Kodu 2025 art exhibition in Chennai: When a line becomes a means of self-inquiry, reflection
Curated by artist and educator Aishwarya Manivannan, the exhibition will showcase more than 150 original works across various media, including painting, sculpture, photography and animation, done by 25 emerging artists, aged 14 to 25.
Rooted in the Tamil word 'kodu,' meaning 'line,' the theme explores the act of drawing a line as a process of self-inquiry and reflection. The young artists have drawn inspiration from their personal experiences and cultural contexts, creating works that are both layered and evocative. It will explore memory and emotion using lines through the eyes of young artists, offering a unique opportunity to engage with art that reflects both personal and universal narratives.
Highlights of the event include a collaborative live drawing and music jam on June 22, featuring violinist Shravan Sridhar and other renowned visual artists.
The exhibition is committed to accessibility, welcoming children with learning disabilities, individuals with physical challenges and members of the deaf and blind community, underscoring the universal power of art. Admission is free and open to all.

‘Coolie' review: Rajinikanth survives Lokesh Kanagaraj's overloaded and tacky ‘Coolie'
Lokesh Kanagaraj's Coolie stars the ageless, tireless and boundless Rajinikanth as a former dock union leader with a messiah complex. Coolie, released in Tamil, Hindi and other languages, revolves around the conflict between Deva (Rajinikanth), the smuggler Simon (Nagarjuna) and Simon's savage enforcer Dayal (Soubin Shahir). Deva is minding his own business, being a killjoy at the chummery he runs by forcing the residents to abjure liquor. But Deva is no Gandhian, as is revealed when his friend Rajasekhar (Sathyaraj) is killed and Rajasekhar's daughter Preethi (Shruti Haasan) needs protection. Rajsekhar has invented a 'mobile cremator', an electric chair that instantly does the work, and is very useful to Dayal. Since he is apparently the only person on the planet who can operate the gewgaw, his death troubles Dayal a great deal. Deva calls Rajasekhar his best friend but Deva has somehow been kept out of this ash-strewn phase. After Rajasekhar's death, Deva returns to his brutal ways. Written by Kanagaraj and Chandra Anbhazhagan, the 168-minute film has an overdose of gory, nails-driven-into-flesh brand of violence to compensate for its cliche-ridden, contrived plot. Kanagaraj hopes that the brain that isn't yet jaded by visuals of gruesome torture won't start thinking about the holes in the plotting. For safety, Rajinikanth is surrounded by actors who represent each of the country's major film industries. Apart from Nagarjuna (Telugu) and Shahir (Malayalam), Bollywood's Aamir Khan plays Dahaa, a bulked-up gangster. Kannada star Upendra plays Kaleesha, Deva's old buddy. One of the film's themes is that people aren't who they claim to be. This barely works out for Deva, since Rajinikanth has played this kind of mystery man before, but it does for a couple hiding in plain sight. The twist concerning Dayal and the character played by Rachita Ram is the most novel idea in the film. Kanagaraj does badly by the female characters yet again, with Preethi constantly in danger of being raped and not too bright either. The attention is firmly on Rajinikanth, playing the same-old hero with flexible morals with unbridled enthusiasm. Rajinikanth's Coolie draws frenzy in Kerala's Ernakulam with 350 houseful shows across 30-plus screens
A collective roar of wolf-whistles went up in theatres across Ernakulam district in Kerala as the iconic title card of 'Superstar Rajinikanth' backed by peppy music composed by Deva for his 1992-blockbuster flick Annamalai flashed across the screens. The Tamil actor's much-anticipated movie Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj opened with multiple fan shows on Thursday (August 14, 2025) at 6 a.m. That the movie, 171th in his career, also marked the actor's golden jubilee in the tinsel town was another reason for Rajinikanth fans to celebrate. The excitement around the movie lived up to the hype even before its release, as advance bookings witnessed an unprecedented high. Starting from 6 a.m. up until midnight, nearly 350 shows across 32 theatres and multiplex screens in Ernakulam, all of them houseful, have been scheduled for the opening day. A multiplex in Kochi city packed in as many as 30 shows, followed closely by another with 27 shows. With an extended weekend beginning with Independence Day on Friday, tickets have become a prized possession. 'This will be one of the biggest openings for a movie. Screens have packed in shows without break till midnight. And the rush is not just confined to theatres and multiplexes in the city, but in the suburbs as well,' said K. Vijayakumar, president of Film Exhibitors United Organization of Kerala (FEUOK). With positive word-of-mouth following the initial shows, buzz around the movie is already strong. 'The swag Rajinikanth, who is well into his 70s, is still able to bring on screen is unbelievable,' said Manoj Kumar, before walking in to watch the fan show in a multiplex at Maradu. Coolie has an added draw for Kerala audiences, with Malayalam actor Soubin Shahir's dance in the song 'Monica...' going viral ahead of its release.
