
Mountain marvel: how one of biggest batteries in Europe uses thousands of gallons of water to stop blackouts
S econds after a catastrophic series of power outages struck across the UK in the summer of 2019, a phone rang in the control room of the Dinorwig hydropower plant in north Wales. It was Britain's energy system operator requesting an immediate deluge of electricity to help prevent a wide-scale blackout crippling Britain's power grids.
The response was swift, and in the end just under one million people were left without power for less than 45 minutes. While trains were stuck on lines for hours and hospitals had to revert to backup generators, that phone call prevented Britain's worst blackout in a decade from being far more severe.
Almost six years later, the owners of Dinorwig, and its sister plant at Ffestiniog on the boundary of Eryri national park, formerly Snowdonia, are preparing to pump up to £1bn into a 10-year refurbishment of the hydropower plants that have quietly helped to keep the lights on for decades.
Ffestiniog was one of the first pumped hydroelectric systems in the UK when it opened in 1963, while nearby Dinorwig – the largest and fastest-acting pumped storage station in Europe – followed in 1984. The refurbishment could mean the plants continue to provide reliable clean energy on demand for decades to come – and serve as giant grid batteries to store Britain's renewable electricity for when it is needed most.
Miya Paolucci, the UK boss of the French energy company Engie, one of Dinorwig's owners, said refurbishing the plant will cost a third of the investment needed to build a new hydropower plant on a similar scale, making the overhaul an 'intuitive' decision to secure another 25 years of life from the 'much-loved' power station.

Britain has used gravity and the flow of water to generate electricity since 1878, when a hydroelectric generator first powered an arc lamp at the Cragside manor house in Northumberland. The project involved dropping water 100 metres vertically to turn a Siemens generator that would go on to power a series of newly invented incandescent lightbulbs in the country house.
Dinorwig and Ffestiniog use the same principles as the Cragside manor house to generate enough electricity to power the equivalent of almost 2 million UK households in a matter of seconds. When power is plentiful, the plants use electricity to pump water from a lower reservoir up to an elevated dam. Later, when power supplies are tight, the water is released to drive the turbines, generating power.
Dinorwig or Mynydd Gwefru, as it is known locally, can be called upon to generate electricity within 75 seconds by releasing 86,000 gallons of water a second down a cavernous 500-metre vertical tunnel. The water crashes into six turbines, each weighing about 500 tonnes, which generate high-volume blasts of renewable power on demand.

Overall, hydropower makes up only 2% of the UK's total electricity – but often at times when its electrons are at their most vital to keeping the lights on. It provides many of the key benefits of large fossil fuel power plants – but without the carbon emissions.
Unlike wind and solar farms, hydropower projects can be called upon by the system operator at specific times when the grid needs more generation to meet demand. The spinning mass of its generators can also help to stabilise the frequency of the power grid at about 50Hz, the level required to avoid power outages. In the event of a blackout, hydropower can even help to restart the power system.

But after 140 years generating electricity it is hydropower's potential as an energy storage technology that is key to its future. Pumped hydropower can effectively work as a long-duration battery by using renewable electricity when it is abundant to pump water up into a reservoir and release the water to generate electricity when renewable energy wanes.
Unlike grid batteries, which are often designed to charge during the day and discharge electricity at night, long-duration energy storage systems can store energy for hours, days or even weeks so it can be used when needed.
The government hopes to bring forward investment in 18GW of storage by 2035, of which 10GW should be long-duration storage such as hydropower. But pumped hydropower projects are struggling to find a place in Britain's energy landscape

There are geographic hurdles: there are only so many vast mountains and brimming reservoirs, and the projects can also provoke concerns within the local community. But in locations where they are viable developers have been left to wait for government officials to confirm the details of its financial support framework.
One of the UK's biggest renewable energy developers, SSE, hopes that its Coire Glas project in the Scottish Highlands could be the first major pumped storage hydro scheme built in the UK in more than 40 years.
The project could power 3 million homes for up to 24 hours, and would nearly double Great Britain's total current electricity storage capacity, but it needs the final details of a government support scheme before SSE can fully commit to the project.

A House of Lords report published late last year warned that a large-scale rollout of long-duration energy storage technologies was 'not being treated with sufficient urgency'.
The report found that a wide-scale rollout would allow more renewable power to be available, potentially lowering the overall cost of electricity for consumers.
Better energy storage could, the committee said, make the grid more flexible and avoid paying to switch off wind and solar farms when there is more clean power being generated than consumers can use.
Paolucci said: 'Flexible storage is essential for net zero carbon operation of Britain's electricity system. It helps balance the system by ensuring there's always a large volume of 'back-up' power on standby, that can be delivered in very fast timescales if required. We're very proud to contribute to the electricity security of supply and green energy ambition of the UK with these extraordinary assets.'

