Why do Masters winners and members get green jackets? The tradition, explained
Welcome to FTW Explains, a guide to catching up on and better understanding stuff going on in the world. Watching the Masters on Sunday and suddenly wondering why all the members and winners of the tournament at Augusta National wear those same green jackets and the origin story behind it? We've got you covered.
Editor's note: A version of this post was originally published 2022.
The green jacket might be one of the best non-trophy trophies in all of sports, right?
It's wearable bragging rights, one that you can put on for any event, from a day at Wimbledon (Sergio Garcia) to heading to a local Chick-fil-a (thanks, Patrick Reed).
But what's up with the whole green jackets thing? Let's help you out and dive in all things green jackets:
Why have Augusta National members wear green jackets at all?
There's an origin story here, via PGA.com:
The first story is Augusta National co-founder and one of golf's greatest champions, Bobby Jones, attended a dinner at 12-time Open Championship venue Royal Liverpool in England where club captains were wearing matching jackets to denote their position. Jones liked that.
The other story is that Augusta National co-founder Clifford Roberts figured it was a way to identify club members as 'reliable sources of information' to visiting non-members — and to let waiters know who got the check at dinner.
In 1937, that's when the green jackets started rolling in.
Why are the jackets green at Augusta?
Specifically, the color is Pantone 342 per Golfweek. The story I found behind this came from Today's Golfer:
So when Augusta National opened in January 1933, [Bobby] Jones floated the idea to business partner Clifford Roberts. The only issue was the colour. Red, yellow and even 'Georgia peach' were all considered but quickly dismissed. Then, while out walking Roberts' eye was taken by the leaves underpinning the many azalea bushes found on the former Fruitland Nursery site. Known as verdant green, the choice was made and a legend was born.
When did the Masters winners start getting green jackets?
Back in 1949, Sam Snead got one when he won his first Masters at Augusta.
How do the golfers get jackets in their exact sizes?
They get a temporary one that's approximately their size before they're given a customized fitting after their win.
Do you get more than one green jacket if you win multiple Masters?
Nope! Back in 2019, when Tiger Woods won, we learned this one. You can bring the green jacket home for a year after your win, but then it has to be brought back and worn only at Augusta.
And if you win again, you get your same jacket to put on after your victory.

2025 Wimbledon odds: Is Jannik Sinner or Carlos Alcaraz favored?

One of the greatest matches in the history of men's tennis took place on Sunday at Roland Garros. World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz took down World No. 1 Jannik Sinner in an epic five-set marathon, winning 4-6, 6-7, 6-4, 7-6, 7-6. And just like that, it's time to look ahead to the third Grand Slam of the year: Wimbledon. Let's look at the early odds for the world's most prestigious tennis tournament, as of June 8. Wimbledon men 2025 Carlos Alcaraz: +150 (bet $10 to win $25 total)Jannik Sinner: +160 (bet $10 to win $26 total)Novak Djokovic: +500 (bet $10 to win $60 total)Jack Draper: +1000 (bet $10 to win $110 total)Alexander Zverev: +1800 (bet $10 to win $190 total)Daniil Medvedev: +2500 (bet $10 to win $260 total)Taylor Fritz: +3000 (bet $10 to win $310 total)Matteo Berrettini: +3000 (bet $10 to win $310 total)Lorenzo Musetti: +3000 (bet $10 to win $310 total) Alex De Minaur: +3000 (bet $10 to win $310 total) As a tennis fan, surely it is hard to breathe after that one. Coming into the match, Sinner had only lost once on the year — to Alcaraz in the final at Rome. Sinner had also won the last two Grand Slams: the 2024 US Open and the 2025 Australian Open. Alcaraz, however, won Roland Garros in 2024 and was looking to defend his title, all while cementing his status as the best clay court player in the world now that Rafael Nadal has entered retirement. Alcaraz did just that, fighting off a two-set deficit and three match points in the fourth set before winning the title via a fifth-set tiebreak. Unreal. Alcaraz is now 5-0 in Grand Slam finals. Sinner drops to 3-1. As for Wimbledon, Alcaraz is the defending champion there and opens as the slightest favorite over Sinner. Alcaraz has won the last two titles at the All England Club, defeating Novak Djokovic in both of those finals. Wimbledon will take place June 30 through July 13 in London, England. Jonquel Jones has avoided a serious injury after going down with a right ankle issue in the team's previous contest and has not been ruled out for their home game on Tuesday against the Sky. The Liberty will see if Jones can return to limited activity on Monday. Jones was injured in the first quarter of Thursday night's 86-78 victory in Washington. She rolled her right ankle on a play under the basket and received attention from trainers on the floor before being helped off the court. The Liberty (8-0) have a few options at center behind Jones. Nyara Sabally, the team's primary backup big, has missed the past six games due to a right knee injury, but head coach Sandy Brondello said Sabally could return for Tuesday's game against the Chicago Sky. Isabelle Harrison, the veteran forward who joined the team this winter as a free agent, has provided useful minutes off the bench. Arizona Cardinals have 6 key contributors returning from season-ending injuries

Arizona Cardinals have 6 key contributors returning from season-ending injuries The Cardinals made a bunch of offseason moves but also have a few key players returning from season-ending injuries. The Arizona Cardinals have been busy in the offseason acquiring players to help them improve in 2025. They were active in free agency. They added seven players in the 2025 NFL draft. All should help the team be better now and in the future. But they also have a few players coming back from season-ending injuries who should also make an impact in the upcoming season. Who are the notable players coming back from injuries? LT Paris Johnson Johnson suffered a knee injury that caused him to miss the final three games of the year. He is already back and good to go, though. RT Jonah Williams Williams played in only six games last season, injuring his knee twice. He got on-field work in OTAs, so he should be ready to jump back into the starting lineup. When he was in the lineup, he played well. DL Justin Jones Jones was the Cardinals' biggest free agent acquisition in 2024 but played in only three games before tearing his triceps and missing the rest of the season. Now he returns as part of what has suddenly become a loaded defensive line room. DL Bilal Nichols Nichols was signed last offseason like Jones but only played in six games before a neck injury ended his season. With him and Jones coming back and the additions of Calais Campbell and Dalvin Tomlinson, the Cardinals' two best D-linemen last year — Dante Stills and L.J. Collier — are now like No. 7 and No. 8 on the depth chart. OLB BJ Ojulari Ojulari was expected to be their top pass rusher last year but tore his ACL in training camp and never played a down. He returns to a retooled room. The Cardinals signed Josh Sweat and re-signed Baron Browning, whom they acquired in a midseason trade. Zaven Collins remains and they drafted Jordan Burch in the third round this year. The hope was that Ojulari would be a double-digit sack player. If he can do that while getting upgraded play from Josh Sweat, Arizona's defense could be really good. RB Emari Demercado Demercado suffered a back injury and missed the final four games of the season. He has been the team's third-down back for two seasons and figures to return in that role.
