Morgan, operational meteorologist at the Met Office, told Daily Mail: 'Tonight will see quite a lot of cloud over the country, but southern England may turn clearer during the early hours. 'Tomorrow night will generally see clearer skies than tonight with Wales, central England and northern England having the most prolonged clear periods during the evening but some clear periods likely in many parts of the UK at times and into the early hours of Wednesday morning. What is the Perseid Meteor Shower? Like all annual meteor showers, the Perseids are caused by the Earth sweeping through a cloud of orbiting dust. 'The Perseid meteor shower is caused by the Earth travelling through the debris left by a comet called Swift-Tuttle,' says Dr Balaji. Since this patch of dust is always in the same place within Earth's orbit, the Perseids always occur at the same time of year and appear from the same point in the sky. As the Earth moves through the debris cloud, tiny pieces of rock and dust hit the atmosphere at 37 miles (59 kilometres) per second. The intense heat produced by the friction of that impact burns up the meteors in seconds. The smallest pieces of rock vaporise to leave bright trails that we see as shooting stars, while the larger chunks explode into fireballs. Although we don't know exactly when the Perseids started, the first sightings date back nearly 2,000 years to early records from ancient China. WHY DO METEORS MAKE A SOUND? Meteors are fragments of space rock that enter the Earth's atmosphere and burn up as a result of the friction created when they pass through, appearing as bright streaks of light in the sky. As well as light, this friction also creates sound, with some meteors creating a 'sonic boom' as they break the sound barrier, in a similar way to a fast-moving aircraft. Since meteors can be over a hundred kilometres in altitude, and their sound waves travel much slower than the light they generate, the sonic boom is often not heard until many minutes after the flash is seen. The boom will also only be loud enough to hear from Earth if the meteor is particularly large, enters the stratosphere below an altitude of about 30 miles (50 km) and explodes as a bolide, or fireball. As well as the boom, some stargazers claim to have heard hissing and buzzing sounds at the same time as a meteor is seen. This is because meteors also give off very low frequency radio waves, which travel at the speed of light. These are inaudible, but can cause physical objects on the Earth's surface to vibrate and produce a sound, which our ears may interpret as hissing.

Weight loss jabs like Mounjaro and Wegovy could make you go BLIND, experts warn
Two of the world's most popular slimming injections may raise the risk of a sight-threatening eye disease in people with type 2 diabetes, researchers have warned. A team from Massachusetts analysed health records from more than 185,000 patients prescribed GLP-1 receptor agonist drugs—a class that includes semaglutide, the active ingredient in Wegovy, and tirzepatide, found in Mounjaro. These medications suppress appetite and are increasingly used by people with diabetes and obesity to shed pounds and control blood sugar levels. But the study found they were linked to a 'modestly increased risk' of diabetic retinopathy—a condition caused by damage to blood vessels in the retina, the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. Left untreated, it can lead to permanent sight loss. Even so, the researchers noted that fewer people in the study developed the most severe complications of diabetic retinopathy, such as blindness, even among those who already had the condition before starting the drugs. The analysis also found no statistically significant difference in the risk of NAION—non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy—a rare disorder that causes sudden vision loss in one eye when blood flow to the optic nerve is cut off. Based on their findings, the authors said people with type 2 diabetes taking the drugs should have regular eye checks to catch any problems early. The researchers behind the Massachusetts study disclosed conflicts of interest with companies that manufacture the drugs, including Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk. Separately, another US research team—whose findings were also published today—analysed data from 159,398 people and did find an increased risk of sudden sight loss linked to the injections. They looked specifically at patients with type 2 diabetes and no history of eye problems, comparing those prescribed semaglutide or tirzepatide with a matched control group. Their results showed an increased risk of NAION—non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy—and other optic nerve disorders in the medicated group, although they stressed the 'overall risk was low.' After two years of follow-up, 35 patients (0.04 per cent) in the semaglutide or tirzepatide group had developed NAION, compared to 19 patients (0.02 per cent) in the control group. In addition, 93 patients (0.12 per cent) in the medicated group developed other optic nerve disorders, versus 54 patients (0.07 per cent) in the control group. The researchers added: 'No association was found with other disorders of the optic nerve or visual pathways.' In this second study, the researchers didn't disclose any conflicts of interests with weight loss jab manufacturers. The weight-loss jabs have been found to help people lose up to 20 per cent of their body weight in just a few months. However, there have been numerous reports of side effects after getting the jabs from hair loss and constipation to extreme cases of bloating. Recently, US experts found that semaglutide—may 'waste away muscles', making it harder to lose weight. And earlier this summer, in June, slimming jabs like Mounjaro and Wegovy were linked to more than 100 deaths in Britain. A total of 111 deaths were logged with the regulator, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), up to and including May 29. But none of the fatalities, which have all been reported since the jabs were licensed for use in the UK, were proven to be caused directly by the drugs. However, the UK medicines regulator launched a probe into the safety of fat jabs after hundreds of Britons developed pancreatitis, specifically, leaving ten dead. Nevertheless, the weight loss jabs have remained popular, with pharmacists warning just last month that booming demand may become 'unsustainable'. The warning was issued by The National Pharmacy Association (NPA)—which represents over 6,000 community pharmacies. It came after their recent poll of over 2,000 people showed an increasing demand for private and NHS-backed weight loss services. The NDA poll revealed a fifth of participants had attempted to access weight loss treatments in the last year.