Spirit makers face a sobering cocktail of challenges — from tariffs to teetotalers
Global spirit makers are staring down a sobering cocktail of challenges as tariffs and brand boycotts threaten to exacerbate wider shifts in drinking habits. French cognac maker Rémy Cointreau on Wednesday became the latest spirits maker, following Diageo and Pernod Ricard, to withdraw its sales targets on increased economic and trade uncertainty. "Given the continued lack of macroeconomic visibility, the geopolitical uncertainties surrounding U.S.-China tariff policies, and the absence to date of a recovery in the U.S. market ... the conditions required to maintain [Remy Cointreau's] 2029-2030 targets are no longer in place," it said in a statement. The move came as full-year sales at the group's cognac business, which includes its namesake Remy Martin brand, fell 22% on an organic basis on slowing U.S. consumption and "complex market conditions" in China. The popular brandy variety, which hails from the French region of Cognac, has been particularly caught in the crosshairs of ongoing U.S.-Sino tensions. LVMH similarly saw a 17% drop in its Hennessy cognac in the first quarter. But the specialty drink is far from alone as trade barriers weaken already drying demand for spirits. LVMH's wine and spirits remains the French luxury group's worst performing division, while Diageo spirits including Tanqueray, Gordon's and Smirnoff saw the steepest declines in the first quarter as sales of Irish stout Guinness rallied ahead. "Distilled spirits in the U.S. are going through a correction, and U.S. tariffs add another layer of uncertainty," Jefferies said in a note last month. The prestige — and often legal requirements — associated with spirits and wines mean that they are heavily dependent on local production and thus heavily exposed to U.S. import levies. Champagne must be produced and bottled within the Champagne region, for instance. "With spirits and wines you have terroir caches, and that means you're producing locally and exporting. Hence it's much more vulnerable to geopolitical tensions," Sanjeet Aujla, analyst at UBS, told CNBC via video call. Remy Cointreau estimated that tariffs as they currently stand could serve a 65-million-euro blow ($55 million) to its business after mitigating measures. Diageo, meanwhile, said about 25% of its business is set to be impacted by duties. The same does not apply for beer, which relies on local production and has been flagged as an unlikely winner from brewing trade divisions. Notably, the world's largest brewer AB InBev, as well as Dutch and Danish beermakers Heineken and Carlsberg all maintained their full-year guidance in the first quarter. As a result, wines and spirits are potentially more exposed to brand boycotts too, with consumers more likely to swap out a particular product on political grounds in favor of a locally-made alternative. The tariff hit comes as the industry has slowed over recent years following a strong decade of growth, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic. Locked-down consumers forked out more on alcohol in 2020 and 2021, fueling a simultaneous surge in premium brands. "During the pandemic, not only did people drink more, they premiumized more," Aujla said. Spirits are often seen as an affordable luxury, especially in good economic times. But they nevertheless tend to be an occasional purchase, with many Covid-era stockpiles remaining in liquor cabinets across the world. As economic conditions turn, however, consumers may be less inclined to cough up $100 for a good bottle, instead downtrading or opting for lower-cost ready-to-drink (RTD) alternatives. "Spirits-based RTDs are weighing on distilled spirits growth alongside the impact of cumulative inflation," the Jefferies note said, adding that downtrading was most visible in vodka and rum products, while demand for premium whisky, tequila and gin remained more robust. "That [premiumization] is on pause today, given the cyclical headwinds we have in the industry," Aujla added. The drying demand comes as health and wellness trends spark a shift in consumer habits, with more people becoming "sober curious" and experimenting with lower alcohol consumption. Indeed, many drinks makers have sought to embrace that shift with new ranges of low and no alcohol products. Meanwhile, the proliferation of weight loss drugs — and early evidence of their role in suppressing alcohol cravings — pose another potential challenge for the industry. Nevertheless, analysts remain divided over the severity and permanence of the downturn. "There is considerable debate over the extent to which currently anemic demand is cyclical or structural," James Edwardes Jones, analyst at RBC Capital Markets, said in emailed comments. Cyclical pressures refer to economic headwinds and hangover supplies from the Covid-era, while structural shifts refer to changing consumer patterns. "It's a bit of both, and more cyclical than structural," Aujla said. "But when the cyclical headwinds dissipate, we think US Spirits industry growth will be 1-2% lower than the 4-5% historical growth."

