File police report over false testimony at inquiry, Suhakam urged
PETALING JAYA : Suara Rakyat Malaysia (Suaram) has urged the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) to lodge a police report against Taiping prison officers accused of lying under oath during its ongoing inquiry into the Jan 17 assault at the facility.
Suaram executive director Azura Nasron said this is not the first time that the officers have misrepresented the facts.
Azura said that in March, several gave false denials, even in the face of incontrovertible evidence such as CCTV footage.
She said this pattern of dishonesty raises serious concerns about the integrity of future witness accounts and the investigation as a whole.
'If Suhakam fails to act now despite what appears to us as glaring evidence of false testimony, it risks setting a damaging precedent for future inquiries, and dents the independence, effectiveness and integrity of its human rights protection mandate as an A-status national human rights institution,' she said in a statement.
The public inquiry has seen at least one prison warden publicly rebuked by Suhakam for lying under oath, after CCTV footage proved his denials false.
Azura also dismissed claims that a police investigation would hinder Suhakam's work, saying a police report targets specific legal violations, while the public inquiry serves broader institutional reform.
She warned that delaying action would send the wrong signal about tolerance for false testimony and weaken public confidence in the inquiry's outcome.
Contacted by FMT, Suhakam chairman Hishamudin Yunus said he would refrain from commenting while the inquiry is ongoing.

UTM Palapes cadet's death: Johor police await autopsy findings before wrapping probe
JOHOR BAHRU, Aug 13 — Police are awaiting the chemistry department's report from Kota Tinggi Hospital on the autopsy findings in the death of a Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Reserve Officers' Training Unit (Palapes) cadet on July 28. Johor police chief Ab Rahaman Arsad said the report, which takes about a month to complete, will determine the 22-year-old cadet's cause of death before investigators can finalise their papers. The newly appointed state police chief explained that the delay was due to several samples still undergoing analysis at the chemistry department. 'Investigators will then refer the matter to the state prosecution department for advice on certain requirements during the course of the investigation. 'The prosecution department will also determine if there are grounds to charge or if further investigation is still required,' he told reporters at the Johor police contingent headquarters today. Ab Rahaman said Bukit Aman's top leadership had instructed that the case be investigated thoroughly, given the public attention it had drawn. He expects the probe to be completed within a month before the investigation papers are forwarded to Bukit Aman and the state prosecution department for further action. So far, police have taken statements from 22 witnesses, including the doctor who conducted the initial examination, the pathologist who carried out the autopsy, as well as the victim's family members, trainers and friends involved in the training activity. Syamsul Haris Shamsudin died on July 28 at Kota Tinggi Hospital after completing his reserve officer cadet training at the Army Combat Training Centre (Pulada) in Ulu Tiram, Johor. Earlier, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said an internal investigation by the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) found no evidence of abuse or mistreatment during the training session. He said all witnesses, including officers and instructors, confirmed no abusive behaviour or misconduct occurred throughout the training. Yesterday, Syamsul Haris' mother, Ummu Haiman Bee Daulatgun, called for a second investigation and for her son's grave to be exhumed to determine the exact cause of death. The 45-year-old single mother said the application had been submitted to the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) through the Higher Education Ministry to enable a transparent investigation.

RM4.15b federal allocation for 17 Kelantan projects, flood mitigation a priority, says MB
KOTA BHARU, Aug 13 — The federal government, through the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS), has approved a development allocation of RM4.15 billion for 17 projects in Kelantan, including for flood mitigation, said Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud. He said the implementation of flood mitigation projects (RTB) would protect the people and safeguard property, proof of the government's commitment to public safety. 'This RTB not only reflects the collective effort and cooperation of all parties but also demonstrates our ability to deliver quality work within the stipulated timeframe. 'Therefore, the Kelantan state government is deeply grateful and wishes to express appreciation to the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation and JPS, in particular, for the approved development allocation,' he said. Bukit Aman says now probing possible criminal element in death of Zara Qairina, including bullying
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 — The investigation into the death of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama (SMKA) Tun Datu Mustapha in Papar, Sabah, which was initially classified as sudden death, will now focus on possible criminal elements, including bullying. At a press conference here today, Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Datuk M. Kumar said this was among the findings of a special CID team comprising nine officers and personnel sent to Sabah on Aug 11 to probe the case. The Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) today announced its decision to conduct an inquest into Zara Qairina's death after reviewing the investigation report submitted by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM).