L'Oreal sees Middle East and Southeast Asia as next growth engines as China slows: ‘Eventually demographics have to win'
For more than a decade, China's aspirational shoppers, spurred by a fast-growing economy and rising wages, snapped up products from cosmetics giants like L'Oreal, Estee Lauder, and Shiseido. Before the COVID pandemic hit, China appeared set to overtake the U.S. as the world's largest makeup market. Those boom times are over, as more Chinese consumers now turn to up-and-coming local brands, like Mao Geping and Florasis. L'Oreal's sales in Mainland China dropped last year, shrinking its overall North Asia sales by around 3%. The Chinese market, the bulk of the firm's North Asia revenue, now accounts for 17% of group sales, down from 23% in 2022. The French firm continues to call China an important market, but has reportedly started cutting its retail workforce due to slower Chinese demand. As China stagnates, L'Oreal is now looking to regions, like the Middle East and Southeast Asia, as a source of growth. SAPMENA—L'Oreal's term for 'South Asia Pacific, Middle East, and North Africa'—will soon 'play a much bigger role' when it comes to beauty, says Vismay Sharma, who oversees the region for the French cosmetics firm. L'Oreal, No. 91 on Fortune's Europe 500, reported sales of 1.1 billion euros ($1.19 billion) for the first quarter of 2025, up 12.2% year-on-year, across SAPMENA and Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). That's still small compared to other regions, sitting far behind Europe, North America and North Asia. But while SAPMENA-SSA only contributed 9.2% of L'Oreal's quarterly revenue, it was the only region to log double-digit growth. SAPMENA covers a huge swathe of the globe, stretching from Morocco all the way down to New Zealand just under 19,000 kilometers away. The region's 35 markets cover 3 billion people, or about 40% of the world's population, yet only accounts for 10% of global beauty sales. 'It has to come together, and eventually demographics have to win,' Sharma says. SAPMENA's quick growth doesn't surprise Sharma. 'The consumers in this part of the world are about 5 years younger than the rest of the world, live in aspirational societies and in economies that are growing fast,' he says. China has proved to be a tricky market for global cosmetics firms post-pandemic. Sluggish China sales have dragged down the financial results of U.S. firm Estee Lauder and Japan's Shiseido. A sluggish economy and stagnant consumption are partly to blame. But there's also new competition. 'C-Beauty' brands are starting to pick up steam among Chinese shoppers, with new brands going viral on Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok, and other social media platforms. (L'Oreal is paying attention, investing in local Chinese brands like To Summer) Still, Sharma thinks China offers lessons for SAPMENA. Southeast Asia, like China, has highly connected consumers who are used to e-commerce and livestreaming. For example, Sharma notes that over 50% of L'Oreal's business in Vietnam comes from e-commerce. This is less true of the Middle East and North Africa. 'When you look at the ecosystem of beauty over there, you still don't have TikTok Shop. They're still a few years behind platforms like Shopee, like Lazada,' he says. Yet consumers in the Middle East share similar preferences to those in Southeast Asia. 'Expectations for beauty are very similar. We can see aspirations in terms of kind of hair, skin, lips, and eyes,' Sharma says, pointing to a preference for longer black hair as an example. That gives L'Oreal a chance to grow in the region. EQT could acquire majority stake in landfill RNG company Waga Energy

Private equity investor EQT is in talks to acquire a majority stake in French RNG project developer Waga Energy with the intention of eventually taking the company private, the partners announced on Friday. EQT says it plans to acquire 54.1% of Waga Energy's outstanding shares at a price of 21.55 euros per share. It also plans to acquire 65.9% of the company's voting rights, per a news release. The deal is subject to regulatory approvals and is expected to be completed in the second half of the year. Waga Energy's board of directors has approved moving forward with a the proposed transaction. It has hired an independent expert to examine the offer, Waga said in the release. EQT says the deal will also accelerate Waga's growth and cement its position as a global renewable natural gas provider. The firm says its financial backing would help Waga better compete in larger markets while also addressing its core market of small and medium-sized landfills sites. EQT says its 15-year track record of investing in energy transition infrastructure makes it the right fit to lead the deal. Its portfolio includes waste-to-energy companies Arcwood Environmental, Encyclis Reworld. The firm also acquired a majority stake in Heritage Environmental Services in 2023 and a majority stake in waste and recycling software company AMCS in 2024. Waga uses its proprietary Wagabox RNG technology to purify landfill gas into RNG, which the company says is ideal for small and medium landfills because it can process landfill gas with up to 30% air content. The majority of European landfills where Waga has developed its technology fall into this category, the company said. Waga has shifted its focus to North America in recent years and has a growing U.S. market share. The company has so far signed 13 projects in the U.S, it said. Some of these signed deals are with Casella, while other completed projects are partnerships with Veolia, Suez and GFL Environmental. About 79% of the units it has under construction are based in the U.S., and four of its latest contracts are also based in the U.S., it reported in March. Waga currently has a total of 50 RNG production units in operation or under construction across Europe and North America. Its commercial pipeline is about 16.8 terawatt hours per year as of April 2025, up 40% year over year. Waga went public in October 2021, and since then, its revenues have grown by about 66% on average per year, the company said. The company reported 2024 revenue of 55.7 million euros and a net loss of 17.6 million euros. According to the proposed deal, if all legislative and regulatory conditions are met, EQT plans to take the company private by requesting a squeeze-out of remaining shares and then delisting the company. EQT also noted that the initial share price of 21.55 euros could increase through an earn-out amount of up to 2.15 euros per share based on the aggregate amount of U.S. federal investment tax credits that Waga could monetize related to projects it developed in the country. Other major public RNG and landfill gas companies have undergone notable sales in the last few years. In 2022, BP completed the $4.1 billion acquisition of Archaea, positioning BP as a major RNG developer for U.S. landfills.
